Colson Editor Craig Harris News Mitor prttltttiitin (jraysoB Whitt Mike Robinson Sports joy Hamilton Entertainment Editor A time for thanks As the fourth Thursday in November approaches rapidly, he true meaning of that day fades away just as fast. Thanksgiving, essentially a harvest festival, owes its origin to the Pilgrim Fathers. Despite a lean harvest in the summer of 1621, Governor Bradford decreed a day of Thanksgiving and rejoicing after the scanty crop had been gatliLiHd' in. The pilgrims had been faced with harsh winters, death, starvation and much more. At this point in their lives they had much to be thankful for—life itself. The seriousness of this day has been somewhat distorted by commercialization; however, religion tries to remind us of the true meaning. Historically the day itself has faced a few problems, that is, in the matter of dates. Way back in 1863 President Lincoln set Thursday, Aug. 6, as a day of Thanksgiving. From 1864-1939 the last Tliursday in November was proclaimed annually by the President as the day of national Thanksgiving. Thanks to the concern of President F.D. Roosevelt, in 1939-41, the date was moved up one week to leave more time between Thanksgiving and Christmas. In December, 1941, the fourth Thursday in November was officially designated as the date for Thanksgiving Day, a day that is highlighted for the gourmet cook by the preparation of the renowned Thanksgiving dinner; for the student, four days of rest; for the sports fan, the. Dallas/Washington football game; for the merchants, a headstart on Christmas: and for the kiddies,, a sneak preview of old Saint Nick. Whatever your category, take time to think about what makes this all possible. Happy Thanksgiving! Gun control strict business at Elon Circulation Manager Distribution Typist Adviser This week I would like to devote the space of my letter to the editor to state a grow ing problem on Elon’s cam pus — gun control. In section six of the campus code, page 38 in the student handbook, you will find “Possession of firearms or weapons on campus.” The Bike-a-thon today Dear Editor, Today’s bike-a-thon, spon sored by the Panhellenic Council, is being held in the student union from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The four sororities on campus are working together in support of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. This marks Panhellenic’s first , at tempt at a fund-raising pro ject. Several members of the Alpha Sigma Alpha, Phi Mu, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and Zeta Tau Alpha sororities will be riding the bikes in order to raise money for Cystic Fibro sis. Each participant has re ceived sponsors to pledge money for the number of miles they will be able to ride. The pledges will run anywhere from one penny to several dollars according to the miles ridden. Each sorority will have one faculty member riding for them. The sorority which earns the most money for C.F. will receive a plaque in recognition of their hard work. Don’t miss the fun and don’t forget to donate to this worthy cause. Kandy Arthur handbook clearly states the offense by dividing the clause into three key areas. First, possession of firearms or a weapon on campus whether openly or concealed, by definition includes but is not limited to: guns, rifles, pistols, powerful explosives, bowie knives, daggers, switch blades, knives, metallic knuckles, and any other weapon of any kind. It should be noted that one may be charged with the offense for possessing a weapon even if someone else discharges it with or without the owners consent. In simpler terms this implies that if you own a firearm and your roommate fires it without you even being present you will be held accountable by the appropri ate judicial heads. Next, the clause, includes the scope or range of the offense which encompasses the entire campus, including automobiles on campus. Any offenders are also in violation of North Carolina Law-GS 269.2. And finally the penalties for being found guilty of this include: first offense, suspen sion for one academic semes ter; second offense, perman ent separation from the col lege. I would like to empha size that knowledge of the campus code prior to receiv ing any disciplinary actions from the administrative judi cial council is infinitely more desirable than knowledge aft er you have committed the offense. Since this is a prime time for hunting, please rea lize that in practicing your markmanship you may well become the victim of a situa tion with undesirable conse quences. Robin Moser SGA President Robin Moser SGA President Pitch pennies for HOPE Dear Editor, Phi Mu Sorority is spon soring “Pitch your pennis for Hope” through Sunday at Holly Hill Mall in Burlington.
