“The third force”
Barbara Huffman, member
of the Elon College Chapter
of Alpha Chi, attended the
national convention of the
honorary fraternity in New
Orleans on April 5 through 7
as a voting delegate. Dr.
Robert G. Blake, sponsor of
the local chapter, attended the
meeting also.
Mrs. Huffman participated
in the convention program by
reading a paper which she
had written for a philosophy
class, entitled “On Becoming
a Person: the Theories of Dr.
Carl Rogers.”
She explained that the pa
per dealt with “the third
force or humanistic psycholo
gists including Marlow, May
and Peris who are con
cerned with the ‘whole per
son’ as a human being and his
realization as a self-actualized
individual. Both medicine and
psychology too often treat
symptoms, leaving the real
problems to fester and
grow.”
Mrs. Huffman said there
were ample chances for ques
tions and discussion after the
papers which “to my surprise
were lively and most inter
esting.” Some delegates
brought art, sculpture or pho
tography exhibits and musical
or dance programs.
Some 425 delegates attend
ed the convention, the largest
number ever. About 300 of
them were college students.
This was the first time Elon
has been represented by a
student delegate at a national
Alpha Chi convention.
Mrs. Huffman, a non-tra-
ditional student at Elon, hav

marriage and child-rearing,

Paul Gerni, well-known
professional pool shark, will
appear at Alumni Jordan
Gymnasium tonight at 7:30.
Gerni will play the winner
of the Elon pool tournament.
Although some may think it
unholy, Gerni, the son of a
Lutheran minister, was intro
duced to pool at the age of
six in the recreation room of
the church basement. By age
seven, he had won his first
tournament.
President of his senior class
in high school, Gerni attended
Purdue University where he
studied economics and mar
keting. He turned pro pool
player at age 21. According to
Gerni, “Interest (in pool) is
growing everywhere, especial
ly on college campuses. Indi
cators point toward record
sales every year and more and
more families turn, as a unit,
to the game” says Gerni.
Today, Gerni is one of the
world’s youngest touring pro
fessionals and is a certified
professional instructor. He is
