PAGE 4 MAROON AIMU GOLD FRIDAY, JANUARY 24,1969 Forty-Four Football Players Get Letters For ‘68 Season Forty-four members of the Elon College football squad were awarded ei ther letters or stars for their service with the Fighting Christian grid squad during the 1968 season, a campaign which ended on a happy note with the upset win over Lenoir Rhyne. Twenty-seven of the 44 Christian gridders re ceived stars as repeat a- wards, since they had pre viously been awarded let ters. The other 17 play ers received their first monograms for play dur ing the past season. The letter winners in cluded only four seniors, so the majority of them should be back for ser vice another year, bar ring academic difficul ties. Showing small resemb lance to the fast-moving combination that had trampled both Catawba and Guilford in two pre vious games, the Chris tian basketball squad ex perienced perhaps its coldest shooting streak of the year in losing a 97 to 75 battle to the Camp bell Camels here on Wed nesday night, January 15 th. The game was close for exactly seven minutes, but Campbell pulled ahead at 16-15 at that point, and Elon never caught up a- gain. In the final thirteen minutes of the first half, the Christians could hit only four of twenty-three floor shots for a 17.4 percent average, and that lapse in shooting proved fatal. The Camels were ahead by 18 points with a 44 to 26 score at the half-time, and the sharpshooting vi sitors widened that mar gin in the last half to the final 97 to 75 count. The Christians pulled within thirteen points of the vi sitors a couple of fimes, but that was the best they could do. Allen McRae hit 29 points and Cordell Wise 22 points to lead the Cam els to their wins, with two of their mates also in double figures. The Elon cagers had five men in the double-digit col umns, but none of them could match the shooting of McRae and Wise. Henry Goedeck and No ble Marshall each hit for 15 points to lead the Elon attack, but neither could hit like they did in bat tles with Catawba and Guilford. Other Chris tians in two figures were Tommy Cole with 14, Bill Bowes with 13 and Rich- and McGeorge with 10 counters. THE LINE-UPS Pos.
