Founders Day
Honors Go To
Royster/ Ritt
One^of the outstanding
“features of the annual E-
lon College Founders Day
observance on Monday of
this week was the presen
tation ofhonorary degrees
to Vermont C. Royster,
of New York City, who
was the guest speaker
for the day’s program,
and to Martin Ritt, of
Hollywood, Calif., an Elon
alumnus who has won high
acclaim for his work in
the entertainment world
of stage and movies.
rhe honorary doctor
ates were conferred at
the Founders Day convo
cation, which was held in
Elon’s Alumni Memorial
Gymnasium at 11 o’clock
on Monday morning after
Royster, a world-famous
journalist who is editor
of the Wall Street Jour
nal, had addressed the
large audience which at
tended the exercises.
Another special feature
of the Founders Day ob
servance was the unveil
ing of a portrait of Dr.
William S. Long, found
er and first president of
Elon College. The por
trait, which is a gift from
the Long family will hang
in the beautiful William
S. Long Student Center
that was dedicated early
last year.
The honorary degree
bestowed upon Dr. Roy
ster came as recognition
of the distinguished ca
reer of a native of North
Carolina. Born in Ral
eigh, Royster graduated
from the University of
North Carolina and has
previously received hon
orary doctorates from
both his Alma Mater and
Temple University.
He got his start in New
York as a reporter for
the New York City News

Elon Student Group Attends
Legislature Meet In Raleigh
Ten Elon College stu
dents represented the
Elon Student Government
Association at the thirty-
first annual Statewide
Student Legislature,
which held its 1968 ses
sion in Raleigh for four
days from Thursday
through Saturday of last
week.
The Elon delegates in
cluded George W. Scott,
chairman. Dale Morri
son. Noel Allen, Carol
Lupianacci, Randy Spen
cer, Paul Bleiberg, Kay
Savage, Barbara Hudson,
Susan Caviness and Don
Tarkenton, with Elon s
Noel Allen serving as
chairman of the Agenda
Committee for the group.
The bi-cameral State
wide Student Legislature
is modelled after North
Carolina’s General As
sembly, with both a House
of Representatives and a
Senate, and most of the
colleges represented last
week presented bills, with
the scope of the bills
covering the entire range
of activities of the state
government.
Actually, the bills pre
sented and the laws pass
ed last week had no legal
status, but in past years
the actions of the student
lawmakers have some
times been reflected in
the subsequent actions of
the regular North Caro
lina General Assembly.
Three years ago the Stu
dent Legislature passed a
law that required reflec
tor license plates for au
tomobiles and that type of
plates later was ordered
l)y the General Assembly.
The State Student Le
gislature was organized
in 1937 under the name
of the Student Legislative
Assembly, and many of
North Carolina’s gover
nors and other state of
ficials have since that
time either addressed the
group at its annual meet
ings or actually partici-
