Presbyterian Grabs Victory
Great defense, Presbyterian! Elon offense pushes toward goal.
Booters Bow to UNC-CH
On Tuesday, October 15, Elon
hosted the junior varsity squad
from the championship team of
UNC at Chapel Hill. Even
though it was the J V representing
Chapel Hill, there was an
abundance of talent gathered by
the recruiting of Chapel Hill.
C.H. won by a score of 5-0, but
their play was nothing
spectacular. Elon started
working the ball late in the game
but still could not score that long
awaited goal.
On October 18 the soccer team
finally got on the winning side of
things as they beat the young
Playoffs Cancelled
The young Elon soccer team,
in sight of their first conference
playoff berth, met bitter
disappointment when it was
learned that the playoffs had
been cancelled. It has been
understood that the cancellation
occurred because of financial
difficulties. The playoffs were
originally planned for October
31-Novemter 2.

team of Louisburg College. An
early score was walked in by
Norman Downey which put Elon
ahead 1-0. The game continued in
a kick and run style characteristic
of inexperienced play. The hectic
play forced a mistake by a
Louisburg player which resulted
in an Elon goal (compliments of
that Louisburg player). The
second half was more controlled
by the Elon club. Scott Gorman
burst through the fullback line
for an unassisted goal making the
score 3-0. The game was more or
less a practice one for Elon as
reserves started and played as
much of the game as the first
string. The Louisburg game took
the place of a match with East
Carolina, originally scheduled to
play Elon but cancelled.
United Fund-103%
by Debbie Cochran
"Elon students, faculty and
staff contributed to a '103%‘
effort in regard to the United
Fund," said Tom Bass, campus
United Fund chairman.
Contributions taken for a week in
October exceeded $2,654, the
goal set by the Alamance United
Fund.
APO fraternity members
accelerated the effort by
collecting $150 in one and a half
days, pushing the total $75 over
the mark. Robert Baxter, college
vice-president, serves as
Alamance division chairman for
1974-75.
The United Fund aids such
organizations as the YMCA,
USO, Red Cross, Salvation
Army and many others. Locally
it aids the Alamance AA, the
Association for Retarded
Children, services for the elderly
and inner city youth.
On October 19 Elon lost its
first game of the season to a
psyched and impressive
Presbyterian College team. The
Blue Hose scored first, late in the
first quarter on a 40-yard pass
play. Minutes later after
recovering an Elon fumble a
27-yard field goal upped the
score to 10-0. Elon s first score
was a gift as a bad snap went
over the punter's head and into
the end zone for a safety. This
made the score 10-2. In the final
minutes of the half the Blue Hose
again struck for seven points
after a seventy-five yard drive.
Down 17-2, Elon came out
ready to go in the second half.
Gary Darnell scored on a fine
21-yard run but the 2-point
conversion failed. The Blue
Hose again established an
offensive drive which took them
to the Elon 17. Another field goal
set the score at 20-8. Elon finally
got its predominately pitch-back
offense moving as they drove 53
yards for their second TD. A
Presbyterian fumble two plays
later was recovered by Jerry
Alford on the Presbyterian 20.
Elon drove down to the two-yard
line where they received a first
down, but the Hose defense
held. With and fourth and one
situation, quarterback Phil
Bracco hit Gary Stafford for the
score. The extra point kick was
made and Elon, after a great
comeback, found themselves
back in the game with
momentum in their favor. Down
23-21 with seven minutes left,
Eton's defense came up with a
lot of pressure which paid off
when David Wood intercepted
on the Hose 21. This set up a
field goalattempt from the 38.
The. ball floated toward the goal
and hit upright and bounced
away from the goal. This enabled
Presbyterian to hold on to a 23-21
victory.
Elon's Fighting Christian
football team recorded its fourth
and fifth victories in its last two
outings of the 1974 season to run
the record 5-0. A good
Homecoming crowd witnessed
the Christians give up their first
points of the year but still hold on
to defeat a strong
Carson-Newman team by a score

A "committee to investigate

into the food situation.
Committee aims are to gather
facts about cleanliness and
quality of the food.
Other colleges have been
contacted concerning their food
services. Elon students will be
polled and the results given to the
administration. "This committee
is very enthusiastic, and there is
a great chance that finally
something will be done about the
food. The mistake of the
committees in the past is that
they didn't make use of their
findings," Mancini said.
The coffee house has been

of 21-7. Alex McMillan and Phil
Bracco led the offensive attack
with McMillan scoring two
touchdowns and Bracco picking
up 62 yards on the ground.
Dwight Shoe, Paul Pope and
David Woods led the defense
with an interception each, while
Shoe recovered a fumble as well.
The tough Christians then
traveled to West Virginia to play
Bluefield State whom they
soundly whipped 24-0. The
Christians led by a score of 9-0
after three quarters. The game
could have been completely
turned around if the Bluefield
Starters had scored here, but the
Christian defense was too much.
Aggressive Randy Oxendine
boosted Elon's lead with a
safety. This led to a one yard
touchdown plunge by Prince
Deese, and a four yard
touchdown pass from Fred Long
to Rodney Evans.

The women's intercollegiate
volleyball team is off to a great
start. With the talent Elon has
thus displayed on the court and
the leadership of Coach Kay
Yow, it looks like this could be a
record season.
The team began playing
September 21 and has been
victorious over ASU, UNC-G,
ECU, High Point, Duke and
Catawba.
The 14 players include three
freshmen, C.B. Brannon, Pam
Clark, and Jackie Mayers. Other
teammates are transfers, Tina
Ireland, sophomore and junior
Cindy Leach. Sophomores
include Joyce Daniels, Beth
Braxey, Sherri Pickard and
Wanda Wilson. Sandy Sikes,
Teddi Ireland and Susan Yow are
junior players and Laurie
Newman and Becky Currin are
seniors. Linda Frances, junior, is
the manager of the team for the
third year.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Hadden
commented on the differences in
Western and Chinese music.
“The Western musician is
allowed to create music which
appeals to him. There are no
specific goals for the Western
musician. He is allowed to let his
creativity flow. On the other
hand, the Chinese musician is
restricted in his creative
endeavors. The aim of his music
is to involve the people. He
accomplishes this by arranging
old Chinese folk tunes into
concertos and operas which are
then presented to the people for
approval. As this process takes
from two to four years, only one
concerto and a few operas have
emerged. When asked to
comment on the level of musical
sophistication, Mrs. Hadden
replied that “The Chinese
people's level of musical
appreciation is 50% higher than
ours. The young Chinese
person's 'pop' music is the
opera."
