Page Four The Pendulum October 9,1975 Elon College Women Volleyball underway Fighting Christians to meet Bluefield State Saturday by Janie McGann The Elon College women s intercollegiate volleyball team, coached this season by Barbara Yarborough, has selected a team of thirteen players who should provide an exciting season. The team consists of returning upper classmtn Teddy Ireland, last season's MVP, Becky Currin, Joyce Daniels, Beth Batey, Tina Ireland, Pam Clark and Susie Edwards. New players are Pam Singleton, Sandra Lawlrey, Toni Nevaro, Carolyn Smith and Lee Cummings. The women started on by Gary Spitler Jack O. White's “Showband of the Carolinas" will turn you on again this week as they perform in a Bicentennial show to kick off the Bicentennial celebration on the Elon College campus. ‘‘America 76" and “Look Up Jack O. White, bandmaster at Eion, has a favorite tune which is familiar to all liis band members —“One more time, band!” PORTS HORTS — Coach Bill Miller will hold baksetball try-outs at 3 p.m. ’ October 6-10 in Alumni Gym. — Intramural officials are needed. If you are interested, contact Mike Murphy at 227-4903 or check by the intramural office from 2:30 to 9 p.m. All officials are paid. — There will be a table tennis tournament in which all interested students should sign up on the bulletin board on 2nd floor of the student center before September 20 with a scrimmage held at Boone, N.C., where they met seven other teams but competed against only four. The ladies returned to Elon with a record of four wins and three losses. The women have a full schedule to meet this season and with the support of the student body and local sports fans to cheer the girls on, the season should be one of many wins. Come to the tri-match which will be held on October 14 at 7 p.m. in the Elon gym when the girls host both North Carolina Central and Methodist colleges. America" will be two of the many tunes the band has in store. "When The Saints Go Marching In" will feature Jack O. White on trumpet and Dr. David Bragg on sax, and is a salute to the parents during this "Big Three" weekend. The homecoming queen will be crowned, and appropriate music will create a mood of happiness and excitement as the Homecoming Queen of 1975-76 is honored. Get into the groove and don't miss out on one of the longest halftime shows to be presented at Elon. The band will celebrate this Saturday as the Elon gridders face Bluefield State in Burlington Memorial Stadium. Friday, October 10. . — There will be an outing club formed this spring. Also inquire here if you are interested in cave exploration. by George McNeill For the last two weeks there have been rumors concerning Elon's Athletic Department. This interview is directed to Elon's football program, coached by "Red" Wilson. Many players offered questions to be asked and of them the following five were taken to Coach Wilson to be answered. Q. — What philosophy do you use in selecting your players? A. — I believe in mass participation. Always use as many players as you possibly can, depending of course on tempo and uniforms. Q- — Do you think that you have an excellent player-coach relationship? by Gary Spitler The I97.‘> Elon College football squad has recovered from their slump to post a win over Mars Hill 9 to 7. Guilford defeated the Christians the week before 17-6. Elon has now taken over first place in the SAC-8, and will face Bluefield State this coming Saturday in a Homecoming and Parents Weekend affair. Runningback Willie Washington scored on a 14-yard run and Stan Curry kicked the PAT to send Mars Hill ahead in the second quarter. Elon's offense and defense took over though, and the gridders moved the ball down the field. Quarterback Martin Page scored from the three-yard mark. Phil Beeson kicked the PAT and suddenly the teams were battling Elon intramural program on the road agmn by Janie McGann The intramural program for women is getting underway. The president of the Women's Athletic Association, Kathy Bowman, has been working hard making plans and coming up with new ideas. Both Chrystal Cattlett and Janice Carter have also been working hard to set up teams for ootball which will be the first port played this year. All girls who have signed up on lie roster for their dorm team are now eligible to participate in any ntramural sport. Q- — How much do you depend on the assistant coaches that you have and in what way do you take their advice? A. — Every coach is a part of our team and should be allowed to coach. 1 say with Harry Truman, the buck stops at my desk, and I have to take the credit or blame. Q. — Do you think that you will stay with Elon indefinitely? A. — 1 love Elon very much; I'm a part of her, but if I am offered a more lucrative position, I would have to take it for the lead. Jerry Alford made the play of the game to score a safety which put Elon into the lead in the third quarter. Fumbles, interceptions and strong defenses kept both teams from scoring any more points, which left the contest in Elon's by Gary Spitler The fall edition of the Elon baseball squad has been busy in training with their new coach, Bobby Jones. They have been playing scrimmage games to build experience into the team along with accuracy. Two games have been played thus far. The batmen traveled to Guilford in a last minute deal to play them and lost 7-2. The following Tuesday, the Elon sluggers came out victorious 4-1 over Sandhills College. Several scrimmage contests are in the making for this talented fall squad. Elon will host High Point at 2:30 p.m. today on the Elon field. Some of the outstanding returnees from last year's squad are Fil Bondurant, Bill Devaney, Charlie Gamble. Mike Harden, Brian Harrison, Ronnie Johnson, Steve Milligan, Skip Moore, Craig Morris, Tony Mullins, Gary Neugent, Randy Robertson, Butch Shotwell, Bob Stratton, David Vaughn, and Doug Williams. Several other players have transferred or are still on the team after Coach Jones cut his squad down from 58 to 31, such as Ed Adams from into consideration. Q. — Is it true that one of your assistant coaches has threatened to quit? A. — I'm sure that you are speaking of Coach Tolley, and 1 want to assure you that he is still very much a part of my coaching staff. It is true though, that he is working on his doctorate and wishes to further his education. Coach Wilson reflected a very positive attitude about the coming season and projected a most confident feeling about the future of Elon's football program. He also made it clear that he Ipoks at each player as if he were his own son, and even then that he is not beyond making mistakes. favor 9-7. This Saturday the gridders face Bluefield State which should prove to be an exciting contest Kickoff time is 2 p.m. in Buriington s Memorial Stadium. Arrive early to avoid heavy traffic! Port Norris, New Jersey; Lou Williams from Meadville, Pennsylvania; and Frank Williams from Louisburg College. In a talk with Coach Jones, 1 asked how he felt about the play of his fall squad in the two contests. "We looked better today against Sandhills, and I am very pleased with the fine three innings of pitching from Lou Williams and the other pitchers: Craig Morris, Lee Baldwin, and Danny Gonella along with Randy Robertson who pitched at the Guilford game. We have some good freshmen, and 1 think they will improve and be better as the season approaches. Our defense was better against Sandhills, and if we have a weakness, it is in our j batting. We had some mistakes against Guilford which hurt us. We had nine hits while Guilford had ten." Under the leadership of Coach Jones it is expected that this year's squad will play more night games and more double hitters. Plan now to attend the games.
