The Pendulum February 18.1975 Page Four Elon College Baseball Squad Ready for Action By Gary Spitler The 1975 edition of the Elon College Baseball team is about ready for another year of Carolina’s Conference competition. After completing the 1974 season with a CC title, the Christians are again ready to clinch another title. In an interview with Assistant Coach Mike Osborne, I learned several interesting facts concerning this year's team. "Pitching,” commented Coach Osborne, "will be one of the determining factors as to who wins this year's CC title." Several players from last season will return this year. These include: Kent Smith, a right-handed pitcher: Byron Dickens, a left-handed pitcher: Pat Grady, behind the plate: Tony Mullins and David Vaughn, first base; Hans Frey and Jim Garnett, second base; Phil Bondurant and Bob Stratton, short stop: David Park, third base: and Doug Williams, Al Breed, Frank Currin as outfielders. These players and the rest of the squad to be chosen will surely make another good year. Coach Osborne added several comments as to what to expect this year. "Our CC conference is the strongest in the area. We (Elon) won the title last year and High Point traveled to the national playoffs. 1 seem to think that the conference championship will boil down to coming between: High Point. Pfeiffer and Elon. I am really impressed with the enthusiasm shown by this year's players. We are going to need a team effort in order to win the title. It takes every player on the team, not just a few." The 1975 baseball team will be represented by nine bat girls whose pictures will be shown in a later issue. Coach Osborne played on the Elon College Baseball team for four years and was all-conference three of those years. He is currently a senior. The 1975 baseball season gets under roll on Sunday March 9 when the Elon College Fighting Christians face West Virginia Institute on the Elon field at 1:00 p.m. Students are urged to support the team and attend the games. The Elon Sports Corner By Gary F. Spitler Athletic scholarships for the 1976-77 school year will be cut according to reports from the commissioner of the Carolinas Conference. The cut will make available only 18 football and seven-and-one half basketball aids. This decision resulted from a meeting of the college presidents of all the schools in the Carolinas Conference. This decision has not been fully accepted and further action is expected. In my brief talk with head Athletic Director Coach S.S. “Red" Wilson, I got some idea of the situation. This conference action was voted on by the presidents of the conference colleges. The only scare to us (Elon) is that Lenoir Rhyne has stated that they may drop out of the CC conference, reducing the conference to only four teams. There is concern that the conference could be at an end. The athletic program at Elon has become one of the finest in the nation, and money cuts will reduce our ability to recruit like Elon Women’s Intramural Program Off to a New and Running Start By J.E. McGann The women's intramural program has been established at Elon and it is time for fun, exercise and fellowship, according to the girls who've tried it. The winning volleyball team this year was Staley first floor, but second place went to second Virginia. The two teams had a championship playoff game and as the teams were playing, player Jane Clark of second Virginia's team fell to the floor with a knee injury, leaving second Virginia with five players. The game continued, however, and Chrystal Catlett, president of the WAA said, "Both teams gave it all they had. but Staley pulled through with a victory score of 15-8." The players on the first place team included Debbie Moore, Janice Carter. Cheryl Butler. Toni Navarro. Cynthia Sapp. Kathy Peterson and Candy Foxx and Connie Templeton. Second place players were Sherri Link, Debbie Lynch, Debbie Cochran, Debbie Vaughn, Jane Clark, Patti Burnett and Janey McGann. The WAA urges women students to include the intramural program in their schedules. (Photo by Dave Shuford) Cut High Costs and Have Fun Too — Ride a Bike other schools. All of these ideas are very premature but should be known in this time of change. In the last two years Elon College has had the honor of having two football teams in the NAIA final and semi-finals. Abilene Christian, whom Elon faced in the NAIA finals in 1973, has about 45 scholarships while Elon is being cut to 18. Henderson State, whom Elon played in the 1974 championship, has 33 football aids to offer incoming students. How can Elon keep up in recruiting if this comes about? It will be a hard road to hoe, but not yet have they let us down. This action could cause Elon to head into what no one wants to see — losing season. This bit of news is one of many I hope to have in the future. I will welcome any news and am hoping to have a few of our coaches write this column during the year. Not to me: I already have a VW. But I'm basically a cheap person, and to cut costs further. 1 ride a bike. Their popularity in the last few years is obvious. After taking a nose-dive around the 30s, they are at their highest peak in sales. The last two years they've outsold cars. In Washington, D.C., you have to hire an Indian guide to lead you to a bike shop that has one new bike left on the floor. Mechanically, bikes are simple and precise, and, although they have delicate parts, they are expected to carry ten times their own weight. This is equivalent to the average car carrying 15 tons, and that would equal two hundred 150-pound men or women. Speaking of ladies, especially 200-pound ladies who want to lose weight, bicycling is an enjoyable and practical means of reducing. As a form of exercise, it ranks in the top four. You can burn up 300 to 400 calories an hour. There are other advantages to biking. A bike doesn't use gasoline. There is no age limit for bikers. It takes little athletic ability. It's not boring (when a big dog comes after you, it can be exciting!). It reduces tension, renews energy. In fact, according to a recent Harvard study, regular biking can add as much as five years to your life. With the bike traffic growing, special pathways have been made and bike racks are found in many places, even here at Elon. You can spend a lot of money on a bike, as much as $800, but $120 can easily satisfy the needs of an average biker. Taken care of properiy, a bike can last many years, I don't understand why more people don't ride bikes at Elon, There are many bikes, and co-ed biking is allowed (I think). On a bike you can discover a world without walls, ceiling, blass —a worid full of fresh air and, often, silence. You can discover the joy of being self-propelled. Wrestling Team Gets Ready For Tourney The 1975 edition of the Wrestling Team has proven to be one which is very productive. In an interview with Head Coach Mickey Brown, I discovered some Interesting facts about this year's team. Coach Brown seemed to be pleased with the performance and enthusiasm of this year's team. They have 25 guys, a record number for Elon College. In a match with Winston-Salem State, Elon participated in all 10 weight divisions. Elon will have the pleasure of hosting the 1975 Area 7 Tournament at Elon College. Wrestling competition will come from Virginia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. Eleven or twelve schools will compete in this year's tournament. Two Elon fighters are still undefeated in wrestling competition. These are Prince Deese, a two-year state champion, and Danny Bass. Cfanny won the heavy weight division in a recent match with Pembrook State. Danny claimed first place. All students of Elon College should take advantage of this opportunity and see Elon in competition. The Area 7 Tournament will be held in the Elon gym on February 25 and 26. Be sure to attend. 1975 Tournament Tickets On Sale Elon College's basketball team will venture to Lexington, N,C,, on Feb, 27 and 28 to make another stab at the CC title. With ■the Christians having a rather rough season, they hope to lake the title at the end of the month. Students are urged to support the team and travel with them to Lexington, Tickets are now on sale at Coach Wilson's office for $2,50 each. Women Cagers Underway And Going Strong By J.E. McGann The women's intercollegiate basketball team is underway and going strong. The women started Jan. 17 when they traveled to Chapel Hill and met their opponent UNC-CH and were defeated. Although they lost a couple of their first games, it seemed to make the team more determined because since then the women have been racking up the victories. The cagers took first place in the tournament held Jan. 31 and Feb. I here at Elon. Second place went to South Carolina and third place to E.C.U. Coach Kay Yow has a 12-player team with two assistants. The girls are Laurie Newman, a senior back for her fourth year, Teddi Freland, Susan Yow and Cindy Leach, juniors; and returning sophomores Sherri Pickard. Wanda Wilson, Beth Badey. and Joyce Daniels. Freshmen this year include Cindy Leach. Candy Foxx, Jackie Meyers, and Sandy Partridge. Linda Francis is the manager, and the scorekeeper is Susie Edwards. The ladies' last home game was at 7:30 p.m. on Feb, 12 when the cagers played Wake Forest University, Football Notice Spring practice for the Elon College football team will be held on Monday.
