However, this month is very vital to the diamonders be cause they play eight con ference games during the next fifteen games. At present, the Fightin’' Christians stand 1-3 in conference play. The leading hitters thus far for the diamonders are Mike Rushton, Gene Drumwright, Phil Baskerville and Paul Judy. Rushton, a junior col lege treuisfer from George C. Wallace College, is hitting .514 and leading the confer ence in that department. Drumwright is batting .407, Baskerville is batting. 378 and leading the conference with 3 triples and Judy is batting .303. Hughes Crisp leads the pitching corps with a 2-0 record and a 0.44 ERA. The Fightin’ Christians won three and lost one before going to Florida on the Spring Break. They split a doubleheader with Pembroke State and swept a double- header from UNC-Charlotte. Against pembroke State, Elon lost the first game by a score of 7-3 despite Gerald Furman’s round tripper, in the second game, sophomore Eric Smith pitched a no hitter to lend the Fightin’ Christians to a 3-0 win. In sweeping the double- header over UNC-Charlotte, Elon won the first game 8-4 2uid the second game 2-0. George Winfrey pitched 4V) innings of shutout ball in relief to gain the victory in the first game. Rushton and Judy each had three hits in teh game while Furman added his third homerun of the year. Hughes Crisp’s two-hitter provided the victory in the second game against UNC- Charlotte. Also, Phil Basker ville contributed a two out triple in the sixth inning scoring two runs. On the Florida spring break trip, the Fightin’ Chris tians tied one and lost two against the minor league play ers of the Cardinals and Phil Sports lies. Eion’s head coach, Dr. Bob McBee was pleased with his troops performance against the pros. This weekend the diamond ers will play home three times. Friday, at 3:00, the University of North Carolina comes in to play at Newsome Field. Last year the Tar Heels finished third in the nation. On Saturday and Sunday, North Carolina A&T and Guilford, respectively, will play doubleheaders at New- some Field. Special Olympics need volunteers by Caryn Van Pelt The Special Olympics for all handicapped and trainable mentally retarded children will be held on Friday, April 27. Sponsored jointly by the Burlington Jaycees and the Alamance Association for Re tarded Citizens, this event will be held. More than 200 children from an estimated 27 schools are expected to participate and Elon students are en couraged to volunteer their time and love. Alpha Sigma Alpha and Phi Mu sororities and Sigma Pi challenge all organizations to join in. Eric Smith Eric Smith is this week’s Pendulum PLAYER OF THE Week. A sophomore from Elon College, Smith pitched a no- hitter against Pembroke State on March 23. This wk only the tenth no- hitter in Elon baseball history. For his achievement. Smith was honored as conference and district player of the week. Danny follows David Tennis by Grayson Whitt Danny Ray Graham of Mr. Airy has signed a grant-in- aid to attend Elon College for 1979-80, announced golf coach Bill Morningstar. Brother of Elon All-American golfer David Graham, Danny Ray is a standout in golf and b£is- ketball at Mt. Airy high school. In basketball, Graham was All-Conference two years and Player of the Year this year, he’s also been an All-Amer ican in golf. Ladies lose 2 as men play today by Grayson Whitt The women’s tennis team lost their two matches the week before Spring Break. The women fell to Pfeiffer (7-2) and Guilford (8-1). Karen Wall and Andie Me- Sports shorts; baseball and tennis The Elon College baseball squad is currently 8-4 on the year. The Christians failed to win any victories in Florida during spring break. In Flori da Elon met stiff competition from the farm clubs of the St. Louis Cardinals and Philadel phia Phillies. One highUght of Eion’s baseball season thus far was the performance of sopho more Eric Smith against a fine Pembroke State nine. Girls lose 3 win 1 by Gray Amick The Elon College women’s softball team opened the sea son by playing in teh A&T Invitational softball tourna ment. There the girls edged North Carolina A&T 12-11 but lost to Appalachian 10-3, UNC-G 4-0 and East Carolina 9-5. Errors were costly as the defending state champs’ rec ord went to 1-3. Leading Elon in the hitting department was Donna Schronce who had a .643 average for the tournament. Schronce had nine hits in 14 at bats. Ann Beeson got eight hits in 14 at bats for a .571 mark. Barby Adcock had a .428 average that included a double and three runs batted in. Dawn Inge had two RBI’s and one double in going .412. Lou Williamson also hit well by going six for 15 at the plate for a .400 average. Smith rebounded from his first college loss earUer this season to hurl a no-hitter against Pembroke. He upped his record to 2-1 with the 3-0 victory over Pembroke. Smith’s no-hitter earned him Carolinas Conference and District 26 player of the week honors. Prior to the Florida trip, Christian centerfielder Gene Drumright was the big slugger for Elon with a batting ave rage of .407. He had four doubles and one triple along with 11 singles. The Elon women’s tennis team sports a 1-3 record so far this season. The girls de feated Atlantic Christian 5-4 and lost to High Point 2-7, Pfeiffer 2-7 and Guilford 1-8. Dowell were the onlv victors for Elon agaist the Pfeiffer Falcons. Wall won by a score of 6-0, 6-1 and McDowell triumphed 6-4, 6-4. Against Guilford, Wall was the lone winners for the Fightin’ Christians. Wall, a freshman from Reidsville, is pacing the team this year with a 3-1 mark in singles com petition. Overedl the women netters record stjmds at 1-3. All of the matches played so far have been against conference opponents. The women are on the road today facing Pembroke State. Meanwhile, the men’s ten nis team lost their two match es before spring break, also. The netters lost a heartbreak- er (5-4) to Catawba and were beaten by Guilford. The men will play at home today against UNC-Greens- boro. The match will begin at 2:00. Christians finish 4th by Grayson Whitt The Elon Collepe golf team finished in fourth place in the 8th annual Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate Golf Tourna ment last Sunday. North Carolina, Duke and Old Do minion finished ahead of Elon, the defending cham pions. David Graham carded three 70 plus rounds to lead the Fightin’ Christians.
