BROADSIDE TODAY ALL THE NEWS THAT’S FIT TO PRINT . . . BUT ISN’T ELON COLLEGE —AN S.G.A. PUBLICATION VOL. 1 WEDNESDAY, MAY 16, 1973 ELON COLLEGE, N. C. NO. 8 DENTON OUT, SMITH IN With the words “I hope I don’t have to work under the sanne con ditions he has” Mark Smith con gratulated outgoing S. G. A. Presi dent Jim Denton for a job well done. Presumably the "conditions” Smith was referring to were pressures applied to Denton by some of the college administration this past year. One can only guess what passed through Denton’s mind as he thought of those special Ad ministrative Hearing Committees that tried him for telling some girls to leave a men’s dorm but not turning them in. Or was he thinking of the time he was put before a court (not an Honor Court mind you!) for having a girl carry down luggage from his room after the final exam? Then again Denton could have been thinking of Founder’s Day — when all of a sudden Dr. Danlely seemed actually proud that Denton was President of the Student Body at Elon. But anyway, that’s history and Mark Smith, Mark Manclni, and Larry Anderson have their work cut out for them. Appointments have been scheduled already for Smith to meet with Elon’s next President, Dr. Young. With the new college presi dent coming in we can only hope that he will be more responsive to Student Government legislation. If not, Smith and Manclni have in dicated that if it is necessary, steps will be taken to reaffirm how strongly students feel regarding campus social restrictions. YEARBOOKS OUT The 1972-73 PHI PSI CLI is being given out this week in the William S. Long Student Center. The book, printed by Delmar Printing Company in Charlotte, NC is somewhat larger than last year’s edition. “We bought 16 extra pages this year so we could devote as much of the book as possible to candid shots,” said Suzanne Deloach, editor. "At least half of this year’s annual is nothing but candids because we feel like this is what interests the students most.” The book, the staff feels. Is evidence of the talent on Elon’s cam pus. Joanne Dean designed the cover, Faye Walton did an excellent job with the divider pages, and the EDITORIAL: — photographers spent a great deal of time printin he endless number of pictures that went into the book. “The staff has put a great deal of time in putting this yearbook together (some of our grades are evidence of that!) and we hope the students are as pleased with it as we are!” APO COMES THROUGH, AGAIN The S. G. A. would like to thank APO National Service Fraternity for the fine job they did this Spring Weekend in making it a successful one. Where Have All the Monies Gone? Elon College for the past several years has been drastically reducing its budget allowances for certain Liberal Arts study areas. All you have to do to verify this statement is ask any english or history major around campus. This scrimping and saving is commendable because several colleges and universities across the United States are experiencing financial difficulties. Elon, however, is not. The college is reasonably secure financially. This is evidenced by the massive renovation efforts that are being conducted on campus. Consequently, a disturbing thought comes to mind when one sits down and wonders how all this money, that is paid by students and parents every year, is being distributed among the vaious departments. The library, which should be considered any college’s academic strong point, was alloted $120,000 for the 1972-73 budget year. This was an increase of $1,450 over the previous year. But, compare this to $207,845, which the physical education department received this year. This is an increase of, now get this, $7,500 over last years allotment. Granted, there are many areas which comprise the physical education department, but how many actually major in physical education at Elon? Well at last count (spring semester 1972) there were only 200. That is 200 out of the 1,696 students which attend Elon. Could athletics be the reason why academics are being slighted at Elon? Are we actually receiving a "Liberal Arts education?” If athletics is not the reason why academics are being slighted at Elon, why is it that other subject areas are not as equally well endowed? One can only come to the conclusion after an examination of the facts, and there are many, that Elon has some cockeyed priorities. LITERARY WORK ESCAPE FROM ATOXIC PLACENTA by Ann White Why? When we see and feel something good. When we have dreamed of something honest — A straightforward step. A move you can see ALL THE WAY THROUGH — Look again and again, STILL looking through. And know it is true — A Crystal thought. An unblemished deed, A move — an attempt to change — To please — to improve — to make better. Why do you always falter? We the innocent. Yet not so innocent in your eyes. We the ones who are gnawed at from inside Because we still Believe. We who fight off the hateful obvious. We who look beyond your destructive criticism Because we must trust Our dreams. We who must be faithful to our Hopes For something better. We who have gritted our teeth Until our heads ache — We who have closed our eyes and our minds To your two-faced helpfulness. Your back-stabbing counseling. Your broad-mindedness Which allows us no freedom. Which considers us undeserving of respect — And which gives us no time to speak to you Because you are too busy listening to money talk — Why! Even within our cells we shy away from free expression. Afraid for anyone to know our private thoughts Except ourselves — For we know not who we can trust. We who pray He is saying about you — Forgive them for they know not what they do. You who have placed yourselves among the great leaders. The noble, and the true Who have told us in their times what They believe to be good in life. But unlike them you have not stated your beliefs and principles Allowing us time and freedom to use what you so fear — Our minds — Our own abilities to think — To decide — To mold — and to learn our meaning of good. Our philosophies of universal truth. The type of human beings we believe to be true. We who need to be molded by hope. Faith and the Truths we have found to work, To develop our own connotations of education. Sex, Religion, the Family, the State, And what our lives should be like. Instead you have placed yourselves At the right hand of HIM — And how can we place our faith in a Being Who loves, guides but never dictates. Allows for and understands in spite of. Because He knows. He has trust in — When we see your closed minds And hardened untrusting features Near a throne which if we could trust in Might be the base of our lives — Our lives which we so need to build about Dreams of Crystal thoughts. LETTERS TO THE EDTIOR Dear Editor, I want to take this opportunity to thank some people whom I have neglected to recognize for helping me out this year while serving with the Student Government. I am embarrassed to say that I never appropriately thanked Bill Crocker and Dave Bolton for pulling off the most successful campaign in Elon’s Student Government history last spring. Without their help I would never have been elected. There are many others — those girls who wore the T-shirts all over on election day! Thanks also to the two most responsible, my dog Steel, who has been a constant companion; and of course, my good friend, Kathy, for all of her timely assistance. There are others — Mrs. Lewis, Mrs. Bright, Jeanne — All of you, and many others, have made contributions to the operation of the Student Government in your own way that will not be forgotten. I would like to take this opportunity also to urge student involvement on the campus next year. It is an ideal time to do so, one that comes about every sixteen years. Jim Denton
