Jewett, Fleming defeat Wingate by Vici(i Blankenship Coming on strong at the end of the year, the wo men’s tennis teams won their last three matches of the season to end with a 5-3 record. Coach Karen Carden’s netters defeated the Campbell College 6-3. Single winners for that match were Keiren Wall, Kate Jewett, Julia Strange, and Mary Beth Hughes. The netters rallied strong against Pembroke University defeating them 7-2 and then won a close match against Wingate College with a score of 5-4. Janet Fleming and Kate Jewett paired together in doubles to win the deci ding match against Wingate. Single winners in the Win gate match were Janet Fle ming, Lori Clark, and Karen Wall. Janet Fleming came from behind 1-5 in her Christians lose 30-14 Elon hosts Catawba by Vicki Blankenship Elon football lost to Pres byterian College 30-14 in Clinton, S.C. The loss drops Elon’s overall record to 2-3 and 0-2 in the SAC-8. “Not scoring at the end of the first half hurt us,” said Coach Jerry Tolley. Elon drove to the Blue Hose six-inch line but came up short on a quarterback sneak by Mike Currin. Having no timeouts left, Elon could not stop the clock and time elapsed with me score Presbyterian 16, Elon 0. • The back-breaker came at the start of the second half when Presbyterian scored the first time they had the ball on a 59-yard scoring bomb to take a 23-0 lead. Elon did come back in the final half to score twice. Quaterback Mike Currin moved Elon’s offense well by passing for 256 yards and tailback Bobby Hedrick rushed for 106 years. “Though we lost, the team did some encouraging things,” said Tolley. “We can still have a good season by winnning the rest of our games and that’s our goal now,” added Tolley. This week Elon will host the Catawba Indians at Bur lington Stadium beginning at 2 p.m. singles match to take control and win 7-5, 6-2. The tennis match ended a successful year. Intramurak by Mike Robinson Several perfect seasons are in the making as flag foot ball enters week four. TKE, Sig Ep, The Blue Throbbers, Sigma Pi, KYN, and the NHG are all undefeated at approximately the halfway point. On the other end of the spectrum, TKE-B and the Sloan Raiders each picked up their first wins on the season this week. In women’s play, third Staley and ZTA remain un defeated and a major shoot out is expected when these two powerhouses meet. Se cond Carolina continues to be a contender, hanging in with a 2-1 total. Playing the best 3 out of 5, the match went all 5 games. Elon won first 15-10 and Pembroke came back to win the next two games 15-8 and 15-6. The Golden Girls kept their courage up and over- powered Pembroke to win the next two games I6-14 and 15-11 to win the match “We have played inconsis tently all year,” said Yar- borough. “This is the first time we came on at the end and played to our poten tial.” The Golden Girls hope to continue their playing im provement with conference and district play coming up. by Vicki Blankenship Eootball: Elon 14, Presby terian 30. The UNC- Charlotte golf team captured the first place standings.
