Track Squad Tops Quakers In Dual Meet The Elon track squad chalked its fourth straight victory at Guilford ollege on Tuesday, May 10th, as Ihe Christians took eleven * firsts in fifteen events to down the Quakers 75 1-2 to 54 1-2. The Christian cindermen set new Elon records in both the mile relay and the two mile,in gaining the victory. The Elon mile relay quartet, composed of Grady Tuck, Ken Cooke, John Moore and Allen [lineman, won by thirty yards as he group set a new Elon mark of ' minutes 33 seconds, breaking the )!d mark of 3 minutes 33.5 second hat was set by Lynn Newcomu "erry Richards, Bobby Green an 'forst Mevius against Wake Foi- est in 1955. Tucker, 30-year-old lonroe native, is the new head ootball coach at Elon 0)llege, His appointment to the post, in which he succeeds Coach Sid Vamey, was announced this morning by Or. J. E. Danieley, president of EHcm. Tucker come* *o t’l" ^Vin coach Ing post from East Carolina Col lege, where he has been defensive line and end coach during the 1959-60 term, working under Coach Jack Boone. He also coached the strong East Carolina golf team this spring. Coach Tucker has also had coaching experience at Lancaster igh School in South Carolina, was head coach at Wingate Junior Col lege for the 1956 and 1957 seaosns land was assistant coach at David son during the 1958 grid campaign While at Wiogate he started football anew at the Baptist school after a 15-year lay-off from the grid sport, guiding the Wingate eleven to a 9-1 record in his sec ond year and a Number Two na tional ranking among, the nation’ junior college teams, at the same time placing two of Wingate’s boys on the Junior college All-American team. He was also head swimming caach and posted a 7-3 mark, also serving as freshman track coach with a 6-1 record. degree in 1958 from East Carolina, was named to Who's Who In Amer ican 0>Ueges in 1954. He was a regular guard and tackle at East Carelina for four years, winning All-Conference honors as a sopho more and gaining honorable men tion for Little All-American. He played guard in service football at San Diego. In announcing Tucker's appoint ment to the Elon position. Presi dent Danieley stated that the se lection was made by a committee which Included himself, along with Dr. H. H Cunningham, dean of the college: Prof. A. L. Hook, chairman of the faculty commit tee on athletics; and Prof. John D. Sanford, chairman of Elon’s de partment of health and physical education. Tucker will also be an ■assistant professor of physical education. President Danieley also an nounced that this committee is re ceiving applications for tbe posi tion of assistant coach and ex pects to complete the Elon grid staK within a short time. The traditional “home seventh,” however, brought the real Christa ian onslought as eleven Maroon and Gold batters walked to the plate and seven of them scored. Three Quaker pitchers shared the seventh inning and issued five bases on balls, which went with a single by Bruce Olson, a double by Gary Henson and a triple by Joe DelGaia to plate the BUon markers. A homer by Maidon fea tured a four-run Elon assault in the eighth. Mike Little had four singles in five trips to pace the Elon batting, with Olson, Maidon and Wall each contributing two hits.
