Win Or Lose
By BOB WILLIAMS
With three consecutive
victories behind them at
this writing, the Fighting
t'firistian cagers are
really beginning to gel,
Md they are really a
tough combo out there on
court in this late sea
son. This is not at all
surprising, for it has been
anticipated all season that
ton would have to win
some ball games.
One reason that may
account for the recent

to reason that if
you practice on a court,
you are certainly going
to play better on it than
on some other floor.
When the team travels
to such schools as Wof
ford, Lenoir Rhyne and
Western Carolina, the
distance is so great that
the only supporters the
Christians take with them
are the coaches and the
players on the bench. Al
though the players are not
aware of individual
cheers while playing, the
cheer of delight after a
basket or stolen pass adds
incentive to better play.
In the Carolinas Con
ference the home court
advantage varies. At
Guilford College the
Christians play at con
siderable disadvantage.
Because the Quaker gytn
is old and small, the vi
siting team has to adjust
its play to the conditions
there. Another disap
pointing factor is that be
cause of inadequate seat
ing facilities, only the
Guilford fans are admitted
to the games. It is a
shame that such a situa
tion cannot be corrected-

Defeats P. C.
Five. 80 To 62
Moving to the front ear
ly in the game and given
a fight for only six min
utes of the battle, the
Fighting Christian cagers
rolled to a convincing 80
to 62 victory over the
Presbyterian Blue Hose
in Elon’s Alumni IVIe-
morial Gymnasium on
Saturday night, February
10 th.
With big Henry Goe-
deck ripping the nets for
33 points, his highest to
tal of the season so far,
the Christians took the
lead at 10-8 on a bucket
by Tommy Davis and were
never headed after that
time.
Goedeck banged in
17 points in the first half
and followed up with 16
additional counters after
the break as Elon put
four men in double fig
ures in the scoring col
umns, Goedeck also
spearheaded the Elon re
bounding as he pulled
down 20 loose balls off
the backboards,

Atkins Leads Late
Drive For Victory
Bobby Atkins had one of
his finest moments on an
Elon basketball floor
when he tore the nets
for 16 points in the final
five and one-half minutes
of play to pace the Elon
Christians to an 85 to
76 victory over the At
lantic Christian Bulldogs
on the Elon floor on Mon
day night, February 12th.
The victory, which was
Elon’s fifth triumph in
six starts, gave the
Christians a tighter grip
on the eighth spot in the
Carolinas Conference
standings and came close
to assuring Elon a spot
in the annual loop tour
ney. The win also aven
ged an earlier loss to the
Bulldogs at Wilson.
During the first half
the game was a close one,
with the lead swapping
hands ten times before
Atlantic Christian took
a scant 38-37 lead at
halftime. Then Henry
Goedeck hit a bucket to
open the second half and
shoot Elon ahead for the
last half drive.
The Bulldogs managed
to tie the score at 61-
all with 7:55 left on the
clock, but Elon quickly
moved ahead for keeps.
Bobby Atkins, who had
been sitting out with four
fouls, returned to the
game with 5:30 of time
remaining and personally
broke the tight contest
wide open.
The speedy guard hit
six of six charity throws
and rang up five field
goals on drives and jump
ers for 16 points in that
stretch drive, running his
total to 24 points for the
night, good enough to lead
both teams in scoring.
Henry Goedeck was
right behind with 23
pointSj, and Tommy Davis

The Elon College
Wrestlers, nearing the
end of their first season
of competition, hit the
high point of the season
when they gained three
falls as pace setters for
a well earned 23 to 11
victory over the N. C.
State grapplers of the At
lantic Coast Conference
in Elon’s Alumni Memor
ial Gymnasium Monday
afternoon, February 12th.
Gary Dean furnished an
early picture of things to

sed. David Oliphant got
Elon’s second fall over
Randy Bateman after 5:47
of the 137-pound match;
and Ralph Moore got E-
lon’s third pin of the day
over Dave Phillips after
4:53 of the heavyweight
clash.
Mixed with these three
fall victories, Elon’s
Buster Alston and Mike
Hughes won decisions,
and Tom Jernigan main
tained his undefeated rat
ing as he wrestled State’s
Allen Bowen to a draw in
the 152-pound match. The
State scores came on
three decisions and a
draw.
Emery Moore, who had
been undefeated in offi
cial competition for Elon
during the season lost a
special exhibition match
to Bob Brawley, a former
N.C. State star, on a fall
which did not count in the
team score. Brawley was
twice named outstanding
wrestler in the Atlantic
Coast Conference during
his varsity days at State.
