SPRING WEEKEND — 1974
Tomorrow night, the Elon
College Entertainment Com
mittee will present the rock
group MOUNTAIN, in concert.
The concert is scheduled to
begin at eight p.m. and it will
be held in the gymnasium.
MOUNTAIN, a well-known
rock group, made its begin
ning in July of 1969 at the
Fillmore West. In August of
that same year the group
appeared at the now famous
Woodstock Festival. From
there MOUNTAIN went on to
tour the United States perfor
ming at most of the major rock
festivals. After completing
their U. S. tour, they left the
States to hit such countries as
England and Germany.
In the winter of 1972,
MOUNTAIN broke-up when
Felix Pappalardi, the leader,
left the group so that he could
concentrate on composing
classical music. Soon after
this break-up occurred. Jack
Bfuce, of Cream, teamed up
with Leslie West and Corky La-
ing to form WEST, BRUCE &
LAING. Together they toured
the U. S., large sections of
Europe, and cut several
albums.
In August of 1 973,
MOUNTAIN was re-organized
by Felix, This reunion was
followed by a very successful
tour of Japan. MOUNTAIN
then came back to the United
States to wind up their tour.
All of the MOUNTAIN recor
dings (on Columbia/Windfall
Records) have made the U. S.
charts. “Mississippi Queen,”
"For Yasgur’s Farm,” and “The
Animal and The Toad” all
MOUNTAIN singles, have
made the top one-hundred.
Their cuts, “Climbing” and
“Nantucket Sleighride,” are
certified gold. The MOUNTAIN
recordings on “Woodstock M”
also hit the charts.
Students are reminded that
I.D.’s are required for free en
trance to the concert. Only
married students may gain en
trance on one I. D. Also, tickets
are on sale at the door and in
the campus shop for three
dollars.

A NEW MAN IN THE FOOD
Mr. Howard Southerland
who has assumed respon
sibilities as head dietician at
Elon since March has already
made many welcome changes
and anticipates more to follow.
After having been employed
at Clemson University and
Citadel, both of South
Carolina, he replaced Mr.
Steve Bucko and now strives
for better food and conditions
in the cafeteria. “One of the
main objectives of myself and
the staff will be to improve the
taste and quality of the food
we serve. We will try to
prepare and season the food
more carefully than in the
past.” he explained.
Cake and ice cream and
spaghetti all-you-can-eat
nights have already been en
joyed by the students. “By
next fall I hope to schedule
special nights to break the
monotony of the same old
menu, he replied. I also would
like to see more cookouts dur
ing good weather and steak
served every Saturday instead
of only twice a month if and
when the prices on beef
change.”
Students are encouraged
by Mr. Southerland to express
their likes and dislikes to him
and the cafeteria staff. “I
would like an open line of
communication between
students and all of the con-
stitutents of the cafeteria. If
there are any compliments or
complaints, we are anxious to
hear them. This also applies to
the varsity grill, anything
different that the students
want of the menu we will be
glad to consider.”
Howard Southerland is aim
ing to make the cafeteria and
its duties as pleasurable as
possible. “I’m glad to be here
and if there is party or recep
tion I can help with I want the
students to feel free to contact
me. The students can help the
cafeteria by refraining to take
food and serviceware out of
the cafeteria which causes ex
tra confusion and added ex
pense. Again, I wilt-say that I’m
pleased to be a part of Elon
College and will try to con
tribute to the success of 1974-
75 by making the meals more
enjoyable.”
