Elon has a better team than that
■of Carolina! That’s our opinion,
after seeing Carolina get swamped by
the Burlington Bees the other day
out at the ball park. George Meena
says that’s a lot of bunk, but never
theless, were Carolina and Elon to
meet, we’d take one of his bets, and
feel safe in doing so. Don’t feel
badly about those losses down at Ca
tawba, the lights weren’t smy too
good, and the boys had a little trou
ble followfing the ball.
Bill Anderson turned in 22 in
nings of scoreless pitching before Ca
tawba got on him last week. Not a
fast ball pitcher. Bill gets by with a
tricky knuckler and uses his head.
Next issue, which is the last of the
current year, the likeable manager
of the Christian, George Stanton, will
have the batting averages f the club
ready.. At present Steve Walker
leads the hitters up around the .400
imark. Graham Erlacher has two
lor three for .667 so far, but as yet
hasn’t seen enough action to qualify.
Don’t give up on this baseball club
of ours because of a few losses, how
ever, for the boys have enough on the
ball to come back with plenty of wins.
Our excuses are offered for men
tioning softball again, but we want
to tell anyone who’d like to go on
this year’s tour to get his name in
now. Last year the team hit Vir
ginia, Maryland, Jersey, New York
and Connecticut, but this year the
trip will be longer and include sev
eral games in Ohio, a stop at Win
chester, Virginia, and a quartet of
games in Massachusetts secured by
Ed Griffin who left us at Christmas.
The McCrary grame at Elon,
which was rained out, will be
played May 5th. The Eagles are
toug-h and include W. Hobson,
who played last year with Leaks-
ville of the Carolina League, hit
ting .350.

Dqilble Loss
To Catawba
Disaster strtick at the North State j
Conference hopes of the Fighting
Christians of Moa last week-end
when the Indians from Catawba grab- j
bed two arc-light games at Salisbury
by scores of 7-3 and 3-1. Although I
Jack Andrews and Bill Anderson
turned- in creditable mound jobs, a
series of errors and brilliant pitching
by Greene and Taylor of Catawba
proved the Elonites undoing. Tay
lor whiffed 19 in a spellbinding ex
hibition while Greene aided his cause
by clouting a home run. The double
«iefeat pushed the Christians down
to sixth place in the North State
Gonference.

Over Knitters
Bill Anderson turned in one of the
finest pitching performances of his
career at Winston-Salem on the 15th
of April when he stopped the classy
Hanes Knitters outfit with just four
hits for a 5-0 victory. Dick York,
Lou Savini and Ed Ellis led the at
tack with two safe hits apiece. For
Anderson it marked up 18 innings of
scoreless pitching for Elon this year.
With Steve Walker banging out
three safe blows, including a triple,
and with Frank Roberts and Weldon
Price spacing nine Panther hits, the
Elon baseballers grabbed their second
conference win Tuesday from High
Point by an 8-1 score. The game
was never in doubt as the Christian
stickers blasted for three runs in the
first inning and three more in the
second.

Depending mainly on a crop of in
experienced, blit promising; racquet-
eers, who are rounding into sjiape
under the guidiBg hand of Coach
Pierce, the Elon College tennis team
will open its 1947 season here this
afternoon against Greensboro Ten
nis Association. * Only two letter-
men, A1 Burlingame and Lawrence
Paige, have returned from last year’s
Cliristian squad, which finished sec
ond to Catawba in the N0rth State
conference.
Until last week, poor weather, had
prevented the Elon courts from toeing
put in playable condition, with the
result that Coach Pierce has had only
a few days in which to spot his best
prospects from among the 15 inen
who have reporte.d , for the sport.
Consequently, he will retain a team
of about 12 players until the weaker
ones are eliminated in intra-squad
competition.
In addition to the two lettermen,
players who may see action in today's
opienirig meet include Bill Winstead,
Bob Woolridge, Bill Ethridge, Frank
McCauley, Pedro Godwin, J. B. Mar
tin and Dave McClfehhy. Others niay
round 'into 'shape during the 'season
and replace men currently ratW high
er on the squad.
Two meets have been added to '
the schedule announced in the last
issue of MAROON AND GOLD. Elon
will play Oak Ridge away dn Wed
nesday, April 30, and at home on Fri- i
32 3 ' 4 day, May 16.
