page 2 The Pendulum April 19,1979 Greeks to face exam The upcoming “Charter Review” of fraternities should sound an alarm throughout the Greek community at Elon College, for this action undoubtedly will affect the future role of Greek organizations on this campus. Several incidents prompted this administrative action. This year has seen less harmony and more outright competitive ness between some of the fraternities which has caused more than one heated confrontation. Competition is only acceptible when it is not taken to extremes; it can be destructive when it is pressed beyond reasonable boundaries. It now appears that the competitive spirit and the will to dominate is overshadowing the one basic principle all fraternities have in common: the search for brotherhood with our fellow man. A “fraternity” is a close-knit group of individuals who share common ideals and enjoy each other’s company. Of course, loyalty to a fraternity brother and the fraternity are important parts of the fraternity experience. However, when that loyalty is used as an excuse to subjugate another person or organization, the fraternal meaning is lost. A fraternity brother’s pride in his fraternity is his privilege. It is his right to expect the best from his fraternity and to do what he can to promote its objectives. It is only when the objectives get out of hand that problems arise. To be successful and respected, a fraternity must have internal harmony, motiv ation.and good relations with those who are not members of the organization. Elon’s fraternities have no problem fulfilling the first two requirements — it is the third one which is the stumbling block. Without assigning the blame to a person or organization for any injustices of the past, it is clear that the time has come for all fraternities to re-assess their priorities and engage in more productive and cooperative ventures. While the results of a charter review can necessitate drastic changes in an organization’s outward appearance, the real change must start internally by originating from the members themselves. Campus leadership positions are presently held primarily by Greeks. In addition, much of the after-hours social life radiates from fraternity and sorority houses. No one can deny that fraternities and sororities are an important part of Elon College — however, noting is permanent. It is possible that the Greek system as we know it today could fall by the wayside unless steps are taken by the Greeks, themselves, to prevent it. Guest editorial by J. Elon students are no ex ception. With prices rising on an average of one cent every two weeks, students are learning to find transportation other than by car. Mann’s Consumer Sales ex pect an increase in bicycle sales in the coming months due not only to weather but because of the increase in gas prices. “Sales are about normal now, but this summer there will be a lot more bicyclists than in the past,” a spokes man for the company said. People are also walking more than usual. In the future this could cure the college’s parking problem. Gas prices in Elon College seem to be the highest in all of Alamance County. Huff- ine’s Texaco has the highest in the area with prices in the mid to high eighties. Wil burn’s Exxon ranks second with prices in the high seven ties. In other places in the Elon community, prices are only slightly lower. He would not join a frat Dear Editor: I would like to voice my opinion on Greek Week. I am not familiar with any of the Greeks on Elon’s campus as I have just moved to this area in January, but 1 was ex tremely surprised to see some of the ways that so-called mature men can act. I am talking about one fraternity in particular that was so obnox ious and vulgar towards another fraternity that I can’t understand how anyone could care to be associated with that group. The victim fraternity acted in a manner that should be followed by the rest of the Greeks on campus. They were perfect gentlemen even though they caught abuse enough to make one sick. It was obvious to me which fraternity had more class even though it seems everyone was against them. If this college ever has another Greek Week, I hope that men can act like men and not shouting out obscenities like little boys. I hope the other fraternity is embarrassed for their ac tions. I don’t agree with the Greek system at Elon at all. Dave McNamara Instructor “unjustly dismissed^’ To the editor: This letter is to call atten tion to the injustice of a re cently announced faculty change in the Business De partment. Last month it was reported that John Patterson, professor of business law, would not be teaching at Elon after this spring. Instead, one of the school’s administrators would return to the classroom in his place. Why was the decision made to fire a completely compe tent and outstanding profes sor simi>Iy to allow someonein a higher position who wishes to teach to take over? Pro fessor Patterson is an excel lent teacher, turning a usually dull subject of business law into a rewarding subject through the real life exper iences in his law practice. While this replacement may be equally as-interesting, the school has degraded both men without reason. Since it is probably too late to cancel this action, I sin cerely hope that in the future such unjustified changes will not be made. Sincerely, Tony Lewis Elon should observe Easter Dear Editor, I am quite concerned that Elon College, a religious in stitution supported by the United Church of Christ, did not celebrate the highlight of the Christian faith, Easter, by giving students time off. It seems ironic that state schools like N.C. State and Carolina observe Easter by giving their students Good Friday and Easter Monday off, while Elon College fails to formally observe the holi day. Even though these two days are not national holidays I feel Elon should formally observe Easter and provide students with an appropriate vacation. Surely the Board of Trustees and Dr. Young will agree that in the future the school should observe Easter Joy Hamilton
