March 12, 1970 Maroon and Gold Guilford Defeats Elon In CC Final Tom McGee (rt.) and Richard McGeorge receive the Runner-Up trophy for the Fighting Christians at Winston-Salem in the Carolinas Conference tour nament. Looking on is Miss Winston-Salem. Wrestlers Eligible For NAIA Finals Elon’s Tommy Cole (35) scores basket over Guil ford’s Teddy East (14). Elon’s Noble Marshall (33) and Guilford s M. L. Carr (30) and Eddie Dryer watch the action. Elon’s wrestling team entered the District 26 tournament at Guilford College with a regular season mark of 7-2. The tournament teams includ ed Elon, Guilford, UNC- Charlotte, and Pfeiffer. Elon and Guilford were co-favorites to take the team title. Guilford edged Elon 69 to 62 with UNC -Charlotte third with 34 points. Jim Hall, Elon’s out standing heavyweight, did not participate in the tournament. Elon and Guilford went into the fi nals with eight wrestlers each. Guilford got their break in the 167 lb. class when Wally Burke of E- lon and Cross of Guil ford tied in the regula tion time. The overtime also ended in a tie, and the hometown judges a- warded a referee’s de cision to Cross. Elon did survive the tournament with three champions, David Burke (142 lb. class), Ed Quin- livan (158 lb. class), and Ken Strickler (190 lb. class). David Burke and Ken Strickler completed their seasons with unde feated records. Finishing second in the tournament were Wes Freshwater (126 lb, class), Howard Pope (150 lb. class), Wal ly Burke (167 lb, class), A1 Covington Q77 lb. class), and Bo Perry (HWT,). Elon’s three first place finishers have qualified for the N, A. I. A, Na tional tournament in Su perior, Wisconsin, The national tournament will be held March 11, 12, and 13. Seventy schools will be represented in the tourney. Elon will enter another tournament in Boone, N, C, on March 20 and 21. Appalachian State will conduct the A. A. U. wrestling tournament in N. C. this year. Elon hopes to enter at least eight wrestlers in this tournament. McGeorge Ends College Career By RONALD WARREN & DAVID DUNKER After defeating High Point in the first round of the Carolinas Confer ence Basketball Tourna ment, Elon faced the equally second ranked Newberry Indians in the semifinals. The Christians strug gled with the Indians trading basket for bas ket and playing heads-up defense during most of the first half. The lead chang ed hands on numerous occasions and the score was tied often. With a- bout 5 minutes left in the half Trautwein, Cole, and McGeorge connected from the floor giving the Christians a twelve point advantage at the midway mark. The contest looked like an easy victory for the Christians who main tained a comfortable lead during the third and part of the fourth quarter. With 6:59 left in the game Elon enjoyed a nine point lead 66-57, Newber ry nibbled away at the Christian margin. In the next four minutes of play the Indians out scor ed the Christians 11 to 2 points. Tying the score 68-68, The Christians did not make a basket from the field during that cold period. The two points came on foul shots by Cole. The score was tied Aggies Nip Elon NAIA Semi-finals By RONALD WARREN & DAVID DUNKER For the second succes sive year, the Fighting Christians of Elon Col lege closed its season in the NAIA District 26 play offs, A&T University nip ped the Elon squad bring ing to an end an ex cellent 1969-70 basket ball season. The Christians held the upperhand during most of the game enjoying as much as a 10 point lead. In the first half Elon con trolled the tempo of the game. The Christians played a very deliberate and slow type of game working for the percent age shot. Elon hit well from the floor and grab bed crucial rebounds. At the half the Chrstians en tered the dressing room with a six point advant age 36 - 30, Tommy Cole tossed in 13 points from the floor with McGeorge and Marshall adding 8 and 7 points respectively. In the second half Elon maintained a consistant margin until an Aggie press brought costly turnovers. The Aggies cashed in these opportu nities and nosed ahead of the Christians in the fi nal portion of the fourth quarter, Elon led until on ly 3:11 was left in the contest when the Aggie s with 2:41 remaining. Cole then converted a clutch 3 point play. With 2:00 remaining in the contest Newberry tossed in a bas- Elon completed its 1969-70 basketball sea son with a 77-74 victory over the University of North Carolina at Char lotte in the consolation game of the NAIA District 26 tournament March 4. The Aggies allowed McGeorge to put in a lay-up with 2 seconds left making the final score 72 - 71, Tommy (Mr, Cool) Cole, the leading scorer in the Carolinas Confer ence Tournament, was high scorer in the game with 26 points. Senior Ri chard McGeorge closed out his basketball career with Elon with 21 points. Seniors Marshall and Mc Gee finished the game for the Christians with 13 and 2 points respectively.
