Once and for all, let’s get everything concerning the hassles of the coming election out in the open. It has been the argument of many students that because of poor organization on the part of the elections board, many students have failed to comply with the ever ch sing filing deadline. Rathi-r than take the blame of being an irresponsible student, it is only human that the blame be shifted to the elections board One of the cjualifications of a responsible student is to take the initiative to find out things rather than to wait for it to be handed to you on a silver platter. Life just isn’t like this. Many students have acted irresponsibly in the case of elections. Few have taken the initiative and many have waited for their silver platters. Extending the deadline for filing candidacies is not the result of lack of organization on the part of the election board but to allow them more time to literally recruit candidates for the vacancies. If this hadn’t been done, a second election to fill these vacancie. would have been necessai ', - - thus causing unnecessary w .ik for the election board. Students aren't a” to blame in this case. Had the newly passed bill to change election procedures had more exposure to the studenti ;my would have seen how simple it was and this would have eli. nated the bureaucratic red tape image. Pul'licity is ai. (her gripe of the students about the elec tions boara. Last-minute publicity and constantly changing the filing deadline !ias kept many students puzzled. If the small number of candid->''-s filing was anticipated, an all out campaign on the , art of the elections board to attract candidates was nece ary. Candidate recruitment is nearing an end. In one way or an other we will have representatives whether it be by election or by appointment. Who’s to blame and whai can be done to prevent future dilemmas is lodged in the minds of many con cerned. The title of a Shakespearean play literally sums it all up—“Much a-do about Nothing.” Vote April 18-19 for SGA officers. Vote April 25-26 for class officers and senators. Greek week Besides spring weekend, the most talked about entertainment on campus is Greek Week. Monday, April 17 begins the celebration of Greek Week 1978. Greeks on the ELon College campus comprise one of the most viable and active student organizations. The annual event provides entertainment for all walks of student life, the athletic type, the comic, and the partying type. Greek Week also serves as a week of advertising. It is at this time that many future pledges make their final decision on which fraternity or sorority to join. Greek Week, though it appears to be a week of competition, IS a week of togetherness and unity. It is a time when many come together to perform as one. It is also a time when many learn to accept their wins with their defeats, thus learning good sportsmanship. Partying is probably the most sought after event during this week. This is, believe it or not, one of, if not the most, unifying of the events. Finally, Greek Week is one of two times when Elon students come together for one major cause — entertainment. Letters to the editor To M.S. Terious An open (and signed, lo andbehold!) letter to the in comparable and debonair M.S. Terious. After reading the unsigned letter in last week’s letter section penned by the anony mous M.S. Terious, in which the nameless, faceless author tore Becky Sharpe’s and my humor to shreds (along with my roommate’s Dave Gerni’s recent additions), my first reaction was “who is this cowardly personage who hath neither name or gender? and how dare it write this against Becky and Dave and me?” But, after regaining my composure, 1 re-read the letter and found it very well written in many ways. The writer obviously passed English 101 (no grammatical errors) and must have had a Roget’s Thesaurus at its side while penning this awesome piece of literature. The pure majesty of the sow’s pun on Flakey Furd (Flakey Turd) left me trembl ing with a writer’s envy. And the cliche “write my way out of a wet crossword puzzle. . .” In appreciation Dear Pendulum Editor; This is a letter to echo the sentiments of a letter received in the SGA office on Monday from Leona B. Updyke. The letter expressed ap preciation to Tim Moore, and the committee for one of the best spring weekends ever. She commented that it was well planned, well executed and enjoyable. I would like to add my thanks to Tim, and especially to Steve Eanes for an out standing job. The purpose of spring week end is to offer the students a change of pace and an enjoy able time. But more import antly, to keep people here on the weekends. By just noticing the number of cars in the parking lots this weekend, the goal of spring weekend was accomplished. Once again thanks for your hard work. It was a hell of a weekend. •An appreciative student Ye Gods! Sheer poetry! As for its personal challenge to me: “Apparently Dan Doby has never heard the saying “Brevity is the soul of wit,” I answer with another time- proven saying popular in these parts — “Stick it where the sun don’t shine.” No, actually, I was pleased to see some reaction to our efforts to give the students something to read besides the SGA news, M.S. Terious. Keep those cards and letters coming, you intellectual, you. And, if it ever occurs to you to talk to us instead of hiding behind your pen, why, just come on by the Pendulum office and leave a message where we can contact you. Let’s talk. Be sociable. Don’t be afraid. There’s no danger that “You’ll get your head busted,” as you stated in your letter, that’s not the way to work things. Mutual under standing is the best way. So, I’ll close by saying the entertainment staff is pleased to hear you are thinking and writing, M.S. Terious, and come on by if you feel like it. Maybe we can even find out your real name and your gender. Keep em coming. Dan Doby Dear Consulting Editor: We of the health service are often reminded of students’ dissatisfaction. You tell us we should have beds to isolate and care for all your needs when you become ill. True, this would be ideal, but the cost to the student would be greatly increased. There are few exceptions to the fact that most illness can be treated successfully on an out patient basis. For those more serious problems, we have two well-equipped hospitals and com. p. 6 More of Moore Since I came to Elon as a freshman four years ago, I have experienced many a week end on campus. I can re member the big weekends when people stayed and the slow weekends when I was the only person on my hall. But of all the weekends 1 can remem ber at Elon, I will have to say that this year’s Spring Week end was definitely the best. 1 would like to take this space to publicly thank those people who made it work. If you see these people and you enjoyed the weekend, then please take the time to tell them so. First, Bob Henritze. He was the man who was responsible for all the musical entertainment we enjoyed this weekend. His job is not an easy one and he has caught more than his deserved share of flack from everyone, including myself, over the past few weeks about the bands we had on campus this weekend. Bob spent many hours of his time and at times went above and beyond his call of duty on his job as entertainment chair man. Incidentally, Bob re ceived no pay for his job as chairman. Next comes Steve Eanes. Tim Moore Steve was the chairman of the Spring Weekend committee and was the major planner and instigator of all the events during the weekend. Steve was my right hand man and was most helpful in all stages of our best Spring Weekend ever. For all those people who worked on the labor pool and behind the scenes, thanks. We couldn’t have done it without you. Next week the SGA elections will take place on campus. By now the candidates have filed and the election campaigning will have started.
