Elon Sprinters Race to Close Another Good Season Baseball Team Ends Season Tourney Time Is Here By Gary Spitler Spring Sports More Women Participate in Athletics By J.E. McGann The women athletes were coached again this year by Prof. Kay Yow. Coach Yow began the year with a team of 14 athletes, who were dedicated and worked hard during their season of volleyball. Coach Yow has coached volleyball five years now at Elon, and every year the Elon record gets better. The women ended their season this year with a 17-4 record. The next sport was basketball which Kay Yow again coached. Coach Yow kept a team this year of 12 players, and again as with the volleyball team, these students gave their season of basketball "all they had." They played in the regional tournament and took first place and competed in the state tournament held here at Elon and came in third. The women finished the season with a record of 19-4. Coach Yow and the women athletes who participated are to be congratulated for a season of hard work and a job well done. Tennis - A Fun Sport By Lanna Peavy Tennis, anyone? One of the most popular sports of today is tennis, and one of the oldest games we play. In his Chronicles of Florence, Donate Velluti says French knights introduced tenes into Italy early in 1325. In France the game has been called la paiilma or la paiime, because the ball was struck off the palm of the hand in the 12th century. The name tennis probably comes from the French verb tenir. to take or receive. Tennis is a game that can be played by almost everyone. People of any age can get out on the court and swing a tennis racquet. Whether they can hit the ball or not is a different story. The game is about 75% psychological, and 25% skill. Yet it all depends upon the player. If the player is a weekend “Hacker," he seems to enjoy "hacking" at the ball two days out of the week. If the person is an everyday player, he is wound up in concentration and perfecting his skill. The everyday player takes the game very By Bill Dawkins Elon's 1975 track team improved 100% over last season and had the largest participation ever known here, fed weather held the team back throughout the year, forcing two meets to be cancelled. Elon should field another fine track team. day out on the courts can be fun and good for their health. The game can improve wind, build muscles, improve coordination, and. last but not least, provide an afternoon of enjoyment. Another aspect of the game that should not be overlooked is etiquette on the court. If a player hits a bad forehand, that does not mean he has to break his racquet into pieces. Nor does this mean he should shout profanity that can be heard in Texas. A tennis player should control his temper and use good tennis etiquette. On a beautiful day. there is nothing better than to get out in the sunshine and play a couple of sets of tennis. HUFFINES TEXACO 584-8712 Elon College's baseball team is preparing for tournament action this week. The top four teams in regular season action advance on to the tourney. As of Saturday, the Christians had a 13-8 overall record and 6-5 conference slate. Elon placed fourth behind Pfeiffer last week. Coach Osborne had several overall comments about the season. Doug Williams By Gary Spitler The Carolinas Conference may be about to see great change. The Conference could come to an end. This statement is backed up by the evidence that Lenoir Rhyne has officially dropped out of the CC. Mars Hill is now expected to drop out, and this will leave the remaining schools with only three football and six basketball colleges in the conference. Athletic Director S.S. "Red" Wilson says, “There are two things we (Elon) can do. First, form a new conference, or second, go independent. We need to do something very soon to try to allign ourselves with some schools of our size and capabilities to form a new conference. We should not go independent, in my opinion.
