FONVILLE Manager Real Estate Psiphelians Discuss Work From Many Angles—Misses Gotten, Stryker and Morrow Mentioned. The Psiphelian Society program Mon day night consisted of various sketches from Robert Louis Stevenson. His work was discussed from all angles. The first number was the Life of Stevenson, by Miss Marie Nobles. She related many interesting facts in con nection with his life and works. A mystery story, Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, told by Miss Mary Hall Stryker, held the interest and attention of every member of society from the beginning to the end. Miss Essie Gotten, in Humorous Se lections from Stevenson’s Works, pre sented a well chosen and varied collec tion of incidents taken from Steven' son’s books. A reading, “The Sick Child,” by Miss Nannie Aldridge, was given with much expression and was interpreted ell. “What Critics Have to Say of Ste venson” was Miss Eunice Morrow’s subject. Miss Morrow thoroughly con vinced her hearers that Stevenson is a man to be appreciated and studied,— a man who ranks high in the minds of the critics. Miss Nettie Harris gave very effec tively the synopsis of an article writ ten by Stevenson’s step-son and taken from Scribner’s Magazine. Miss Kate Strader played in an easy and pleasing manner a beautiful piano solo, “White Violet.” Miss Eunice; Phillips’ synopsis of 01- lala was intensely interesting. Miss Beulah Hammer pointed out various reasons why we should read Stevenson’s works. Her paper was a splendidly written one. Special mention was made of Misses Gotten, Stryker and Morrow’s work. The College Store. “It’s no wonder you’re such a sissy,” declared the bad boy. “Your pa and ma were married by a justice of the peace.” “Well,” retorted independent Mary, “from the noise I hear com ing from your house, your pa and ma must have been married by the Secretary of War.” on Whom it is founded, and forward to its future work. The one great hope of the world today is in the church, in Christian education. But something is wrong with the present church,” the sueaker declared. “It has failed to live up to its ideals.” Then taking the words of St. Augustine, “A whole Ghrist for my salvation, a whole Bible for my creed, a whole church for my fellowship, and a whole world for my parish,” Mr. Eldredge proceeded to set forth some of the things that are seri ously affecting the church today, and some of the things that will help to upbuild it. The cleavage among the people, which is so greatly hindering the work of the church, is not so much between the different denominations and sects, but within the denomina tions themselves. People take only a part of Ghrist, only a part of the Bible, only a part of the church, and only a part of the world, for their realm of study. Christ has been misrepresented and misunderstood. People must know that Christ dwelleth not afar, but in and among them. The fact that the church takes only a part of the whole is especially true with regard to the Bible in its teachings concerning the origin of man. People are not ready to take the whole of the Bible. “The great truth to be remembered,” Mr. Eldredge said, “is that man was cre ated by God, and his is a kindred spirit of God’s.” This last statement led to the points that the speaker seemed to stress most, —preparing and fitting oneself for ser vice, to fit into the world. Everyone is called by God to do His service; and if one is to fit into his place in life he must be wholly prepared and ready to serve when the moment comes. Mr. Eldredge closed his talk with the story of a youth whose time of ser vice lasted only 20 minutes, but who, in those 20 minutes, because he was ready and fit for the service, was able to save 27 lives.
