I iKhtine Christians claimed four places
on the .\II-Conference honor squad and
placed one man on the All-State squad
as coaches and sports-writers pas.sed out
ihe individual laurels to the 1954 stars.
Homer Hobgood. (rishi), who held
down the important center post and an
chored the Christian forward wall, was
one of four Elon stars placed on the
.\ll-Conference outfit, and then he was
named one of the two top centers in
North Carolina and given a place on the
■All-.State combination that included
players from both the "B g Five" and
North State schools.
Hobgood, who is a junior fr-jm Oxford,'
averaged better than fifty-five minutes
of play in each of Klon's nine games this
season and proved to be a tower of
strength on both offense and defense. He
was a deadly tackier and also accounted
for two pass interceptions and recovered
two enemy fumbles during the season.
Named to the .^ll-North State Confer
ence squad along with Hobgood were
Kerry Richards (upper left), sophomore
halfback from Mahoney City, I’a.; ISoh
Stauffenberg- (center left), freshman full
back from Morea. Pa.: and Glenn Varney
(lower left), sophomore guard from
Powell, Pa.
Richards and Stauffenberg stood out
on offense in the Christian backfield all
season, with Richards leading the scor
ing and Stauffenberg pacing the rushing
for the Marom and Gold squad. Varney
saw heavy duty at guard throughout the
season and was particularly effective on
defense, where he recovered three fum
bles and intercepted two enemy passes.
Stauffenberg was the only freshman
listed on the 22-man squad.
