Page 2 The Pendulum February 10,1977 Advertisers skip out We would like to apologize to all our readers who ordered watches advertised in our Dec. 9 issue. The company was apparently a fraud and left the country after placing ads in such reputable magazines as T.V. Guide and well known newspapers. People all over the country who ordered the watches lost money and so did the newspapers and magazines which ran the ads. The contract given to us has been turned over to the proper authorities and a complaint has been made to the Greensboro Better Business Bureau. An investigation is continuing, and we will report on any further developments. The Pendulum staff BCS sponsors Roots lecture The Black Cultural Society, an organization at Elon College designed to promote the awareness of black culture within the students is sponsoring its annual Black Culture Week this week. The society, which originated two years ago when a group of black students and the administrators decided that there should be an organization for the black people, and the Student Union Board is presenting tonight at 8:00 in Long Student Center lounge visiting professors to talk about the recent television series and book, Roots. The professors, James Gifford and Fred Hunt of the history department of Guilford college traced the history of Roots and will discuss it with interested students. The Black Culture Society is faced with many problems, two of which are lack of participation and money. Because the society is not regulated by the Student Government, it receives no financial aid from the SGA. Part of the money which is being used to bring these two visiting professors to Elon for everybody’s enjoyment was won at the Parents' Weekend Talent Show in which The Black Cultural Society won third place. Perhaps individual students can do little to aid the society with its financial situation, but students can help by giving support at meetings and especially tonight at the Roots lecture. The society holds meetings every Wednesday night at 7:30 and invites students of any race interested in Black culture to attend. 1976-77 Pendulum Policies 1. 'But I wasn’t ready to leave London when the Elon plane left—" Letters to the Editors... London Laurels Dear Editors, I would like to express my appreciation to all the people who helped make the winter term in England such a success. I think it was well worth the money and everything was handled in a professional mcuiner. Anyone who has ever considered taking the trip should seriously look into it because financially it would be impossible to match Elon’s program. Be forewarned though, it’s not quite the holiday you might be led to believe. It seems that some of our faculty members never heard the expression "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” because they kept us moving. We did, however, find ample time to play, and I feel good knowing that in some small way we helped stabilize the British economy by pouring our American dollars into a worthwhile cause — the English pub. Combining the nightlife with the well co-ordinated tours, we got the best of both worlds. So once again, thanks. It was a perfect way to highlight four years at Elon. Doug Durante Red says thanks Dear Editors: I wish to express my sincere appreciation for the fantastic support the Elon College student body gave the 1976 "Fighting Christians.” It meant very much to players, coaches, cheerleaders, team managers, etc. and actually it was as if the 12th m£in was on the playing field at all times. I also want to say to the student body a heartfelt "thank you” for the signatures you presented the team prior to the NAIA playoff game with Central Arkansas. This was the first time I can remember that this was done. All of us (football team and coaches) are truly sorry we could not have come out on top. You are the greatest and everyone closely associated with Elon athletics is extremely proud to have you as loyal supporters of our teams. Coach Red Wilson Head Football Coach Welcome Back Dear Students; I welcome you back from wherever you’ve been since Christmas and hope that you have been revived by the Winter Term. This semester is shaping up to be a fine four months. Some of the activities and projects that the Student Government is working on are: (1) Sponsoring a trip to the Virgin Islands during spring break. (Info in SGA office); (2) reorganizing the legislative body of the SGA, the Senate, into a more representative body via representation by area; (3) purchasing a Isirge screen TV for use in the Student Center, (4) two concerts with Jimmy Buffet, Feb. 26, and possibly Greg Allman, spring weekend; (5) we are polling students concerning an extension of intervisitation from 12 noon to 12 midnight on Friday and Saturday nights. This proposal will be taken to the Board of Trustees during the spring meeting, (6) the SGA is trying to help the administration make the transition for the students moving from the Hook-Brannock-Barney complex to Sloan, and vice-versa, easier, (7) we will al«o send a representative to the National Student Association National Lobbying Conference in March. This conference is to acquaint students with their National Student Lobby. Our other activities will, of course, continue. I am happy to report that the SGA sponsored outing course was a big success, and I hope it will be continued. The people who took it had a good time, even if the lake they went canoeing on was frozen. I look back on the first half of the year and see much I should have done, but I feel proud of what we have accomplished. Please support us; we exist only to serve. Sam Moore SGA President nc-pirg offers refunds to elon students who wish to withdraw Tues. & Thurs.: 10 AM to 12 NOON Feb. 15-March 10 103 Long Student Center Sam Moore has asked us to run a copy of the letter he sent to the Washington Post, Greensboro Daily News and the Burlington Times: Editors: I have a problem in which your research resources could be of invaluable aid. I am the Student Government President of Elon College in Alamance County, North Carolina. Our problem is that we have no full time black faculty or administrators. I have, of course, talked to the people in authority concerning this matter; but they say that black administrators and faculty are in big demand and expensive. They also have on record several attempts to hire Third-world people who turned down employment because of money, etc. This makes nailing them down on discriminatory hiring practices impossible, but it is the general feeling among students and professors that the College is not pressing the issue. My feeling is that black men and women must be hired to round out Elon’s students’ perspective. Many people getting an education here now will have to work under black men and women in today's integrated business world. How will they cope if the myth of black inferiority is perpetuated by the system that is teaching them? The College says it is trying; I think the Student Government should force them to try harder. To do this, we need a clearinghouse of black persons available and an explanation of the Civil Rights Laws concerning this issue. Please help us. Thank you, Samuel Bascom Moore Elon College Student Government Association Buffet to appear Feb. 26 The Elon SGA will feature Jimmy Buffet in concert on Feb. 26 at 8 p.m. in Alumni Gym. Advance tickets with Elon ID’s are $3 and all others $6. Tickets the day of the show will be $6. Tickets may be purchased at the Campus Shop.
