Dorm fire damages room Public meeting to hear candidates by Kemp Liles & John Atkinson Amid the overall exuberance of last Thursday night’s con cert was the hint of tragedy which was brought to three Elon students when their room was damaged by a matrass fire. The fire which was contained in one third floor room of Virginia Dormitory, unoccu pied at the time, was the result ot an improperly extinguished cigarette and caused $4000 to $5000 damage to the room and contents. Chief Bill Hetzel cited the major problem in fighting the fire as cars blocking the fire lanes. According to Hetzel these cars were those of out-of- town visitors here for the concert. Wreckers from local gas sta tions, according to Hetzel, started lowing cars away from the fire lanes at the college about 8 p.m., “prior to the fire in the dormitory.” A total of 34 firemen and three pumpers responded to the call and the only injury reported was one fireman with a burned hand. The burn was caused when he grabbed the mattress and threw it out of the third story window. The students' room received considerable damage, but the rest of the dorm was not seriously damaged. Virginia dorm is joined to old West dorm and the fir^e could have spread quickly had the fire de partment not responded in such a short time. Hetzel said, “It took only a few minutes to pul out the blazing mattress," but the clean up procedures that fol low every fire look an hour to complete. For the first time in many years, incumbent candidates for mayor and aldermen of Elon College are being chal lenged at the polls on Nov. 8. Clyde L. Fields, Sr., as sociate minister of the United Church of Christ, Southern Conference, and prime mover behind the Bicentennial com mittee work and beautification of the town, is challenging the mayor, T.L. Smith, who is running for a third term. Sid Norton, president of Norton-Russ Automotive Co., Burlington, and nine-year resi dent, is running for a place on the town board of aldermen. Mrs. Nell Snyder, wife of the executive director of the Elon’s Children’s home and active in ch'jrch and parent-teacher work, Is also running for alderman. They challenge in cumbents M.E. Campbell, who has served 11 years on the board, and Robert Olsen, Jr.. who is seeking his second term. Members who have two additional years on their four- year terms as aldermen are Ms, Shirley White, Dwight Hall, and D.D. Atkinson. A town meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3, at the Elon College Elementary School, will allow all candi dates to appear and to answer questions on issues and plans. Sponsored by the county-wide Junior Chamber of Commerce and the League of Women Voters, the meeting will allow candidates one question from the League to be answered in three minutes (this is League policy) and then all relevant questions from the audience. Another meeting, open to the public, has been called for Tuesday, Nov. 1, in the parish house of the Community Church, The chairman will be Dr. Mallary Masters, from the Romance languages depart ment at UNC-CH and a resi dent of Elon College. He has asked candidates to come and to answer questions. Mayor Smith says that he “does not know" if he will attend the town meeting on Nov. 3 in the elementary school. He says that he “prob ably will" attend the meeting m the parish house on Nov. 1. Mayor Smith, who has served two two-year terms as mayor and has been on the board two additional years, was born and raised here and returned to Elon College in 1939, He is in charge of parcel post shipping at Carolina Biological Supply Co. Smith is asking for re- election on the basis that his terms “speak for themselves," He lists the completed water lines, the elevated water tank. and the Gunn Creek sewer as accomplishments and looks forward to a new town hall on the property beingbought from the college across from the post office as well as a new recreation program M.E. Campbell retired 12 years ago from Western Elec tric. He was appointed by Mayor Smith as mayor pro tem and has come to be con sidered the expert on zoning in the town. He heads a commit tee to revise the 1968 zoning ordinance, but says he will not do any more until the court decides if the zoning ordinance is legal. This decision will come out ol the suit the present board has brought against Elon College with respect to certain fraternity houses in town. This case is said to be costing the town $10,000, set aside for the first year, for two aitorneys’ fees at $50 an hour each on average. Mr. Olsen, merchandising manager at Sears, Holly Hill, and resident of Elon College for five years, says that he wishes to be reelected because “the last three years have been challenging, uplifting, and 1 simply want to continue." Radio Drama Planned by Dan Doby A weekly dramatic prograt^ will be presented on Elon’s new radio station WSOE. Everyone interested in radio drama is urged to participate. by Dan Doby Hey, did ya hear the news? There's good rockin' tonight. Well, maybe not tonight, but there was a train load of good rockin’ last Thursday night when Kenny Loggins and Dave Mason barnstormed the Elon campus. By 8 p m, the Elon gym was swoilen to the rafters with students, locals, and out-of- towners, 99 percent of whom had their blue suede shoes on. The other one percent was lacing theirs up as Mason bounded on stage at 8:15. And Elon greeted him with thunder, Tm proud to say. The mild hysteria that had been running through the crowd like a live wire exploded into war cries and shrill whistles as Mr. Mason opened his set with an old song “World in Changes,” from his first album “Only You Know and I Know.” Mason accom panied himself on acoustic guitar. On his next number, “You Shouldn't Have Took More Than You Gave," he was joined by Jerry Williams on guitar and Mark Stein (Wild- man) on keyboard. The rich harmonies fiowed between the keyboard and guitar as Mason scolded his ex-lover in a strong blues-drawl. There was good acoustic guitar on the third song, “Maybe,” and the au dience provided the back beat for the fourth sons. "Gave you A Reason" by clapping along with the rhythm of the key board. Mason’s fifth song was his classic “Sad and Deep as You." The crowd settled in and let Mr. Mason work hi\ magic with this sad lo\e song lo a departed lover.
