Around this hal lowed structure clustered the happy college exper iences of more than a generation of Elon’s sons and daughters. This building is in ashes but the character it moulded will live on forever. (Editorial in the 1924 Phipsicli, The College Annual) The fire of January 18, 192.3, has made necessary and at the same possible a new Elon. The same spirit that has throughout her history made Elon the syno nym of what is best in Christian idealism is henceforth to have a more becoming plant in which to incarnate itself. The present Senior Class is the first to graduate after having used a part of the new plant. It will always be a source of lasting satisfaction to utiv'e thif signal honor—for it is an honor to begin great movements and to endure hardshji^s in a good p-rme With bowed hernJa aiaa*;sat in rooms without doors. It has been necessary to watch every step to keep out of the way o) nails and de'bris. Visitors may have thought we were regretful to have to put up with these in conveniences. On the other hand we gladly did it with no word of complaint because we cherished the day when the new Elon plant would be a reality. As one speaker who attended our chapel said, we will twenty-five years from now count our momentary sacrifices as among the chief goods of our College course. This new plant will mean an investment of at least a half million dollars in the following buildings and their equipment: 1. Alamance Building—for Re citation and Administration. 2. Whitley Building—for Aud itorium ,and Music Department. 3. Carlton Building—for Lib rary and Research Offices for Professors. 4. Mooney Building—for Chris tian Education, the Social and Religious Center of the campus. 5. Duke Building—a thorough ly modern Laboratory Building. In addition, plans have been made to beautify the campus with lawn, shrubs, concrete walks, driveways, and a fence of brick with entrances worthy of our Alma Mater.
