Page 4 MAROON AND GOLD FRIDAY. NOVEMBER 1.1968 Reid This § Appeal Made majorettes add greatly to elon band programs RVMOR HUMOR bince we ruled out coir limns for the Maroon and Gold, I thought I would write a column. Adviser Luther Byrd will howl, 1 know, but what the devil— he isn’t God. Actually, he and 1 are in agreement: A gossip column is a little below our standing. Still, I can not argue that this one- shot foolishness will be read more avidly than anything else in this is sue. Of course, I do hold a certain advantage — this being the only column. Okay. Read sharply: I’m curious as to what transpired after the Ap palachian football game with Buzz Ledford and Jimmy Daniels? I su spect Daniels was the only winner there. Led ford was in as bad a shape as our smashed team. A Civil War may have developed between Andy Morris and Eleanor Zez- zo. Gordy Payne and Kenny Shaw are ‘way ahead of me. In my time, we used to throw custard pies. Payne and Shaw are heav ing cake. This is October. Al ready, the goodly Sigma Phi Beta lads have cel ebrated the Fourth of July. Lord Red, known to close friends as Sandy Carrington, was another loser at the Appalachian bash: no date. Marty Bonnett, defen sive football star from Warwick, Va., runs a few offense plays toward San dra Dofflemyer, Bill Miele, umpiring from sidelines, may be figur ing on assessing major penalty for off-sides. John White and Janet Thornhill most puzzling. They request bus driver to turn off heat while de manding blanket. So, old H. just set the Maroon and Gold and journalism back twenty- two years, but permit me to brag. For an old guy who has been away from campus those twenty-two years, 1 think I did pretty good digging up gossip. Here Luther Byrd has been liv ing at tlon for the past 19 years and I bet there are some things in this column that might be news to him. JOHN ADAMS "Yesterday the greatest question was decided which ever was debated in Amer ica; and a greater perhaps never was, nor will be. d.e- cided among men, A resolu tion was passes) without one fiissenting colony, that those United Colonies are, and of right ought to be. free and irid»*p*?n^lent States.” Letter to Mrs Adams ‘July 3. 1776) For Letters It seems quite evident that some of these Elon freshmen do not write home as often as their parents would wish them to do, for last week the Maroon and Gold receiv ed by mail the following ■ appeal from a parent in Vienna, Va. The appeal was intended for inser tion as a personal ad vertisement, but the Ma roon and Gold does not use ads, so it is used as a news item. The appeal read as fol lows: “Middle - aged, greying and somewhat successful executive would like to correspond with young female student at Elon College, prefer ably with his daughter.” Name and address is withheld, but the young female student may be able to identify the send er by the home town ad dress of Vienna, Va. An additional clue lies in the fact that it came from Shenandoah Street. Name Leaders For Elon E-4 Funds Drive The appointment of ele ven team captains to lead the campaign for the Ma jor Gifts Division of Elon’s E-4 Development Campaign has just been announced by Dr. J. E. Danieley, Elon’s presi dent, who expressed plea sure that the citizens of the Burlington area have been so cooperative in the •campaign to raise funds* for the future of Elon Col lege. The Major Gifts Divi sion of the E-4 Campaign was launched this week under he direction of William L. Fayle, chair man, and R. Cruse Lewis, associate chaiman, both of whom are from Bur lington and both associat ed with the Burlington In dustries organization. 1 The eleven team cap tains, working under the leadership of Fayle and Lewis, include William S. Chandler, Kenneth S. Faucette, Buddy Holt, L. W. Johnson, Ben E. Jor dan, Jr., W.E. Love, Jr., Joe G. Mann, Thomas D. McGowen, Arnold L. San ders, Dr. Ludwig Scott and Dr. Carl Sellars. Each of these captains was to select three team members, andhe was then to join with them in mak ing approximately 150 contacts in the effort to raise funds for the col lege. The E-4 Campaign now has cash and pledges to talling about $1,300,000 mSSrn The five majorettes, who step high and pretty in front of the Elon College marching band at all its performances, add greatly to the band programs. The majorettes, pictured left to right above, are Adrienne Moen, of Belmar-Wall, N.J.; Karen Flynn, of Elon College; Kay Savage,of Whaleyville, Va. (Chief Major ette); Cleo Perdue, of Roanoke, Va.; and Janet Thornhill, of Chesapeake, Va., who was formerly the chief majorette at Frederick CollegCo Players Win High Praise From Critic (Continued from page 2) have been at times. Miss Condon made a strong Antigone. As Creon, Dale Kauf- mann’s delicate under playing resulted in some of the most ringing speeches in the entire play. Even his relaxed way of smoking a ciga rette contributed to the toward the final goal of $3,000,000, which is a preliminary goal to the eventual final goal of $5, 000,000 in the long range campaign. The E-4 title refers to the idea that “Elon Expands Its Edu cational Excellence.” effect. Mary Lee, in the role of Ismene, the sister of Antigone, delivered her lines well. Her impas sioned reply when An tigone asked her to help bury their dead brother was beautifully handled. James Gillespie, the narrator, had good dra matic movement, but his diction could have stood some improvement. Neil Henning, one of the guards, added a touch of humor with his stac cato Jack Webb-like man ner of speaking. Nancy Boone was per suasive as Antigone’s el-, derly nurse. Director Moffett put to gether an interesting evening of theater that had a great deal to say about the burning issues of our time. 1 11 1 \\ X?// “Nothing gets a group of women off the subject faster than her arrival.” i Always pass the ear ahead on curves or on hills. All of this means that the Elon grid squad will face one of its toughest tests of the 1968 cam paign when they move in to the Catamount stadium at Cullowhee tomorrow night for the annual clash between two old rivals. / 7^ ...forgirls who{/ike looking like girls / %•* ^ fus’SY Begin with silky smooth Liquid Make-Uo. tint with Blusher, finish with ‘Translucent" Pressed Powder.
