This week's Elon College vs.
New uerry College football
game will be a good balanced
lootball game which all honored
guests and parents should
really enjoy. Elon finished
17-10 over Gardner-Webb last
week while boosting their
record to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in
the SAC-8. Newberry holds on
to third in the SAC-8 while
Elon is first. Elon is rated =2 in
the NAIA I National
Association of Intercollegiate
Athletics i this week as well as
leading the District 26 stats.
Elon and Newberr>- have met
31 times and this will be
meeting -32. Elon has won 19
times with their last win
Elon College
vs.
Newberry College
- a pregame outlook
coming in 1974 by the score of
34-19. Newberry has won 11
times with their last victory-
being a slim 18-17 decision in
1975.
The Indians have 30 linemen
returning and 14 starters back
to make their solid team run.
Fred Herren. coach at
Newberry, holds a career
coaching record at New berry of
43-45-3. Eion's Wilson holds a
69-33-2 slate.
Except for Neal Smith, the
Indians have their defensive
team back. However, Elon is
also heavily loaded in defense.
So, Elon will be going for win
= 9 Saturday at Burlington
Memorial Stadium at 2 p.m. Be
sure to arrive early to avoid
heavy traffic.

dashed 37 yards for Eion's first
TD. Mitch Rippy's PAT was
good and the Christians led 7-0
with 11:50 to go in the first
period.
With no other scoring it was
still anyone's game at the half.
Elon had a 34-yard field goal
blocked with eight seconds on
the clock till the half, so the
halftime score of 7-0 was a slim
lead for such a big game for the
Christians. The defensive unit
for the Christians was hot. They
held the Indians on the
one-yard line three downs,
refusing the Indians a TD.
But the second half was not a
re-run. The Christiarw scored 13
points in the third stanza.
Eion's Ferguson returned a
blocked punt return 53 yards for
Eion's next TD. The kick failed
and the Christians led 13-0.
Catawba failed to pick up the
first down on their next
possession and Elon got their
hands on the ball once again.
Eion's Deese breezed down the
field on a pilch out from derCola
on the next play to set up Elon
on the four-yard line with first
and goal. Deese gained one yard
on the next play and then
carried the ball in with 9:50 to
go in the third period to stretch
the Elon lead to 20-0 after
Rippy's PAT was good
Eion's defensive unit then
poured it on when Catawba got
their next possession. The Tiibe
failed to move the ball and was
forced to punt. No other scoring
took the "battle of the
undefeated " into the final
period.
But it was not a Catawba
fourth. Elon had a 35-yard field
goal fail, but then after that,
Catawba fumbled to give the
Christians the ball once again.
Eion's McMillan then dashed in
for the next score from the one.
A two-point conversion was
good by derCola to Deese pass,
and Elon led 28-0.
But that was not the end of
the Christian's attack on the
Tribe. A tight defensive unit
shut out the Indians for the first
time of the season. And the
offense was not finished either.
Eion's Kenny Washington
carried the ball into the endzone
from four yards out for the
Christians' final TD. Rippy's
PAT was good and with 12
seconds on the clock, Catawba
could only nm a few plays. So,
the "game of the year" ended
with the Christians bombing
the Indians 35-0.
Elon traveled to
Gardner-Webb this past week to
battle another one of the
leading SAC-8 teams in a game
which ended up being played
under a steady downpour of
rain. However, the Christians
salvaged a dry 17-10 victory to
boost the undefeated winning
mark to eight wins this season
sigainst no losses.
The first quarter found both
Eion's Golden Girls
Volleyball team has found the
going rough the past two weeks
losing four games, two of these
defeats coming at the hands of
High Point College. However,
despite these four defeats, Elon
still holds a good 17-7 record
The team traveled to Rock
Hill, S.C. on Tuesday, claiming
two wins over Francis Marion
and Winthrop. On Thursday
Elon played a fine and exciting
match in Greenville, defeating
a good East Carolina team
13-15, 15-18, and 16-14. The
team then rolled over
UNC-Wilmington 15-11 and
15-7.
Elon never seemed to put it
all together at the double
elimination Carolina's
Conference Tournament held at
High Point Saturday. Elon
downed Guilford in two games;
16-14 and 15-11. In the next
match against High Point, the
team played a good first game,
jumping out to a 6-1 lead, but
finally fell to defeat 10-15. The
second game was all High
Point, blanking the Golden
Girls 0-15. In the third match,
Elon again met the fired up
squads battling in the rain and
Elon coming out with a 3-0 lead
at the end of the first period A
31-yard field goal made by
Eion's Mitch Rippy was the only
score between the two clubs.
The second quarter was
different from the first. GW's
kicker, Mike Cox, booted a
27-yard field goal to get the
Bulldogs on the board in the
second stanza. But that was not
the eiid of the action for Elon.
Eion’s quarterback Nick
derCola connected to Jimmy
Davis with a 29-yard pass to set
up the first TD of the game. The
kick was blocked and the two
wet teams went into the
dressing rooms with Elon out in
front by the slim margin of 9-3.
The second half opened and it
by Lee Cummings
Quakers from Guilford who
downed the girls m three close
games; 15-7,15-5, and 13-5.
This left the team with a
disappointing third place finish
behind Guilford and
tournament champions High
Point. Elon did leave High
Point on a bright note, as senior
Joyce Daniel was selected to the
All Carolina s Conference ream.
Joyce displayed fine court play,
hustle, and determination as
she has done all year for the
team,
Tuesday night Elon had their
hands full with both High Point
and N.C.State in the last home
game of the season. The team
played one of the best matches
of the year against an
inexperienced, but scrappy
Wolfpack six, but the breaks
just did not fall the Golden
Girls' way, Elon losing 11-15
and 12-15. Several times Elon
had what looked like easy
points, but State would
miraculously return the ball
over the net. The next match
saw High Point dominate by
winning 9-15,4-15.
The team traveled to
Louisburg Oct. 28 to battle
was still raining. Eion's
defensive standout Ricky
Locklear, this week's player of
the week, recovered a
Gardner-Webb fumble in the
en^ne to score Eion's second

Howard Ferguson was complete
and Elon led 17-3.
But that was not the end for

Obbie Todd returned an Elon

to score for the Bulldogs The
teams battled, and Elon came
out with a close 17-10 win.
It was the eighth win of the
season for Elon and the win
