Royster, of New York City, who was the guest speaker for the day’s program, and to Martin Ritt, of Hollywood, Calif., an Elon alumnus who has won high acclaim for his work in the entertainment world of stage and movies. rhe honorary doctor ates were conferred at the Founders Day convo cation, which was held in Elon’s Alumni Memorial Gymnasium at 11 o’clock on Monday morning after Royster, a world-famous journalist who is editor of the Wall Street Jour nal, had addressed the large audience which at tended the exercises. Another special feature of the Founders Day ob servance was the unveil ing of a portrait of Dr. William S. Long, found er and first president of Elon College. The por trait, which is a gift from the Long family will hang in the beautiful William S. Long Student Center that was dedicated early last year. The honorary degree bestowed upon Dr. Roy ster came as recognition of the distinguished ca reer of a native of North Carolina. Born in Ral eigh, Royster graduated from the University of North Carolina and has previously received hon orary doctorates from both his Alma Mater and Temple University. He got his start in New York as a reporter for the New York City News (Continued on Page 4) Elon Student Group Attends Legislature Meet In Raleigh Ten Elon College stu dents represented the Elon Student Government Association at the thirty- first annual Statewide Student Legislature, which held its 1968 ses sion in Raleigh for four days from Thursday through Saturday of last week. The Elon delegates in cluded George W. Scott, chairman. Dale Morri son. Noel Allen, Carol Lupianacci, Randy Spen cer, Paul Bleiberg, Kay Savage, Barbara Hudson, Susan Caviness and Don Tarkenton, with Elon s Noel Allen serving as chairman of the Agenda Committee for the group. The bi-cameral State wide Student Legislature is modelled after North Carolina’s General As sembly, with both a House of Representatives and a Senate, and most of the colleges represented last week presented bills, with the scope of the bills covering the entire range of activities of the state government. Actually, the bills pre sented and the laws pass ed last week had no legal status, but in past years the actions of the student lawmakers have some times been reflected in the subsequent actions of the regular North Caro lina General Assembly. Three years ago the Stu dent Legislature passed a law that required reflec tor license plates for au tomobiles and that type of plates later was ordered l)y the General Assembly. The State Student Le gislature was organized in 1937 under the name of the Student Legislative Assembly, and many of North Carolina’s gover nors and other state of ficials have since that time either addressed the group at its annual meet ings or actually partici- (Continued on page -j)
