Two Visiting Scholars Will Lecture On Elon Campus Greek Letter Groups Adding New Members On Fall Bids Two outstanding spea : ers will appear on Che Elon campus next week as features of the Visiting Scholars Program, spon sored by the Piedmont University Center, with the first set for Monday night and the other on Wednesday night. Dr. W. T. Jones, pro fessor of philosophy at Pomona College in Cal ifornia, will speak in Whitley Auditorium at 8 o’clock next Monday night, appearing as a guest of the Elon College Department of Philosophy and Religion, speaking on the topic of “Stance, Counter-stand and Meta- stance,” which is con cerned with various pos sible attitudes to adopt toward a rapidly chang ing world. The guest speaker, who has won wide recog nition for his work in the various fields of philos ophy, has been on the fa culty at Pomona College for thirty years. He has published a number of im portant books in his field, the latest being‘‘The Sci ences And The Humani ties” three years ago. Dr. John Spanier, of the University of Flor ida at GainesvilIe,Fla,, is the other visiting speaker for next week, being scheduled to speak in Whitley Auditorium at 8 o’clock next Wednes day night. He will speak on the topic of ‘‘The Im pact of Limited Wars Up on U. S. Domestic Poli tics.” In addition to his pre sent post at the Univer sity of Florida, Dr. Span ier has also taught at Haverford College and at the University of Texas. His fields of interest in clude international rela tions, military policy and strategy, international organizations, compara tive governments and var ied fields of political and social thought. Davis Speaks At E-4 Dinner Archie K. Davis, of Winston-Salem, chair man of the board of the Wachovia Bank and Trust Company, was the guest speaker at a dinner meet ing of community lead ers held last Thursday night as a feature of the Elon E-4 Fund Raising Campaign. A wide range of com munity and civic leaders of this area were guests of the college at the din ner in McEwen Dining Hall, with a special fea ture prior to the dinner being an “Open House” tour of the college’s new library building that opened this summer. WAA Names New Leaders For 1968-69 The Women’s Athletic Association has named Jane Crocker, of Mayo- dan, as president of the girls’ sport group for this 1968-69 term, according to an announcement just released. NEWCOMERS TO ELON FACULTY MRS. ANGELE AVIZONIS MISS ELOISE BAYNES Two additions to the Elon College foreign language faculty for this 1968-69 college year are pictured above. Mrs. Angele Avizonis (shown left), wife of Dr. Konstantinas Avizonis, chairman of the history depart ment, joins the faculty as assistant professor of German; and Miss Eloise Baynes (shown right), will be assistant professor of Latin. Mrs. Avizonis, a native of Lithuania, was educated in universities of Lithuania and Germany, and she taught German in various continental universities in Europe for fifteen years, and for the past fifteen years has been asso ciated with the professional library staff at the Uni versity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is listed in Who’s Who of American Women and Who’s Who in Library Service. Miss Baynes, who is native of Winston-Salem and holds the master’s degree from UNC-CH, has had long experience in public schools of North Carolina and was for several years a member of the faculty at Salem College.
