Elon Places Three All-Conference Men The Fighting Christian basketball squad placed three men on the official Carolinas Conference all-star team for regu lar - season play, which was released from the conference offices in Winston-Salem by Jerry McLeese, the statistician for the loop. The three Christians who won berths on the team were Henry Goe deck, who made the All- Conference team 'or the fourth straight year; a- long with Richard Mc George and Captain Bill Bowes, both of whom won the all-star recognition for the first time. In addition to their Spots on the official All- Conference team, Henry Goedeck and Richard Mt:- George also won spots on the squad named by the Greensboro Daily News, with Bill Bowes getting a high honorable mention on the newspaper squad. The official AU-Con- ference included II men, since there was a tie for the tenth spot in the vot- jng by the loop coaches. The Elon quintet was the only team to place three with Catawba and ■'igh Point each winning two spots and with single players from Lenoir Rhyne, Western Caro- lina, Atlantic Christian and Guilford. The three All-Confer ence berths marked the hrst time in thirteen sea sons for Elon to place ^i^ee men on the honor group, and it is one of few times that any team has placed three ™en. Ths last time Elon ,ad three all-star picks one season was in 1956 when the Christians won the Conference title. The three Christians who won All-Conference positions that year were Dee Atkinson, Ed Jura- tic and Ben Kendall, and all three of them also won spots on the five-man first team at the close of the Conference tourna ment held in Lexington. Other All-Conference players named this year were Gene Littles and Jim Picka, of High Point; Dwight Durante and Gar land Davis, of Catawba; Greg Wittman, of West ern Carolina; David Smith of Guilford; Ed Carra- way, of Atlantic Chris tian and Bill Davis, of Le- noir Rhyne. McGeorge led the Conference in field goal accuracy with a ol. per cent on 1^5 bastet in 270 tries, and Bowes topped the loop in free throwing with ^0-3 cent on 69 baskets in 83 tries. Cole hit 13 points that night to give Wm Se rtan an 11-point average for regular-season play. The Elon Christians closed out their finest basketball season in re cent years with a thrill ing 68 to 67 victory over the Guilford Quakers on the Guilford court on Sat urday night, February 22nd, with the Christians having to battle all the way for the one-point win. That victory, clinched by Elon free throws in the closing minutes of the game, gave Coach Bill Miller’s cage squad a rec ord of 19 wins and 6 loss es in a 25-game sche dule, and it gave the Christians a second- place rating in the al ways tough Carolinas Conference with a mark of 13 wins and 4 losses in games with Conference foes. The Christians got their last field goal of the tight battle with Guilford when Tommy Cole hit with2:41 left in the game for a 62-61 lead, but six free throw baskets out of eight attempts in the final mo ments' of the game kept the Fighting Christians in com petition. Noble Marshall hit the last two charity tosses for Elon with 46 seconds left on the clock, and they put Elon in front by a 68 to 65 margin. The Quak ers came back after that and cut the Elon edge to a single point, and Marshall missed two charity tosses with twelve seconds remaining, Guil ford misseda last-second floor shot that could have won the game. Big Richard McGeor ge, Elon’s rugged junior forward who proved to be exceptionally tough on the inside, led the Elon forces to victory as he hit four of seven floor shots and sank 14 of 17 chances at the free throw line for a total of 22 points for the night. Other Elon players who were in double figures for the night were Tommy Cole with 13 points and Henry Goedeck with 13 counters. Bill Bowes, who had missed a week of practice due to a death in his family, turned in a fine game in spite of that fact and pulled down 14 rebounds for the Christians.
