Friday, November 3, 1967 PAGE 3 Homecoming Ends In OLIPHANT AND MOORE PROVE VALUABLE IN ELON BACKFIELD 3? Views By JOE LEE David Oliphant (left) and Emery Moore (right) have played some excellent football for the Christians this year, Oliphant going full time at defensive halfback and Moore having earned a starting post at fullback. Both boys really came into starring roles as Elon toppled Catawba in that 31-29 thriller, for Oliphant returned a punt 57 yards for a TD and intercepted two passes, and Moore rushed for more than 100 yards and scored two of Elon’s four touchdowns. Oliphant is a senior from Mooresvllle, while Moore is a sophomore from Schenectady, N. Y. Willianis Is Proving Great Point Kicker Withall the excitement of Elon’s “NEW LOOK” in football, one hardly notices the hard work that has been put in by the baseball team this fall. Coach Jerry Drake be gan his fall workouts for the Christian baseball team on Sept. 19 with forty-two candidates re porting. Last season the club could manage only a mea ger eight wins in its twen- ^-eight game schedule. Out of these twenty de feats, ten games were lost by one run. Realiz ing that no team should lose that many close games, Coach Drake has emphasized hitting and offensive base running this fall. The team batting average least season was an anemic .216 percent. Of course, the fall rost er is far from complete, with many prospects be ing excused for various reasons. Among those ex pected on the diamond next spring that are miss ing because of varsity tootball are; Bur gin oeale, veteran of three seasons as a pitcher; Joe ^inaca, sophomore trans fer outfielder from the niversity of Virginia Uet s hope he helps the naseball team as much as has the football team); na Dempsey Herring, etterman third baseman, hit .327 last year; rank Mensch, sopho more catcher, who is also on the football squad. Al so joining the baseball team next spring will be Shelton Stewart, Tom Jernigan, and Tom Wat son. These men are also on the football team. There are a lot of ques tion marks which may de termine heavily the out come of the 1968 cam paign. Joe Byrtus, first baseman-pitcher under went a knee operation and is now recovering. Ed Kirchgessner, a sopho more starting pitcher; Steve Bird, relief pit cher; and Taylor Duggins, starting short stop last year, who batted .272 in his sophomore season. All are excused from fall practice for academic reasons. Larry Collins, senior pitcher from Jackson ville , Fla., underwent surgery on his left el bow and saw only limited action last year. Collins, the only left-handed pit cher on the staff, was an outstanding chunker two years ago, and hopes are that he will return to that form for the ’68 season. The four starting posi tions in the pitching rota tion should produce a very interesting battle. Vete rans Burgin Beale and Paul Amundsen could possibly lose their jobs to new prospects such as Dave Snyder (Orwigsburg, (Continued on page 4) Husky Perry Williams, the big Elon blocking back from Oxford, may go down in Elon football history as “True Toe Williams, for he is gaining a repu tation in his senior sea son as one of the finest place kickers in Elon Col lege grid annals. The big 210-pounder had never tried place kicking for extra points until this season, and he got his first test under fire when he booted a perfect three-for-three to win the Presbyterian game by a 21 to 20 count. He then added one in his lone try at Carson-New- man, and on Saturday,Oc tober 21st, four in four tries at Catawba and add ed in a field goal just for kicks. As a matter of fact, Williams kickedfive-for- five against the Indians, but one of his extra points did not count due to a penalty against Elon on one of his perfect boots. Not to be denied, Will iams just moved back five yards and kicked good a- gain. Then, with only sec onds on the clock, Will iams put the frosting on the cake for that Catawba game when he kicked a 28-yard field goal to pull Elon back in the lead at 31 I'o 29 in one of the most thrilling games in Elon grid annals. An Idea of the value of Williams’ educated toe can be had from the fact that Elon got only three good kicks after TD’s in ten games last fall and only four in ten games the autumn of 65. That means that Williams, with a per fect 8 for 8 in the last three tilts this fall has topped the output for two whole seasons just past. With Elon favored to win by a comfortable margin and move into a tie with Lenoir Rhyne for the Conference lead, the Christians had grabbed the lead on a quick 53- yard TD run by Gary Jordan and then fell be hind 7-6 when the Cats scored in the second quarter. At that point Burgin Beale threw the first of his two TD passes for the day, a 34-yard heave to Jim Waller that put Elon in front 12 to 7. Western Carolina got the first of two field goals to narrow the lead at half- time, and later the Cats got a second three-point er to go ahead again at 13-12. With just 1:46 left on the clock in the game. Western’s Paul Smith scooted 69 yards for the goal, and Western led 20 to 12. The Homecoming crowd started leaving the stadium, and then Beale went into action, complet ing three straight passes, the last a 20-yard TD throw to Richard Mc- George. Beale then threw to Jim Waller for the two-pointer that tied the game 20 to 20. It was another in the long line of exciting Elon Homecoming battles, so many of which have gone right down to the wire for a decision. The tie- score left Elon still sec ond behind the LR Bears, but it cost the Christians their chance to move ahead of the Bruins with a win at Newberry this week. FIGURE FACTS ElpiL W.
