For the last two weeks there
have been rumors concerning
Elon's Athletic Department. This
interview is directed to Elon's
football program, coached by
"Red" Wilson. Many players
offered questions to be asked and
of them the following five were
taken to Coach Wilson to be
answered.
Q. — What philosophy do you
use in selecting your players?
A. — I believe in mass
participation. Always use as
many players as you possibly
can, depending of course on
tempo and uniforms.
Q- — Do you think that you
have an excellent player-coach
relationship?

The I97.‘> Elon College football
squad has recovered from their
slump to post a win over Mars
Hill 9 to 7. Guilford defeated the
Christians the week before 17-6.
Elon has now taken over first
place in the SAC-8, and will face
Bluefield State this coming
Saturday in a Homecoming and
Parents Weekend affair.
Runningback Willie
Washington scored on a 14-yard
run and Stan Curry kicked the
PAT to send Mars Hill ahead in
the second quarter. Elon's
offense and defense took over
though, and the gridders moved
the ball down the field.
Quarterback Martin Page scored
from the three-yard mark. Phil
Beeson kicked the PAT and

A. — Yes, my office is always
open, 1 am very concerned with
the attitudes of my players. 1
want them to feel free to come in
at anytime.
Q- — How much do you
depend on the assistant coaches
that you have and in what way do
you take their advice?
A. — Every coach is a part of
our team and should be allowed
to coach. 1 say with Harry
Truman, the buck stops at my
desk, and I have to take the
credit or blame.
Q. — Do you think that you
will stay with Elon indefinitely?
A. — 1 love Elon very much;
I'm a part of her, but if I am
offered a more lucrative
position, I would have to take it
for the lead. Jerry Alford made
the play of the game to score a
safety which put Elon into the
lead in the third quarter.

The fall edition of the Elon
baseball squad has been busy in
training with their new coach,
Bobby Jones. They have been
playing scrimmage games to
build experience into the team
along with accuracy. Two games
have been played thus far. The
batmen traveled to Guilford in a
last minute deal to play them and
lost 7-2. The following Tuesday,
the Elon sluggers came out
victorious 4-1 over Sandhills
College. Several scrimmage
contests are in the making for
this talented fall squad. Elon will
host High Point at 2:30 p.m.
today on the Elon field.
Some of the outstanding
returnees from last year's squad
are Fil Bondurant, Bill Devaney,
Charlie Gamble. Mike Harden,
Brian Harrison, Ronnie Johnson,
Steve Milligan, Skip Moore,
Craig Morris, Tony Mullins,
Gary Neugent, Randy
Robertson, Butch Shotwell, Bob
Stratton, David Vaughn, and
Doug Williams. Several other
players have transferred or are
still on the team after Coach
Jones cut his squad down from 58
to 31, such as Ed Adams from
into consideration.
Q. — Is it true that one of your
assistant coaches has threatened
to quit?
A. — I'm sure that you are
speaking of Coach Tolley, and 1
want to assure you that he is still
very much a part of my coaching
staff. It is true though, that he is
working on his doctorate and
wishes to further his education.
Coach Wilson reflected a very
positive attitude about the
coming season and projected a
most confident feeling about the
future of Elon's football
program. He also made it clear
that he Ipoks at each player as if
he were his own son, and even
then that he is not beyond
making mistakes.

Port Norris, New Jersey; Lou
Williams from Meadville,
Pennsylvania; and Frank
Williams from Louisburg
College.
In a talk with Coach Jones, 1
asked how he felt about the play
of his fall squad in the two
contests. "We looked better
today against Sandhills, and I am
very pleased with the fine three
innings of pitching from Lou
Williams and the other pitchers:
Craig Morris, Lee Baldwin, and
Danny Gonella along with Randy
Robertson who pitched at the
Guilford game. We have some
good freshmen, and 1 think they
will improve and be better as the
season approaches. Our defense
was better against Sandhills, and
if we have a weakness, it is in our j
batting. We had some mistakes
against Guilford which hurt us.
We had nine hits while Guilford
had ten."
Under the leadership of Coach
Jones it is expected that this
year's squad will play more night
games and more double hitters.
Plan now to attend the games.
