REID THIS
A DOG'S TAIL
It was about this time
of year.
Oh, maybe it was a
little colder than that
weather we’ve been hav
ing.
Luther Byrd was out
back of his place tromp-
ing around in the snow.
Lord knows what he does.
He just putters and tink
ers and messes around.
He has a masonry work
shop out there where he
says he does his Maroon
and Gold work, and he’s
always got a project of
some sort going. He even
built a brick dog house
with Georgian columns for
his dogs. 1 think he stole
the plans from Tara in
“Gone With The Wind.”
Anyway, it was that cold
day back five years ago
when Luther was out on
the back lot and thought
he heard a cry of pain.
As it was the time of
when Samaritanism was
“in,” Luther looked a-
bout. At first he saw noth
ing remiss. Then, when
he heard another little
moan, he thought there
was indeed something un
der a pile of leaves, and
by golly, it was a collie
pup.
Luther bent over,
scooped the decaying veg
etation aside and picked
the all-but frozen animal,
which had dug its way in
to the leaves to die.
At first, Luther’s wife,
June, was a little per
plexed. They already had
one dog, but she fixed up
a warm place in the kit
chen and spoon-fed warm
milk to the little crea
ture, which soon regained
its friskiness, but it
showed an alarming
trait — it seemed afraid
of human beings.
“1 think,” Luther told
June, “that somebody
must have given the pup
py to someone for a
Christmas present and
that someone evidently
failed to treat him right.”
The upshot was that the
Byrds had a second dog,
for they kept the pup,
which they called Ramb
ler, a namethat was shor
tened to Rammy. The pup
liked the Byrds, even lov
ed them, but for months
he kept his shy ways,
still afraid as he re
members his puppy exper
iences, but he now lives
with more trusting com
passion, though still a bit
fearsome of strangers.
And you know, when I
think of Rammy, I wonder
how in the world we can
quit having wars. If peo
ple are to get along with
each other, they have a
long way to go, because
what first happeaed to
Rammy shouldn’t happen
to a dog.
The Fighting Christians
used deadly shooting from
around the circle and pre
sented a balanced scor
ing attack with five men
'in double figures in de
feating the Pfeiffer Fal
cons 91 £0 84 here on
Wednesday night, Feb
ruary 14th.
The game, marred by
frequent and sometimes
questionable fouls, saw
the visiting Falcons get
into “one-and-one” free
throws within the first
six minutes, and Pfeif
fer had ten field goals
and twenty-two free
throws for a 42-point
half-time total. Only
some deadly field goal
shooting kept Elon ahead
by a 47-42 count at the
break.
The Falcons led only
once during the game at
3-9, and Elon quickly for
ged ahead at 4-3 and nev
er trailed, although Pfeif
fer did pull within two
points several times.The
Elon edge shrank to two
points at the 70-68 score
with 7:25 left in the game,
but the Christians quick
ly pulled out again and
held the lead to the end.
Henry Goedeck had 25.
and Tom McGee 20,with
McGeorge , Davis and
Marshall each hitting 11
points, in Elon’s balanced
assault. Jim Burkhart
topped Pfeiffer with 25
points.

If anyone doubts that Dr. J. E. Danieley, Elon’s president, is a redhot fan and
supporter of the Fighting Christian cagers, then they have only to look at the aoove
picture, which was snapped at one of Elon’s recent basketball victories in bion s
Alumni Memorial Gymnasium. The picture, which was snapped unknown to ur.
Danieley at the time, reflects complete enjoyment of one of the fine Elon plays in
the game. And, as all who attend Elon’s home cage games know, the picture migm
well be snapped many times during each game, for Dr. Danieley is one of tion
most faithful supporters and seldom misses seeing the Christians in action.
"Agnes, promise you won't
change after we’re married .
Keep right on working."
Wife to husband: “I
scratched the front fen
der a little dear. If you
have to look at it, it’s
in the back seat.”
The big-city news-
paperm an stopped to vi
sit with a friend who ran
a little country weekly.
“How,” he asked “can
you keep up your circu
lation when everyone al
ready knows what every
one else is doing?” “They
know what everyone’s do
ing,” the editor grinned,
“But they read the pa
per to see who’s been
caught at it.”
What’s New?

If the school is going
to require chapel attend
ance, the program s should
present something worth
while. Maybe they could
use two days for religious
services and use two days
for some sort of enter
taining program. In this
way, students could have
their pick of the two.
There is a great deal of
talent here at Elon in the
student body and faculty
alike. I am sure if the
programs were better the
attendance would zoom
sky high, and the people
attending would appre
ciate that dreaded half
hour! See you in Chapel!

stage. There are only a
few games remaining on
the schedule, and the
tournament is less than
two weeks away, with the
top eight teams in the
Conference battling for
the championship in four
nights of play at Win
ston-Salem on February
28th, 29th and March 1st
and 2nd.
This season brought
with it a pleasant surprise
in the excellent play of
newcomer Richard Mc
George, and it was also
marred by the loss of
fine junior forward Bill
Bowes to the biology de
partment.
For senior captain
Tommy Davis and speedy
guard Bobby Atkins,along
with Charlie VanLear, a
student assistant coach,
this season brings to an
end their years of cage
play at Elon. All three
have contributed greatly
to Elon basketball.
Looking to the future,
I see the Elon quintet
posting four other vic
tories before the season
ends, along with a fine
showing in the Carolinas
Conference tournament.
