M. I. will probably have a much tougher team to battle to day than they have anticipated. With fifteen letter-men back who served w’ith last year’s champion ship team, the prospects of an other championship team are of the best. Coach Hendrickson stated; “In view' of the fact of a ne^v regime, the spirit is wonder- fdil and the boys are taking to the new system as w’ell as is to be ex pected. The squad and the coach ing staff are working hard for each game as it comes on the schedule, and their hopes are cen tered on retaining the fine record Elon College has had in the past.” There is some speculation as whether the team w'ill ‘click’ u;i- der the new coaching system, bu‘ from the attitude shown on the practice field and on the camp.i.s they are making fast headwa'’ toward what, from tjie looks of the squad, is a good understand ing between the coach and the men. The team will be under the gen eralship of Captain Joe Caruso, at quarter-back position, who is Jjeginnina' his fourth year as a member of the Elon team. Other seniors who will probably be at strategic points on the team are; Abbitt, Beaver, Bradley, Maitro, and Day. There has alio been some valti- ajjle ma-terial added to the squad Hendrickson, Duke alumnus and lieud i.oach of the Elon Christians. ail-Stuthern quaiter-back, this iill begins h;s first season as A native of Liina, Ohio, he came CO Duke ill from i,ieparai, oiy .■c.'iools 111 Dtaver I'alis, Pa., and *^^.Sai. ne outstanding pei- i.uxm.,nces lii il;e lie .limen squads, c. peciaiiy m iuoi,uaU, aud upon .....iiiiig me var^j.ty in liJol con- -iiiued tiie briiiiani. record siari,- eu tiie year uei^rq!. ne played .^r iniee yeais on tae vais.ty' -cam, making uoch the ail-South- I and -iii-uiAie ie.^iua, and w.is ^ liequent ii„iiunce i^r Aii- • iiiieii.aii honors. ills perform- aiKe.-> 111 basKet-ball a* ^^uard arid -n oaaeoaii at iliuu L»a-t; were al- .iKst on a par vviin uu sieilar ^^ciijirnances on the gnfliron. lii ...o last year on ihe Udice team ue was Liie key ma.i oj. tne tooc- ball team which suffered but one defeat, that being at the hands of Georgia-Tech. 'After making a name as one of the gieatest athletes of Duke Uni versity, upon his graduation in 1933 he took over the backfield coaching position of the Duke freshmen squad under Herschel Caldwell. Since then th*t fresh men team has met with unusually good success.' Wallace Wade, Duke head coach, gives the highest praise to this quiet, efficient, and courteous man of the Elon Christians. Wade once stated that Hendrickson was one of the greatest athletes he ever coached, a man who has a natural inclination for work, and .one who will undoubtedly go fa.' •as a coach. The Elon coach is only twenty- *seven and is at the threshold of •ahat promises to be long and !successful coaching career at' Elon College. ' ' In his position as head of the : coaching staff, he has Thomas W. Power, another Duke graduate an.l an all-Southern guard, to assist in football, to coach boxing and wrestling, and to supervise intra mural athletics. Power is origi- ' nally of Rosemont,' Pa. After ' i;iep school he entered Duke in the fall of 1933. Besides an out standing guard on the gridiron, he also excelled at wrestling and track. Sinje coach Hendrickson has I taken I'harge there have bee»i some long needed repairs and ini- ! piovements made in the basement of the gymnasium. The visito'^a’ :o;oom has been remodeled, the dres.sing room and stock room. ! leconditioned, the training quar ters for boxing and wrestling re walled, the showers have been en larged, and the whole basement tle;ined and painted. An extensive intramural pro gram has been planned' for the year, and will start in the near future. It is felt that Coach Hendrick son is giving of his best to Eivn, and the alumni, administration, and student-body seem to be wholeheartedly behind him. Hello again! Once more this column will “ramble” through the sports fields and .see what is be ing done by those fellows wear ing Elon sweat-ahirts and jei'seys. But say, you are to get a break this year. This column is going to be done by different hands Watt.s will be held in reserve. Three men will share the tackle berths; .lim Day, Ben Hurst, and ,Jim Hauselt. The guards will be A1 Mastro and “Jaybird” Fritts. Johnnie Beaver will also see plenty of action because of his blocking ability. Archie Israel, from time to time, just to break I after a summer of hard woi'k fil- up the monotony. Variety is the I ling the ice boxes in Waterbury, spice of life they say, so why not | will be expected to play GO rain- start off here? I utes of football. Archie is in condition to do this, moreover. This fact was proven last Satur_ day when Archie was in on almost ! every tackle made. Captain Caruso Having a new coaching staff means a great deal of work o-n the part of the players as well as the | co'aches themselves. The foot-! bailers have to learn new systems! James Abbitt will be the key and signals, and the coaches have ‘ man in the backfield attack, doing to study the players to determine! mo.st of the running and practical- just how they fit into plans.. ly all the kicking. Little need be This year’s squad has a good first j said about his punting, but hij team with plenty of speed, powei-, ^ ‘ mining has improved a great deal and experience, and, provided Ibis' year. This ability was showa there aie no injurie.s, we should have a successful season. The line is composed entirely of let ter-men from last year, and the backfield contains three letter- men. Which makes it almost a veteran outfit. The end positions will be hel l down by ‘ Hunk” Bradley and Ar' Lea, who made the first touch down against Duke in the recent scrimrauge game at Durham. Hull against Duke when he ran back h kick for sixty yard.s through the entire Blue Devil team. Captain •loe Caruso and Amos Shelton will be the blocking backs, with Am ;.s doing most of the passing also. The other running position is stiU wide open. Vince Kazlow, Joe Golombek, and Charlie Pitmin will have to fight it out, which will make it all the more inte.est- ing. SUPPORT YOUR TEAM ciiis year for the first time, and with the more seasoned veterans I'orming the vanguard the recruits should form, a valuable pai’t of the squad. It is evii«nt that the squad has a splendid spirit and i.s wj.kii;,, ttard for the ,^hool. The admini.s- iration und student b>dy are al! cooperating with the .squad and are behind them in every way pos- .sible.
