The CTD Slant
Library Receives Youth Steps Out
By A-S RALPH PATTON
This being the second appearance
of this department, we think it about
tirae that we blossomed forth with a
statement of policy and purpose—so
that not only you readers, but also
the column itself may have a reason
ably clear idea of what goes on here.
The prime purpose of this column
is to keep you of the civilian side of
the campus informed of the latest
of the week (as Fred Allen would
have it) insofar as the CTD is con
cerned. plus such explanations of CTD
customs and practices 8s may be
needed to make the news mean any
thing to you. and as space will per
mit, And if, by some chance, there
shouldn’t be any news, anything can
happen.
This week, though, there’s almost
more news than we can handle. Lead
event of the week is tl\e announcc-
msnt of the selection of student of
ficers for the coming montii. which
of particular interest this time be
cause the appointment of two new
members of the Group Staff, Group
Major (or First Captain) and Group
Supply Captain, as well as the ap
pointment of new Squadron Com-
mind?rs, is involved. The Flight
Lieutenant and non-commissioned of
fice apopintments haven't been en
tirely completed as yet, but we have
been able to obtain the nev; roster of
Student Commissioned Officers and
First Sergeants, except for the Flight
Lieutenants, which id as follows (those
starred are new appointments to the
position':

The number of books in our library

Most of them are still going through
the process of cataloging and, as yet.
are not ready for public use.
Many of the booke were given to
the school from the library of a
prominent Elon man, Dr. J. O. At
kinson. now deceased. Again Dr. H
K. Eversull, of Cincinnati, Ohio, re
membered ouv library with a super
gift of about 200 books. Both these
collections contain splendid litera
ture for college students.
Quite a number of new books from
the best seller list are now available
at the Ibrary desk, including the fol
lowing; ‘’The Arm and the Darkness.”

Toil and Trouble," Feucht-Wanger;

Congrats to the new Frosh officers.
We sincerely hope they enjoy serving
for the class of "47 ’ and make the
old school proud of them. However,
we might warn them It is traditional
to see a guy with short hair after they
have taken office.
Have you noticed the smallest
couple on the campus this year? It
is none other than Weinie Wentz and
Tenie Henley. They remind us of
how "Bonnie” Davis and "Pee Wee
Huntley looked last year.
Have you read the latest poem out?
It is "Me Mudder,” and as the ex
pression goes, It ain't nothing but
hot! If you doubt us just ask Sen
ior Gibbs.
May the best man win in the duel
or Maxine Jackson. We hope that
Bob Lee and Shannon Morgan don’t
come to blows over this charming
brunette
How goes it with you John Sut
ton? We think your pipe is very be
coming to you
A rare sight is to see Joyce Matth
ews and Dwight Kernodle under a
street light reading song sheets
Our heart is at a standstill these
days. Ever since that beautiful Sun

"Atten-shun!" rings the cry from
Club House every afternoon, Monday
through Thursday, at 2:30. and Fri
day at 7.15 a. m. A strict, formal in
spection of dormitory takes place,
every man standing at "parade rest.”
But the army doesn't use the Club
House, does it? No, but the Elon
men do, and tlirough this military or
ganization, the appearance of the
boys' rooms, as well as the grounds,
is in a strictly "G. I.” condition.
Under the guidance of Colonel J.
D. Messick, the men have regiment
ed with the following officers: Major
"Bob" Lee, Captain Rodney Souther
land. 1st Lieutenant Bacil Steed, 2nd
Lieutenant George Davis, Master
Sergeant James Hipps, Drill Sergeant
Vickery, and a very capable group of
corporals and technicians.
Daily the rooms are inspected by
I he appointed officer of the day, al-
lliough Colonel Messifck may make
a suiprise inspection at any time. If
a boy reecive live demerits within
three month.s, he will be "busted"
one rank
Most of the Club House soldiers
think this is an exceptionally gooQ
program, and that so far it has been
effective in every way.
RATION BOOKS
Nos, 1. 2, and 3 must be turned in
to the Business Office Immediately
by order of Ration Board, If you
have only turned in I or 2 of the

For those students who failed to j such a person around a campus to
receive their physical exaniinations I views on life that manv of
in the Nation's capital, Washington,
with the statements that "Where the
Best Wins the Test They Satisfy. ’
These advertisements point out that
Chesterfield is America's busiest cig
arette—on the job evei-y minute giv
ing smokers what they want.
As this campaign concludes in De
cember, the last advertisement fea
tures a happy Santa Claus bringing
joy to the world with the cheerful red
Chesterfield Christmas carton which
has come to be the symbol of holiday
cheer with smokers everywhere—a
Christmas gift which in the woi'ds of
the advertisement is "As Dependable
as Santa Clans” and which never fails
to Satisfy,
Copywise, Chesterfield again
stresses the importance of "the right
combination of the world’s best cig
arette tobaccos" in making a blend
that gives smokers the milder, cool
er, better taste they like. — (Adv )
