The women athletes were
coached again this year by Prof.
Kay Yow. Coach Yow began the
year with a team of 14 athletes,
who were dedicated and worked
hard during their season of
volleyball. Coach Yow has
coached volleyball five years
now at Elon, and every year the
Elon record gets better. The
women ended their season this
year with a 17-4 record.
The next sport was basketball
which Kay Yow again coached.
Coach Yow kept a team this year
of 12 players, and again as with
the volleyball team, these
students gave their season of
basketball "all they had." They
played in the regional
tournament and took first place
and competed in the state
tournament held here at Elon and
came in third. The women
finished the season with a record
of 19-4.
Coach Yow and the women
athletes who participated are to
be congratulated for a season of
hard work and a job well done.
Tennis - A
Fun Sport
By Lanna Peavy
Tennis, anyone? One of the
most popular sports of today is
tennis, and one of the oldest
games we play. In his Chronicles
of Florence, Donate Velluti says
French knights introduced tenes
into Italy early in 1325. In France
the game has been called la
paiilma or la paiime, because the
ball was struck off the palm of
the hand in the 12th century. The
name tennis probably comes
from the French verb tenir. to
take or receive.
Tennis is a game that can be
played by almost everyone.
People of any age can get out on
the court and swing a tennis
racquet. Whether they can hit the
ball or not is a different story.
The game is about 75%
psychological, and 25% skill. Yet
it all depends upon the player. If
the player is a weekend
“Hacker," he seems to enjoy
"hacking" at the ball two days
out of the week. If the person is
an everyday player, he is wound
up in concentration and
perfecting his skill. The everyday
player takes the game very

and had the largest participation

held the team back throughout
the year, forcing two meets to be
cancelled. Coach Johnson
expects the team to be
competitive and to finish in the
top four teams at the conference
meet.
Outstanding sprinters for this
year's team were Randall
Shelby, Prince Deese and Harold
Carver. Shelby's 9.8 in the
100-yard dash tied a school
record. John Kincaid and Jeff
Benton excelled in the 880. and
Mike Ingram performed well in
the mile with his best time of
4:36. Tray Jewell ran the
three-mile with David Dodd. Rob
Black and Wayne Bumgardner
running the high and
intermediate hurdles. Dodd had a
15.5 in the high hurdles. Elon's
440-relay team of Don
McLaughlin. Prince Deese.
Randall Shelby, and Harold
Carver enjoyed a good season,
with Stan Butler and Ruffin
Grady also performing well in the
seriously, and he will pit his skill
against other everyday players.
More than the sheer enjoyment
of tennis, the game is great
exercise for those whose work
keeps them indoors. Calories can
be burnt off by the dozens during
just one hour of tennis. Many
people do not realize just how a
clutch.
Elon had a strong year in the
field events as well with Paul
Pope setting a school record with
a throw of 47 ft. 9 in. in the
shotput. Danny Patterson had a
45 ft. 3 in. heave in the shot. Shag
Johnson and Ron West did a
good job in the discus, and Don
McLaughlin and Earl Mclndoe
enjoyed good years in the broad
jump. Diffy Ross and Terry
Rhyne led the way in the triple
jump and Kevin Roberts and
David Shackleton performed
well as pole-vaulters. Jeff
MacKenzie. Ron West, and Mike
Hawkins hurled the javelin for
Elon this year. In the high jump.
Thomas Moore was undefeated

The most valuable player is
selected at the end of the year by
totaling all the points each
teammate has won for the team.
Harold Carver. David Dodd, or
Randall Shelby is expected to
win this award. Coach Clayton
Johnson is well pleased with the
whole team's effort this year,
and with the majority returning
next year. Elon should field
another fine track team.
day out on the courts can be fun
and good for their health. The
game can improve wind, build
muscles, improve coordination,
and. last but not least, provide an
afternoon of enjoyment.
Another aspect of the game
that should not be overlooked is
etiquette on the court. If a player
hits a bad forehand, that does not
mean he has to break his racquet
into pieces. Nor does this mean
he should shout profanity that
can be heard in Texas. A tennis
player should control his temper
and use good tennis etiquette.
On a beautiful day. there is
nothing better than to get out in
the sunshine and play a couple of
sets of tennis.

Elon College's baseball team is
preparing for tournament action
this week. The top four teams in
regular season action advance on
to the tourney. As of Saturday,
the Christians had a 13-8 overall
record and 6-5 conference slate.
Elon placed fourth behind
Pfeiffer last week.
Coach Osborne had several
overall comments about the
season. "We started slow and
then we had our ups and downs.
We are playing pretty good ball
now. The pitching has been good
all year. Doug Williams has been
hitting well." Doug Williams

The Carolinas Conference may
be about to see great change. The
Conference could come to an
end. This statement is backed up
by the evidence that Lenoir
Rhyne has officially dropped out
of the CC. Mars Hill is now
expected to drop out, and this
will leave the remaining schools
with only three football and six
basketball colleges in the
conference.
Athletic Director S.S. "Red"
Wilson says, “There are two
things we (Elon) can do. First,
form a new conference, or
second, go independent. We
need to do something very soon
to try to allign ourselves with
some schools of our size and
capabilities to form a new
conference. We should not go
independent, in my opinion. The
Majors and interested students
in the departments of business
administration, business
education, accounting,
economics, and secretarial
science gathered on April 24 to
induct academic honor students
into two honor societies.
Students were inducted into
Epsilon Beta Epsilon if they had
averages of 3.0 and majored in
accounting. BA. BE. or
economics; or Sigma Sigma

majors only.
Students inducted into Epsilon

Robert Swift. Janet Foster.
Beverly Parrot. Michele Dizio.

and Tony Mullins have knocked

Coach Bill Miller, head coach
for the squad, had some feelings
about the season, also. He said,
"If we could learn to hit the
curve ball, we would be in
business. We've got good
defense, good pitching, and
we've been hitting hard."

schools for the new conference
could include: Lenoir Rhyne.
Mars Hill. Elon, Gardner Webb,
Presbyterian, Newberry,
Carson-Newman, and possibly
Catawba. We already play these
schools in football, so there
would be no difference in travel
distances. In a new conference,
we would all be under the same
rules. We could, however, play
in an associate football
conference which would bring in
such schools as Campbell. We
could continue to play other
sports schedules against schools
close by."
The subject is still not settled
and can't be decided until the
presidents of the colleges get
some ideas together. The one
thing which has this split up was
the simple matter of finances for
scholarships.
