Page 2 The Pendulum Wife Pntiittlum Bryant M. Colson Editor Photographer Robert Wicker IJSSA Boulder, Colorado, was tlie site of the 1978 Nation^ Student Government Association’s 31st convention. The mairi topic of the convention was the merging of the National, Student Association and the National Student Lobby. These two organizations represent and lobby for students m both social and educational aspects of student life. A question of primary concern in the Boulder convention was should the newly merged organization, United States Students Association (USSA), support strictly social aspects of student life or strictly educational aspects. This question brought about hours of debate on the plenary floor. Intense discussions and heated arguments resulted from the question. Many students argued the point that several of the JJSSA boycotts were against their states’ interest for example, the USSA boycott of J.P. Stevens. How could a student from the South boycott a company that plays an important part in one’s state economy. How can a student boycott a comply that has probably employed many generations of his family. The same holds true with USSA’s boycott of Coor’s After much discussion, the vote decided for USSA s participation in both social and educational aspects of student life. j It was the result of debates such as these that caused the branching off of one student organization, NSA, into two national groups: NSA and NSL. Moves, such as these seem unnecessary when several years later the organizations merge and start all over again. People get the government they deserve and so do students. Delegates make mark in Colorado The beautiful campus of the University of Colorado at Boulder was the site of the thirty-first meeting of the Na tional Student Association. There seemed to be a certain uniqueness about this meeting in that it didn’t just include National Student Association members but also National Student Lobby members. This meeting of the minds of the nation’s two most active stu dent organizations met with one set goal, “Merger on the Mountains.” After months of collabora tion the organizations con cluded that it would be in the best interest of all involved if the two organizations merged. The week’s agenda included several workshops, merger PRODUCTION STAFF Craig Harris Maggie O’Connell Jeannie Hairston Mary Ellen PriesUey Layout Pasteup Circulation Manager Adviser Published by Communications Media Board of EJon College in conjuncUon with the Student Government Association. Saturday, August 5, marked the beginning of the convention as delegates gath ered to hear keynote speaker Daniel Ellsberg, whose in volvement with the infamous “Pentagon Papers” earned him national recognition. Ellsberg spoke on everything from his little children, to the Nixon strategy as stated in his memoirs (Do anything, but avoid losing war). The merger vote was taken Monday, August 7, and was passed by both organizations by overwhleming majorities. The organization is now known as USSA, the United States Student Association. The Elon delegation to the convention included SGA President Robin Moser, Vice- President Annette Metcalf, Treasurer Lee Berryman, Pen dulum Circulation Manager Jeannie Hairston, sophomore class President Ken Whitley, and Pendulum Editor Bryant Colson. Elon’s contribution to the Atlantic region was Miss Hairston’s election as alter nate to the Congressional Steering Committee, a posi tion which Mr. Colson ac quired last year in Houston. Mr. Colson made an unsuc cessful bid for an alternate position on the Supervisory Board as did Mr. Whitley for a Congressional Steering Committee seat. SUff meeting Mon. 3 p.m. Life at the big E has once again moved into the “fast lane.” While our football players prepare themselves for our first home game (best of luck guys!) with rival Eliza beth City State, we in the SGA are psyching ourselves for the approaching academic year. Be assured that we realize Elon’s second annual “Wel come Back or Welcome to Concert” is due, and on Saturday, Sept. 16, the SGA will deliver. Elon’s Major At traction (via Bob Henritze) will produce a night of beach music featuring “Janice” and “Fat Ammons Band.” Bob Henritze has worked hard to bring quality entertainment to Elon students for the past year. Bob’s success is evident with one glance at the audi tor’s report which shows an increase in activity level of 600% in the SGA in the 1977-78 year. Mark your calendars for a red-letter VP date on Sunday 1st when Major Attractions will once again deliver “a night to remember” featuring Darryl Hall and John Oates._ Students from Elon have ex pressed a desire to hear “their kind of music,” and 1 feel this concert should more than satisfy the masses. On the more serious side of student life, we plan to con tinue offering some much- needed student services. Last year the SGA hired Ms. Con stance Carraway to provide legal advice on key student issues. 1 plan to continue this productive service. In closing, one of my key concerns for this year involves effective organization in the SGA. For this reason cabinet meetings will be scheduled and maintained throughout the year. To truly represent the concensus among students at Elon 1 will be able to hear from all the major areas of student life.
