Several of Elon’s intercollegiate teams
have begun practice In preparation for the
upconning spring season contests..
Coach Bill Morningstar and assistant
coach Dr. Charles Harris and their golf
team have already been tested twice. On
each occasion the team passed w/ith fly
ing colors. On March 11 they met Lynch
burg College and beat them 437 to 371.
Two days later a second victory was
tallied against Atlantic Christian by a
score of 17'/2 to 6V2.
Members of this years team are Bill
Alklns, John Baxter, Ray Dodson, Jim Holt,
Greg Nance, Billy Overton, Chuck Scott,
and Jim Simmons.
This year the Elon golfers will host the
District and Conference tournament. The
tournament will take place April 29-30 at
Piedmont Crescent.
Elon’s tennis team has a couple fine
points added to it this year. One addition
is the construction of several new tennis
courts. Bleachers are also provided. Now
the tennis team will be able to host all
their guests on the Elon College campus.
Another new addition deserves attention—
It's a womens team coached by Kay Yow.
The men's team began their season with
a victory against Pfeiffer by a score of 6
to 1. The men are once again coached by
Jerry Tolley.
The womens team will begin with a
scrimmage match against Guilford on
March 21 at Elon. After being away for
the first four regular matches the ladies
will return to Elon on April 18 to play
Pfeiffer College.
The Baseball team came away with 2
victories over Mitchell College on the 9th
and 10th of this month by scores of 3 to 0
and 6 to 3. They dropped the first game
of a double header on the 10th by a score
of 7 to 1.
Women End Suoer Season
The womens basketball team traveled
to Harrisonburg, Va. for the regional
basketball tounament on the weekend of
the 9th after being victorious all regular
season. The ladies met their first and
only defeat of the season in the first
round of the tournament against a sharp-
shootinq team from Winthrop College,
South Carolina. The final score was 68
to 53.
Spurred on bv their coach, Kay Yow, the
girls then went on to the consolation
bracket where they went back to their
winning ways. The University of Kentucky,
Madison, and Eastern Kentucky all met
defeat by scores of 63 to 50, 68 to 56,
and 64 to 61 respectively. From the effort
against these three teams Elon claimed
fifth place In the regionals. Seniors this
year are Debbie Yow and Debbie Timber-
lake.
The ladies 73-74 schedule was certainly
impressive. In only their 3rd official season
they have become the North Carolina State
Champions. On their way to claiming this
title they composed a perfect season con
sisting of 14 wins against 14 opponents.
Twice this year the ladies broke their
scoring record which now stands at 79
points. These 79 points were handed out
to Campbell in a 79 to 42 victory which
was their largest win of the season. The
ladies finished the year with a record of
20 wins and only 1 defeat.
Susan Yow, Sherry PIchard, and Wanda
Wilson have been named to the all state
team. Susan Is a sophomore while Sherry
and Wanda are freshmen.
Coach Yow and the team put forth a
fine effort this year. They were an im
pressive bunch and represented Elon in
the finest manner through the entire year.
Congratulations on an excellent season.
Members of the team are Beth Beaty,
Joyce Daniel, Teddv Ireland, Cindy Leach,
Laurie Newman, Sherry PIchard, Sandy
Sykes, Debbie Timberlake, Wanda Wilson.
Debbie Yow and Susan Yow. (Thanks B.B.)
Did You Know That . . .
Roy Edward Carlyle in a minor league
game at Emeryville Ball, California on
July 4, 1929 hit the longest measured
homerun—it was 618 feet.
The highest catch was made by Joe
Soring in San Francisco. The ball was
dropped from an air ship at about 1,000
feet. He caught It on the fifth attempt and
the force of the ball broke his jaw.
Streak Team
The Elon College Streak team posted
it's first victorv of he school's history on
March 4th. This match enabled Elon to
keep in Stride with other schools around
the country such as Carolina, Clemson,
Greensboro, Marvland, Columbia, Harvard,
Colorado, and West Point. Although Elons
team was not as large as some schools,
the enthusiasm ran as high as anyone’s.
Another page is written in the history of
the heritaae of the American College.
The rest of the season is Questionable.
As of now Elon’s schedule Is bare—about
as bare as the streak was.

tion of this at the Spring Board
meeting. It could seem the stu
dents are the only ones aware of
the problem. “They are the ones
directly concerned. The point I
make though is that the students
have access to the Board when
they want to use it.”
Dr. Young stated that, “We need
to increase the variety and type of
student activities to insure that the
campus continues to be a very
positive, wholesome and pleasant
place to live, where students enjoy
living.”

response from the audience. The
rapport between the speakers and
the audience was exceptional. The
turnout was good, crowds were
estimated between two and three
hundred at every lecture of the
four day symposium. This great
increase in attendance was well
received by the members of the
Forum and they continue to urge
evryone to attend their upcoming
lectures.
The next presentation will be The
Carolina Theater performing the
drama “Antigone”, on April 19 at
8:00 p.m. in Whitley Auditorium.
The play will be immediately fol
lowed by a discussion of questions
on law and order.
The Spring Symposium, the
Forum’s main event of the year, will
take place from April 24 through
the 26. The topic of this symposium
is “Toward Freedom and Dignity:
An Appraisal of the Humanities in
Transition.” It will feature such
speakers as Allan Bloom of the
University of Toronto, Paul M.
Crowleyof Boston University, J. H.
Plumb of Cambridge, Stanley Re
main Hooper of Syracuse Uni
versity, William Barrett of The Fog-
ler Shakespeare Library, and others

to be announced. The Spring Sym
posium, is being funded by a
matching grant from the North
Carolina Committee for the Con
tinuing Education in the Humani
ties.
The Forum has been restructured
to better suit the needs and tastes
of both the students and faculty as
well as that of the community. Con
tinued enthusiasm on the part of the
Forum members and the new ideas
from Dr. Sullivan guarantees the
success of the Forum lecture
series. Dr. Sullivan urges more
people to give the Forum a
chance. He feels that if the audi
ence is given a humanizing experi
ence, they will be more likely to
come back. As an added incentive
to increase student participation
college program credit has been
offered on all Forum lectures.
