Sigma Pi, received its national charter on April 23. Sigma Pi’s first meeting on the Elon campus was held on March 2, 1976. Present at that meeting were the founding fathers, with Ricky Marchman, president, and Terry Ryan, vice president Throu^ the hard work of the 18 founding fathers and the pledge classes of last fall and tjiia spring, the Elon College Colony becaune the Epsilon Theta chapter of Sigma Pi. The chapter now totals 40 members with elected officers for this year Brent Whitener, president; Rusty Smith, vice president; Chris Martin, treasurer; Wally Vinson, secretary; Grayson Whitt, sargeant at arms; and EVnie Byrider, historian. Annual college awards day recognizes many for achievement by Dianne Silcox The Elon College Annual Awards Day, held on May 3, honored 22 students and one retiring faculty member. The awards day is sponsored by the Elon College Leadership Honor Society. Presiding was Sherman Alfors, president of the Leadership Honor Society. The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Awards are given to one man and one woman student and one non-student TTus award is in recognition of fine spiritual qualities demonstrated in daily living. Winners were Fraun D. Talley, Robert W. Black and Prof. John S. Graves. The American Association of University Women Award is given to a senior woman for her excellence in scholarship and leadership. The recipient was Janet L. Thompson. The Basni^t Award, given t» an outstanding Bible student, was presented to Leonard E. Stadler. The Bxirlington South Boston Ministeriiun Award is given to a student possessing dl-round excellence and promise. TTie recipient of this award was Larry L. Blackwell. Delta Kappa Gamma honors an outstanding prospective teacher, a native of Alamance C!!ounty completing the jimior year. The recipient was JoAnna V. (jOss. The English Scholarship Award is given to a rising senior English mtgor who shows superior qualities of scholarship and character. Rebecca A. Sharpe won this award. The W.C. Harper String Instrument Scholarship Award goes to a string instnmient major who has made outstanding progress in his or her study. The recipient was Jennifer H. Batson. A P.E. Greek Week is big success xvith lots of fun by Doug Durante Last Thursday night’s skits lHt)ught to a close a week of partying, work and competition for the fraternities and sororities of Elon. The 1977 Greek Week festivities were perhaps the most successful in its three-year history, from the chuffiing to the tugging and everythi^ in-between. Local media reporters from Burlington and Greensboro were on hand to cover the boat race, track day, and other activities that highlighted the week. Monday’s beer blast got „ ) I , - everything off to a rocking start .. I FVaun Talley, Robert Wack, John Gray«», passed down the Award winners at last week’s CoU^ ^ JoAnna Goss. Other than looking out of place, they let the party continue. TTie beer flowed freely and a rou^ headcount revealed that about 800 students attended this function and over 35 kegs were consumed. The rest of the week centered around athletic competition ^ games of fun and skill. Thursday’s skits highli^ted the week and several acts deserve mention, among them TKE’s "Hee Haw”, Sigma Pi’s "Waltons”, Kappa Psi’s "Gong Sau)w” and Sig Ep’s Toni^t Show with Kirtqr Carson.” The sororities did themselves ptXNid also, with all three acts i^eaaing the crowd of more than 200. Final tallies proclaimed TKE and Sigma Sigma Sigma GreA Week champions ol 1977.
