SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1, 1938 MAROON AND GOLD PAGE THREE Rambling' With Frank T)onovain Extensive Program For Girls’ Athletics Things a lot of us would like: A modern athletic stadium for Elon teams. A stadium suitable for high class football and base ball, which will hold thousands of persons. There is a need for it. North Carolina is gradually be coming more sport conscious every year. And the class of athletics displayed at Elon is definitely on the up grade. They both work to gether. The nearby cities of Bur lington and Greensboro are large enoughlo support our teams. Big name colleges could be booked and crowds are sure to follow. I The whole thing could be worked, out through the W. P. A. j To be up in Philadelphia today to see our boys go to work against La Salle. For the first time this year the full first string will be able to play. Lee Fones and Char lie Pitman, erstwhile injux’ed members, are ready to swing back into action. They will join Shel ton and Golombek to round out a smooth clicking backfield. Saeck- er, Causey, and Brannon will, be a little more polished; and they should team up well with Cap tain Archie Israel, “Jay Bird” Fritts, Ben Hurst, and Art Lea, to complete a formidable line. Parker, Donato, Milbury, Palan- tonio, Kazlow, and several others are bound to see some of the fire works also. Mrs. Hendrickson, director of women’s athletics, (play teacher) has arranged an extensive pro gram for the semester. Ping Pong, Shuffleboard, and Volleyball are the three sports now under way. Basketball practice will begin in about a week with the different classes competing. The third class will fight it out with the winner of the meet, between the first and second class, to determine the championship. Badminton, a new game to the students of Elon, will be introduced shortly. The new Gym suits and the new equipment for the various games have come and all the girls are asked to come and take advantage of them. Competition is expected to be much keener this year, due to the fact that the enrollment is so much larger than that of previous years. However, each girl will have an equal opportunity to show her ability in her particular field. It is hoped that the winner of these series of games will have the op portunity to compete with some nearby girls’ college. This in it self should prove a great incentive for the betterment of intramural sports. FOOTBALL SCHEDULE FOR 1938 Intramurals To be with Roland Longest next weekend up in the Yankee Stadium seeing a couple of the World Series games. Have a good time “Gourdhead”, and think of us down here alongside the radio. The intramural program is really getting underway. There is quite a bit of talk about it going on already, and the season _f:hould be a corker. j The Great Jezeboo, Or What Is It? Jezeboo. It’s not another dance craze or a new shop, folks. It's just an old ‘‘T Model ’ Ford, one that has gained quite a lot of popularity in its old age. We know you’ve seen it coming up on the campus, chugging butj never choking, and with its flashy war paint on, ready to challenge any new streamliner to! prove its stamina. It’s as up to date as any with, its speed of 45 miles per hour, and the brakes are perfect except for the reverse brake and that is a braintwister. When you stop on the reverse it looks as if there is mutiny among the wheels. The front and back ones want to go different ways. The accessories are nice too. There’s a horn which works from the footboard and a seating ar rangement with the roll-call on the floor. When there is a full house, “Jezebee” looks swell (the sides bulging out). It’s bound to, though, with the little misses Vir ginia Fowler, Celeste Bryant, Nell Tingen and Kathryn Evans, to adorn it. We envy you, Paul Pittman, but we like “Jezeboo”. . . • And the ladies on the roll call. Coach Power has announced his intentions of having a touch foot ball again this season, providing the dormitories and day students enter teams. He stated in chapel last week that all the fraternities had entered teams. There seems to be a lack of in terest among the students gener ally except the fraternities. With trophies being offered for the win ners, and the chance to get out and keep in shape it seems that more enthusiasm would be mani fested. The directions of intra murals is under the capable of Coach Power, and he is very much interested in seeing a good intra mural program here, but all he can do is to offer his services. The students have to show at least a mild interest if intramurals are to be a success at Elon. If your dormitory hasn’t entered a team call all of the fellows together, and go into action. The time to begin play has already passed. ELON MOVIES Well, students, we are in for a swell treat this weekend. Errol Flynn, the co-ed's dream, will ap pear in “The Adventures of Rob in Hood,” tonight, in Whitley Au ditorium. This picture is acclaim ed as one of the outstanding films of the year, bringing the famous legendary character and his mer ry men ■'to romantic and convin cing life. To add to an exciting story and an excellent cast, the film is entirely in techni-color, em phasizing the gorgeous costum.es and beautiful scenery of “Sher wood Forest.” On October 7 and 8, "Of Hu man Hearts ’ has been booked. The student body has spoken — and they- elected Gallo way Walker, Lib Armfield, David “Shorty” Corey, and Mary Bivins. At the Elon-High Point foot ball game, we were impressed with the talent that these cheer leaders displayed. Now that we hav’e chosen our cheer leaders, let’s all give them our wholeheart ed support, and back our inter collegiate teams with power and cooperation. Elon opened its 1938 North State Conference here today by de feating High Point by 40 to 0. The Panthers fought hard, but were outclassed by the heavier and more experienced proteges of Coach Hendrickson. Big Joe Golombek paced the Christians to victory by scoring four of the touchdowns. One of the scores was on a thirty-five yard run after an intercepted pass. Another was a thirty-one yard gain off tackle. Elon’s freshmen, who played most of the game, showed us that we have plenty of new talent.
