Faces 24 Games
Come March 24, our Fighting
Christians wil show practically the
same club that closed the 1947 season
when they iplay host to the University
of Akron at the Elon College ball
.park.
No less than ten experienced vet
erans, including four twirlers are
back this year, and, along with pitch
ing, the main difficulty centers a-
round the bactstop position and the
keystone sack.
Coach Jmi Mallory plans to carry
aproximately 20 men, including three
catchers, two spare infielders and two
spare outfielders. Battling for the
catching chores are Chub Brown,
riank DeSimone, Bill Gregory and
George Shakelford, while the pitching
btatf shows veterans Jack Andrews,
Frank Roberts, Bill Anderson and
Bill Davis back along with newcomers
jack Graham, Ervin Planthold, Art
Fowler, Mike Kozakawich and Harvey
Smith.
Thurso MSsSwain is back at the
inititil sack but may have some
trouble from the slugging J. P.
Thompson. Lester Foster appears to
have solved the second base problems
and of course the smooth fielding
gems of the ball club, third baseman
Ed Ellis and short stop Steve Walker
..ill take care of the left side of the
infield. Bill Matze and Jack Hanel
ire fighting it out for utility work.
In the outer gardens, Lou Savini,
’.ocky Sileo and Dick York compose
a veteran outfield, but hard hitting
Gtraham Erlacher, who saw limited
service last season, "Ace” Womble
and Virgil Money are showing up
.veil in practice.
Coach Mlallory has scheduled 24
games including a couple of exhibitio**
tilts with the Burlington Bees, ana
Johnny Clayton will assist the new
mentor, who is also directing football
spring training at the present.
