DIMENSIONS TODAY Vol. 1 ELON COLLEGE, MARCH 22, 1974 No. 1 Help, Help The GloboMnks — Tonight On March 22 & 23 the Department of Music of Elon College will present Gian Carlo Menotti’s Help, Help, The Globollnks: An opera in one act for children and people who like children. Production of an opera is an annual project of the Music Department. The performances are at eight o’clock Friday and Saturday evenings in Whitley Memorial Auditor ium. Admission is free. Terrell W. Cofield, production director of the opera, remarked that a work of this type was more technicially demanding on the musician than a production of a Broadway-type show. “The opera is intended to be a ‘growing experience’ for teachers and students alike,” commented Mrs. Cofield. She felt one selling feature of the opera is its short length . . . seventy minutes approximately. The uninitiated, she said, are often timid at even the mention of the term “opera”; however, this opera is creatively appealing to masses. The plot centralizes on the invasion of earth by the Globolinks, sinister, though humorous creatures from outer space who retreat only at the sound of music. The plot is didactic, though comicly satirical in nature, it’s underlying social comment being that man will not be totally submerged in a technological society as long as contact is maintained with the arts. Starring in the production are Lu Ann Morris, Jannel Johnson, Bill Griggs, Dan Harris, Miles Saunders, Barbara Welch, Dave Williams and Garth Schumacher. The children are: Mary Jabaut, Amy Watson, Marilyn Newton, Dana Larmore, Cheryl Mog, Becky Donnell, Linda Kelley, Roberta Harrington and Beverly Huffines. The Globolinks are: Len Burke, Carl Lvkes, Victor Cruise, Lorraine Hall, Larry Childress, Dianne Martin, Barry Staton, Dale Thompson, and Leslie Carter. Synchronization of the stage movements and the electronic tape segments with the challenging orchestra score requires the use of a stop watch by musical director Dr. Malvin Artley, Jr. The opera has been produced, of course, on a limited budget. Sets will be suggestive rather than representative in nature. It is hoped that the costuming will be one of the most imaginative facets of the show. There are, to producer Cofield’s knowledge no recorded productions of the opera that could have been used as a model. “We’ve had to make our own way,” she observed. Mrs. Cofield awards special thanks to Dr. Artley and Professor Trelles Case, who served as rehearsal accomp anist, and the Art Department for set and costume design. The writer, Gian Carlo Menotti is an American citizen of 1911 Italian birth. He composed his first opera at age 11, which was notable only for the fact that, in the final act, all the characters killed themselves. Menotti is noted for his acute sense of theater and his melodramatic techniques. His musical language tends to lean backward toward that of Giacomo Puccini an Italian composer whose works spanned the turn of the century. Menotti often achieves some very pastoral melodic passages within the framework of contemporary harmony. The work of four scenes was commissioned by the state Opera of Hamburg and had it’s premier on a double bill with the comooser’s popular “Amahl and the Night Visitors” on December 21, 1968, It is scored for piccolo, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, two horns, two trumpets, trombone, tuba, harp, piano, timpani, percussion, string and electronic tape. Cofield commented, this production at Elon is probably the first performance of Help, Help, The Globolinks in North Carolina. Previous Elon productions include Mozart’s “Cossi Fan Tutti”, Offenbach’s “La Perichole” and Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Pirates of Penzance.” by Peter Bissett and Carl Lykes The Future Forum: Where Is It Going? The Liberal Arts Forum, under the direction of Dr. John Sullivan, has set for its goal in 1974 the achievement of a new and broader base for its lecture series. New ideas brought to the Forum have resulted in the shifting of their for mat this semester. Dr. Sullivan feels that a more balanced program should be offered to the students. In the past, the main emphasis has been placed on the humani ties; this semester the Forum has moved into new fields such as science and religion. They have attempted to select speakers that are both scholarly and able to communicate with the audience. The past symposium of Science, Science Fiction and Religion illus trates these new ideas. Creativity was the key—the slide show that was presented brought immediate (Continued on Page 4) Pictured (from left to right) are Jannel Johnson, Bill Griggs, Garth Schu macher, Barbara Welch, and Dave Williams rehearsing on stage for HELP HELP THE GLOBOLINKS. Dr. Young Interviewed On March 15 with the aid of a previous interview by Pat Hughes Dr. Fred Young was interviewed. He revealed certain facts about the college of which he is president. The following news is factually based upon the results of the two interviews: Although there are no immediate plans for additional building some improvements need to be made. “We need more storage space in the gymnasium, we need a new tennis court, we need some re furbishing in the Student Union . . . that sort of thing.” As of next year, Elon College will not offer a major in either Spanish or French which will mean there will be no Foreign language majors. This is due to the small number of students interested in languages as their majors, and will result in a cut of teachers. “What we are try ing to do of course is work this out with a minimum of disruption and dislocation. So you are doing a variety of things: you have some retirement, you don’t employ any- (From left to right) Dave Williams, Garth Schumacher, and Jannel John son are shown as the opera continues to rehearse. body, and you do some cutting of staff. It is a little hard to be speci fic on that without getting per sonal.” The Campus Life Committee of the Board of Trustees has asked the office of the Dean of Students and his associates to review and report on some of the student af fairs (such as drinking and visita tion). Perhaps, “I think all regula tions regarding student life. I’m not sure of the exact wording.” He re minded that, “When they ask for a review and a report, that does not necessarily mean change; or it may mean change.” The review and report are due at the October meet ing of the Board. Until the hiring of the new Vice- President Dr. Monclure the office of Dean of College and Administra tive Assistant to the president were vacant. (Dean Theo Strum had the responsibilities of the Dean of Col lege.) “So, I am combining those two and changing the role in a number of spots and changing somewhat the role of what the president will do in that I expect to focus much more of my attention externally: finance and long range plans. He will be the chief internal operating officer.” Dr. Young will work primarily with finances; Dr. Monclure will work internally. To gether they will formulate long range plans, one dependent upon the other. “If we can’t give a guaranteed mass buying, mass produced sort of food service operation, your cost will go up. Our food is really eco nomical.” (Yet, the quality is ques tionable?) “I have already talked with Mark Mancini and if there is any desire on the part of the student government and desire to work to examine the food situation that we set up a committee or something of that sort that I would surely be pleased to do so. There are some considerations” . . . one that institutional food has to be cooked in bulk, the second thing is that anyone who has to eat it regularly gets tired of it and the third thing is that with the mass buying we are able to keep the price down.” There was no men- (Continued on Page 4)
