February 27, 1931. MAROON AND GOLD Page Three. DEACONS WIN (Continued from Page 1) out with an injury with the game yet six minutes to go. The Elon attack was weakened by his loss and the visitors increased their lead. The visitors played one of the best games seen on the Elon floor this season. Their passing was fast and accurate, and Joy ner, Barnes and Owens all had uncanny eyes for the basket. Barnes led in the scoring with a total of 15 points. He bad an advantage, however, of only one point over Joyner, his running mate. The Christians played an exceptionally good game after the first minutes of play. They showed improved ability to locate the goal. Jackson led in the scoring with a total of 13 points. The Christians have two more games to complete their schedule. They play lienoir-Khyne here Thursday night and Guilford at Guilford on Friday night. The Summary; Elon (33) G. F. TP. BAD BOY OF SPORT It is easy to understand why college football is chosen as the bad boy of spon, the one held up as the shining example of what intercollegiate athletics have come to in this country. Football makes money at the gate; it offers 11 boys on a small field playing a game for the benefit of thousands looking on, millions reading and countless numbers listening in; the players have their names and pictures in the papers the year around; the coach makes as much, in some instances, as the president of the school; and, last but not least more people are interested in foot ball than in any one college sport—there fore something must be the matter with it. I have no intention of denying anything written above. The only thing I want to know is what’s wrong with it? Listen, why not be fair with football? It is one game so vigorous that it does not lend itself very well to intra-mural class, fra ternity and dormitory play. If football can not be played under expert super vision and with up to date equipment it should not be allowed, for the sport is dangerous to life and limb if not hnndlel by strict supervisors. In spite of thi«, you will find many class and dormitory football teams at most schools and you will find far more boys actually playing the game than the critics would have you think by constant mention of the 11 men on the field.
