Chicago. He is to assume duties
as a member of the Elon College
Board of Trustees at the same
time. He will receive a Doctor of
Divinity.

who also resides at Suffolk, Va.,
is pastor of the Bethlehem Con-
cre^a'.ional Christian Church near
that city and hs long ranked as

v,as honored in 1952 as Virginia's
•Rural Minister of the Year" and

in the Woodmen of the World. He

Rev. James F. McKinley, a na
tive of Mi5£0uri, is now dean ot
the College of Theology of Silli-
man University in Dumaguete
City, Philippine Isalnds, where he
has beon connected since before
World War II. He has also tra
velled extcn:.ivcly in the Far East.
He was educated at Drury Col
lege, Yale Divinity School and Un
ion Theological Seminary. He is
to receive a Doctor of Divinity.
Dr. William T. Scott, since 194G
superintendent of the Southern
Convention ot Congregational
Christian Churches, is a native
cf Ramseur and was educated at
Elon College, Yale Divinity School,
Columbia University and Union
Theological Seminary. He has held
pastorates in a number of states
before assuming his present post

As Faculty Gives Dinner

The faculty of Elon College hon
ored Dr. Leon E. Smith, who re
tires as Elon's president tAis year,
at a formal dinner held Saturday
night, May 4th, in the banquet
room of the McEwen Memorial
Dining Hall.
The huge banquet hall wai
beautifully decorated for the oc
casion, with elevated head table
featuring a center piece of pink,
blue and white flowers and two
5-branch silver candelabras. Oth
er tables were draped with green
ery and silver bows and had 3-
branch candelabras. In the back
ground were floor baskets of white
glads and two 14-branch silver
candelabras. Centered in the hall
was a live fountain, with ferns
and tropical birds.
The program, honoring Dr.
Smith for his 26 years ot service,'
featured brief talks by faculty;
members, who in most instances
kept their comments in a light
vein. They paid tribute to Dr.
Smith for his untiring efforts in
building financial support for the
college, for his work in enlarg
ing enrollment, for his unfailing
support of sports, music and other
extra-curricular activities, for the
close relationship between the col
lege and church and tor the close j
cooperation between the adminis
tration and the faculty and stu
dents. I

Dr. Ned F. Brannock, now re
tired after many years of service
as a member of the Elon College
chemistry department faculty,
was honored last Thursday night
when the Chemistry Club present
ed the college with a portrait of
Dr. Brannock to be hung in the
halls of the chemistry department.

Be Honored
At Reception
The Senior Class ot 1957 will be
honored guests on Friday evening
ot this week, when President and
.Mrs. Leon E. Smith will join with
the Alumni Association in spon-
oring the annual commencement
reception at 8;30 o’clock in Alum
ni Memorial Gymnasium.
Since it will mark President
Smith's final appearance as host
at the reception, the invitation has
been extended to all the under
graduate students as well as the
seniors, and he and Mrs. Smith
have expressed the hope that ev
ery student may attend.
Invitations have also been mail
ed to the reunion classes, and
through the Alumni News and the
daily press all alumni have been
urged to return to the campus
for the reception. Also invited are
all faculty members and members
of the board of trustees.
Dave Brown and his Orchestra,
from Raleigh, will furnish the mu
sic tor the occasion, and the tra-

the office of Miss Hazel Walker,
college registrar, but the list is
subject to change as a result of
final examinations this week, and
it cannot be regarded as final.

diplomas next Monday is the lar
gest in several years, and the
number in the Class of 1957 will
be sweUed still larger by a large
group which is due to graduate

The graduation exercises, set for
10:30 o’clock Monday morning,.,
will climax a commencement pro
gram which is to get underway
with the annual reception and
dance for the seniors in Alumni
.\Iemorial Gymnasium at 8:30
o’clock Friday evening. At that
time President and Mrs. Leon E.
Smith will join with the alumni
in honoring the graduating sen
iors, who will be formally induct
ed as alumni at that time.
Members of twelve of Elon’s
graduating classes will hold re
unions on Saturday of this week
when the annual Alumni Day pro
gram is planned. Classes which
are to gather back on the campus
at that time are those which grad
uated in 1897, 1902, 1907, 1912,
1917, 1922, 1927, 1932, 1937, 1942,
1947 and 1952.
The Alumni Day program for
Saturday wi.ll open with breakfast
gatherings for the reunion classes,
which will provide an opportunity
for renewal ot old friendship: and
set the stage for the day. There
will be a picnic luncheon on the
South Campus at 12:30 o’clock,
followed by the annual business
meeting of the alumni association
that afternoon.
Climaxing the Alumni Day pro
gram will be the annual Alumni
Banquet, which will be served in
the second-floor banquet room of
the McEwen Memorial Dining Hall
at 6 o’clock. At that time Dr. A.
Lucius Lincoln, of DeBary, Fla.,
now a guest professor at Stetson
University, who Is a member of
Elon’s "Golden Anniv#rsary” Class
of 1907 will deliver th« annual

Whitley Auditorium at 8:30 o’clock
that night.
In addition to the graduation

nual spring meeting of the Elon
