The Christians swept all places in the two sprints to feature the run ning events. SHOT PUT: Ferrell (E), Minick (Continued on pago 4) Paul Amundsen (left) and Sam Moon (right) are two letterman pitchers from last year who have seen heavy mound duty for Coach Jerry Drake’s Elon College Christians in the early-season baseball games. With twelve games played, both Amundsen and Moon have seen mound duty in five games, with most of Amundsen’s service in relief roles. Sam Moon, a soph omore from Snow Camp, has been mostly a starting pitcher and has been a tough luck hurler as he got credit for five losses, but many of the runs against the lanky chunker have come as a result of errors by his mates. Amundsen, also a sophomore who hails from Silver Springs, Md., has worked in five games in relief and has allowed only six runs in fourteen innings, with not a single earned run against him. I Elon Baseball Elon Records Are Broken As Cindermen Top A.C.C. Apps Winner By 5-2 Count The Appalachian Mountaineers struck early in the game and pushed over three runs in the second inning to clinch a 5 to 2 Carolinas Confer ence win over the Elon Christians at Boone Saturday afternoon. April 8th. The Apps used a pair of singles and two Elon errors to plate the three runners in the second inning, and then added two more markers in the fourth on a single and triple by Skip Eanes. The Elon nine got its first marker in the sixth on a walk, a stolen base and a pair of singles by Joe Byrtus and Richard Smith, and the second Elon tally came in the eighth on Marshall Montgomery’s solo home run. Joe Byrtus led the Elon attack with three singles in four trips, whi e Montgomery also had a single in addition to his solo homer. HR—Montgomery (E), The Elon College track squad turned back the Atlantic cindermen 86 to 59 in a Carolina Conference meet on the Elon track on April 12th, with the Christians winning ten first places and setting two new Elon records. The two new marks were by David Oliphant, with 40 feet 6 1-2 inches in the hop-step-jump, and by Dickie Walters, with 44.3 seconds in the 330 yard hurdles. (New Elon Record) HIGH JUMP: Anderson (E), (Continued on page 4) Wins Thriller By 6-5 Count The Elon College baseballers came from behind twice in late innings to grab a thrilling 6 to 5 victory over the Campbell College nine in 11 innings here on April 4th, with the Christians scoring a singleton run in the ninth to tie the count and then pushing over two counters in the eleventh to win the game after allow ing Campbell a score in the top of that final frame. With Campbell holding a 4 to 3 edge in the ninth, the Christians knotted the count as Dempsey Her ring singled with one away, advanced to second on a fielder’s choice and raced home on Jimmy Freisinger’s single to left field. Herring had three hits and Taylor Duggins a pair of safeties to pace the Elon batting, while Bob Gwynn banged four hits and Ed Fisher a pair of bingles to lead the visiting Camels. The line score: R. Elon Toppled By Delaware Inability to hit behind the runners proved fatal for the Elon Christians as they dropped a 3 to 2 decision to the University of Delaware nine on the Elon field on Monday, April 3rd. It marked the fourth time this season that the Elon nine had dropped a decision by a single run. The Christians grabbed an early lead when they used two Delaware errors and a sacrifice to plate a single run in the second. The Delaware out fit tied the score with a single run in the fourth, but Elon moved ahead again with a solo that came on two singles, a walk and an error. The line score: R.H.E. Bulldogs Win By^ 6-1 Score The Atlantic Christian Bulldogs turned back the Elon Christians 6 to 1 in a Carolinas Conference baseball battle at Wilson April 12th, with the Bulldogs getting all their runs in four middle innings. Jim Freisinger and Dempsey Herr ing were the top batters for Elon, each getting two hits in four trips, the bat. Sam Moon and Paul Amund sen combined for the mound work for Elon. Pembroke Is Winner Here The Pembroke Braves emerged vic tors in a 17 to 10 hectic battle with the Elon Christians on the Pembroke field on April 5th with the rival pitchers allowing a total of nineteen walks while allowing a combined total of fifteen hits and striking out fifteen batters. The Christians pulled back into contention with a 7-run uprising in the eighth when they used five walks, a hit batsman, a wil pitch and a three-run homer by Jimmy Freisinger to pull up to 14 to 8. Elon later added two runs in the ninth, but Pembroke had also added three in the eighth for the final 17 to 10 score. The line score: R. H.E.
