Miss Mabel Cheek read an essay on “Curiosity.” Tlie paper was interest ing and educational. A very humorous dialogue was rendered by Misses Louise Caston and Sarah Carter, “Off to Col lege.” It was very interesting. A piano solo was rendered by Miss Margaret Rowland. She has a wonder-^ ful talent for music and the society al ways enjoys her work. A short story was given by Miss Chiyo Ito, “A Lone St.ar.” The story was interesting and Miss Ito held the attention of her audi ence. An enjoyable number was given by iliss Mamie Sockwell, being a collec tion of interesting current and local events. Her number was very spicv and her choice of items was very good, ELON AND DAVIDSON OPEN STATE FOOTBALL SEASON ON SATURDAY WITH FIRST COLLEGIATE GAME (Continued fron Page One) paisEj J3A9 noX saVQNnS SVQOS snopipp jsom sq, puB sonaa «! isaq sqi noA. 9AJSS oi Xpcaj puB uieSb iqSTEHS aiE 3m wg UMOa 3PIS dn 9/M S3X quality We handle only such goods as have demonstrated their worth. He has been suffer ing considerably from bumps and bruis es but has gamely stuck to liis post. The backfield is a great problem, but the greatest seemingly is the position of qunrterback. Captain McAdams and Kirkland have been worked some at this important position and it will be hard to tell which will get the call in Saturday’s game. The end candidates are fair, but the loss of Flynn is still keenly felt. Alf Brown, Bob Brown, Elder and Hiatt liave been playing these important po sitions with only mediocre success. One tackle will likely be taken care of by Smith, who is playing his fourth year on the team. He is having some difficulty in getting down to jjlaying w’eight, but still looks best of any out for this position. Whitesell, who play ed guard last year, lias been shifted to tackle and is doing fair work although he has not as yet become thoroughly familiar with the position. However, it is expected that he will start in this position. Isley, Thomas, Alston, Barker. Sansone and Cardwell have all been playing guard. If Isley isn’t used ,in backfield he will in all likelihood be | sure to start in the guard position. Who will start other guard positions is a question. A. Braxton will doubtless get the call at center, as he proved to be one of the best in the state last year. Barker, if not used at guard, will at least act as Braxton’s understudy. It is a foregone conclusion that Captain McAdams and Kirkland will at least start in the backfield. As to who will be therr running mates is a question. Harrell is being groomed to do the punting, and in case he can fill this im portant position he w’ill likely get the staj’t. Although at present he is suf fering with a bruised leg, it is not ex pected to interfere with his playing against Davidson. Sides, Paul Braxton and Hainer are working hard and it is quite likely that all of these men will get a chance in the coming contest. This is how Coach Corboy feels in regard to this opening game: ‘‘The abil ity of the team as a whole is as yet an unknown quantity, although the ability and quality of the individuals is for the most part known. Just what they will do under fire I cannot say. But T feel confident that the men in wlioin I put my f;;ith to carry the colors of their College in this our initial football game, wall uphold their own as w-ell as their College’s honor, and fight to the Burlington, N.
