Bar rett, Carroll Clark, Hale Duncan, and Albert Weston are now Philologiaiis. The program for last Thursday eve ning was well rendered, and, needless to say, it W'as of interest. P. Gr- Hook gave a summary of the events in the Elon-GuilfoTd football game. He was followed by Cox, McNeill, and Veazey who spoke on Development of Roads. Favorite Authors, and the Value of Humor, respectively. Resolved. “That Negroes should be given the same political and educa tional advantage as the ’Whites." was the querv for discussion, and the de baters vied in a determined effort to win. Ray Moses and David Shepherd were of the affirmative; Guy Veazey, C. P. Thompson, and James Fowler pre sented the negative. After some deliberation the judges declared the af- firmati%''e had won. with David Shepherd and C. P. Thompson as best on their respective sides. J. Paul McNeill was voted the best orator of the evening. The new men have the old Phi Spirit and are showing up well. Clio’s Percy Hudson opened the Clio pro- grajn with a short history of the Y. M. C- A. and offered some worthy sugges tions as to how it may be improved here at Elon. If Mr. Hudson will de velop his latent ability as a speaker, he w'ill no doubt make go'od in the field of oratory. He has a wonderful mode ot expression. The judges voted him best on the entire program. Clifton Thomas told in an interesting way the advantages and disadvantages of a col lege career. For a few minutes the stern solemnity of the society was for gotten and everyone burst into laughter at Nash Parker’s timely jokes. David Brown Harrell gave some interesting facts about the southern novelists. There is a general impression that the great novelists come from the north, but Mr. Harrell showed that many out standing writers of no'vels are bora and live in the southern states. The debate, “Resolved, That literary society meetings should be limited to two hours,” was a somewdiat heated af fair. Mr. Eure and Mr. Barney up holding the affirmative won the judges' decision over Mr. Alexander and Mr. Davis. Our critical critic—he is hard to' please—reported that the program was very good. Last Friday the Nevele Club con- at Mrs. L. D. Martin’s home for one of the largest and most mterestnig meetings held this season. Mesdames Ton) Chandler and Howard Gunii were specially invited guests. Miss Louise Savage gave a splendid talk on current literature and recent publications. Mrs. 0. W. Johnsoii rendered some very original witticisms. Miss Smiley had charge of the enter tainment. Mrs. Martin and Mrs. Jay served a most delicious salad course. The next meeting will be with Mrs. Francis J- Eing in \Vest Dormitory. Last Friday Mrs. Harper. Miss Sav age and Miss Fisher attended a music club social in Raleigh. Last Saturday Mrs. Harper and Mrs. Jay went to Sanford to help plan for the Music Confederation Convention. This convention will meet in Sanford next April.
