THURSDAY, MAY 22,1969 NUMBER 28 GraduationScheduledSunday fiTree Get they speak at commencement Honorary Doctorates Three eminent men, in cluding two Elon alumni and one of the outstanding ministers of the Southern Convention of the United Church of Christ, will re ceive honorary doctor ates as a feature of the graduation exercises this coming Sunday, May 25th. The two alumni to be honored are J. L. Crump ton, long an outstanding insurance man in Dur ham, and Roy C. Rollins, of August, Ga., who has been an outstanding edu cator in Georgia for more than 30 years. The minis ter to be honored is the Rev. Robert B. Marr, pastor of the Suffolk Christian Church, in Suf folk, Va. Mr. Crumpton, who has been a member of the Elon College board of trustees for many years, is a na tive of Person County, N. C., and is a graduate of Elon College. After some years in school work, he entered the insurance business in EXirham. Mr. Rollins, a native of North Carolina, grad uated from Elon College in 1932 after four years as a brilliant athlete on Elon football and basket ball squads. In school work in Georgia since 1937, he is a superinten dent of schools. Rev. Robert B. Marr, who is to deliver the bac calaureate sermon on Sunday, is a native of Massachusetts, and he has held pastorates in several states before coming to Suffolk in 1962. White, popular director of the ^lon marching and con cert bands and member of the music faculty, was honored as “Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year” at the Awards Day program last week. He Was presented a silver bowl by Noel Allen, sym bolic of the order given him by the Student Gov ernment Association. Twenty - three Elon College students and one faculty member were presented with awards of various types, including trophies, cash awards or scholarships at the annual Elon Awards Day program, held in Whitley Auditorium on Thursday, May 15th. Included in the awards were several graduate fellowships for advanced study next year. Diane Gucker, of Edin burgh, Va., received a cash award in the form of a John W. Barney Schol arship, given eachy^rin memory of the late Prof. John W. Barney, mem ber of the Elon English faculty for 33 years. This award was presented by Prof. Fletcher Moore, Elon’s academic dean. The two Basnight A- wards, given each year in memory of the late Stein H. Basnight, of Chapel Hill, longtime member ot the Elon board of trus tees, were presented by two of his sons. The a- ward for excellence in Bible study went K> to ward McGinnis, of Dur- ma, and the award for ath letic ability went to Rich ard McGeorge, of Roan oke, Va. The William Moseley Brown Award, given each year by Sigma Mu Sigma Fraternity in honor of the late Dr. W. M. The annual award of the President’s Plaque to the outgoing president of the Student Government As sociation, was given by William Comninaki to Noel Allen of Burlington, Allen himself then pre sented other SGA awards_ to Paul Bleiberg, of Wil mington, Del., for ser vice as SGA vice-presi dent; and to Russell Sche- troma, of Natalie, Pa., for service as SGA trea surer. A special SGA award went to Phil Larrabee, of Virginia Beach, Va., as the outstanding mem ber of the Student Senate^ this year, and to Craig MacCreary, of White Plains, N.Y., to the non elective SGA participant who contributes most to the success of student (Continued on Page 2) The largest class in Elon College history will be presented diplomas and degrees when Elon closes its 1968-69 com mencement weekend with graduation exercises in Alumni Memorial Gym nasium at 3:30 o’clock on Sunday afternoon. Congressman Richard son Preyer, of Greens boro, representative from North Carolina’s Sixth North Carolina Dis trict, will deliver the ad dress to the large group of graduating seniors at the final exercises, which will be held on Sunday afternoon rather than on Monday morning as has been the custom for many years. That graduation pro gram will climax a week end of commencement programs which gets un derway with the Alumni Day events set for Satur day of this week, a day which will be filled from morning until late at night in activities for the re turning old grads. That Saturday program will open with the regis tration of the returning alumni, which will be held in the William S. Long Student Center at 10 o’clock Saturday morn ing, with the registration being accompanied by a coffee hour for the alum ni. The annual luncheonfor the alumni will be held in the Harden Cafeteria of the new Harper Center at 12:30 o’clock Saturday, followed by the annual alumni business meeting in the Harper Center at 2 o’clock. Another after noon feature will be a musical program in Whit ley Auditorium at 5 o’clock Saturday. The annual Alumni Banquet will be held in McEwen Dining Hall at 6:30 o’clock Saturday night, during which Dr. Daniel T. Watts, of Rich mond, Va., will be honor ed as “Alumnus of the Year.” All Elon graduating classes from years whose numerals end in four and nine will be returning for this 1969 commencement, with special honors for the Silver Anniversary Class of 1944 and the Golden Anniversary Class of 1919. The Sunday program, which doubles both the baccalaureate semon and the graduation exer cises, gets underway with the sermon to be deliver ed in Alumni Memorial Gymnasium at 11 o’clock that morning, delivered by the • Rev. There will be a lunch eon for seniors and par ents in Harper Center and a luncheon for faculty members and guests in McEwen Dining Hall after the sermon, followed that afternoon by the Presi dent’s Reception for sen iors in Ballentyne Lounge of Harper Center and the graduation program in Alumni Memorial Gym nasium. ■^ontinuea on rage z/ - LARGE GROUP GRADUATES Lftlmwh W mainder divided amo Another large group of Elon College seniors will move into the alumni ranks when the Class of 1969 receives diplomas and degrees in graduation ceremonies on Sunday af ternoon. The final list of grad uating seniors is not yet available, for the final examinations for the spring term had not yet been taken nor tabulated at the time this was writ- but indications are the Class of 1969 _ be by far the largest in Elon history. The Registrar s Office listed 242 students as candidates for graduation last week, but that list is subject to a number of changes as results of the spring examinations are recorded. Some of the candidate group may not graduate until the forth- Lming August com mencement. A study of the academic majors for the gradua tion candidates proved in teresting, with 36 major ing in history, 33 in ele mentary education, 28 in business administration, 23 in English, 21 in social science and 18 in physi cal education.
