Friday, October 4,1968 MAROON AND GOLO Page 3 Elon Tops Concord 66 To 12 THIS THREESOME GOT FOUR TOUCHDOWNS IN CONCORD GAME { P|ffV.S5 l3 iVew Elon Marks Set In Concord Victory Seventeen new Elon records and three Elon records tied were put on the books when the Fight ing Christian gridders turned back the Concord College Lions in Burling ton Memorial Stadium on Saturday night, Septem ber 21st. Burgin Beale, Elon tail back, grabbed off one new Elon offensive record for a single game when he passed for 368 yards on 15 completions in 21 tries, aclipsing the old mark of 363 yards set by Ed Wheless against Newberry in 1963. Beale also tied another single game mark when he threw five TD passes, squalling a record set by Wheless against Lenoir Myne in 1963. Other new tlon Records came when Richard McGeorge upped his own old mark for roost yards on passes caught to 180 yards, topping his own old mark against PC last fall. Beale upped his mark for passes completed to 583, for completions to 280, for total yards pass ing to 3869, for most of fensive plays to 729, for most yard total offense to 3909; and McGeorge improved his own marks for passes caught to 109, for most TD passes to 13 and for most yards on passes caught to 1695. The Christians also bettered four Carolinas Conference marks and tied three others in the 66 to 12 win over the Concord eleven, a team which rated 14th in NAIA national standings last year. Burgin Beale, shown left above, was the pass ing arm of the combination, and his two ends each grabbed two scoring passes each. The two veteran ends, both of them juniors, are Jim Waller (left) and Richard McGeorge (center). With each of the two ends grabbing two scoring aerials, the fifth TD pass landed in the arms of Joe Rinaca, speedy Elon wing- back. MOORE IS RUSHING LEADER Emerv Moore, junior fullback, was the top rusher as the Christians downed Concord 66 to 12 m the nrst game of the season. He gained 77 yards in 13 carries, averaging 6 yards per carry. Beale Passes For Five TD's To Pace Win BY BILL WALKER The Fighting Christian gridders rode the passing arm of Burgin Beale to a decisive and highly pleas ing 66 to 12 victory over the Concord College Lions in the opening game of Elon’s 1968 grid cam paign, a battle which was staged in Burlington Me morial Stadium before an enthusiastic crowd of 6,000 Elon supporters on Saturday night, Septem ber 21st. The Christian grid ders , hitting on all cy linders in a powerful of fensive exhibition, ripped over for five touchdowns before Concord could put a touchdown on the score board and claimed a 35 to 0 margin by midway the second period. The five touchdowns came on a 65-yard toss from Burgin Beale to Joe Rinaca, a 77-yard punt return by Ronnie O’Brien, an 11-yard toss from Beale to Richard Mc George, a 30-yard toss from Beale to Jim Wall er, and a 66-yard pass from Beale to McGeorge. After each of these five TD’s Elon’s Grover Hel- sley, a freshman kicking star, booted perfect placements for a 35 to 0 margin. The Concord Lions ral lied at that point to break the deluge of Elon touch downs with a score of their own, a score which came on a 31-yard pass from Randy Barnett to Jim Rudiger, but the kick failed to leave Elon ahead 35 to 6. Helsley then boot ed a perfect 30-yard field goal to give Elon a 38-6 lead at the half. The second half was a repetition of the first, with Elon dominating the play most of the way.
