CampbeU by Keith Nelson In the Nov. 6 elections for the town of Elon College, three candidates are vying for the position of mayor, and eight are running for three places on the Board of Aldermen. The present mayor, T.L. Smith, is not seeking relection. Three aldermen, Ms. Sherley White, Dwight Wall, and D.D. At kinson, are not running. All candidates were asked by the Pendulum what they considered their best qualifi cations for the job and (2) what changes or goals they would work for if elected. Their answers are included 4>elow. Candidates for mayor Tim othy Parker, Thomas J. Krone, and M.E. “Marty” Campbell answered the que ries: TIM PARKER: QuaUfica- tions? I am a practicing Tim Parker attorney with legal training Ihai could be a help with decisions. I worked part-time while in college with the county manager and attorney in Alamance County, and so I know what problems small towns are facing. Changes or goals? I would like to see Elon College more self-sufficient in professional services. I favor non-pollu- tant industry, annexation of outlying areas, and town growth. I support improve ment in the town by commun ications and relations with sU people including students. There should be no special treatment of anyone. THOMAS J. KRONE: Qualifications? 1 have had experience as a purchasing manager and so 1 know how to set up a budget and to get the best for the money. Changes or goals? I want people to vote and to get Thomas J. Krone involved in local matters. I support annexation of areas north and west of Elon Collge and I am in favor of better sewage and water M.E. CAMPBELL: QuaU- cations? I am the only one with exDtrience running for mayor. I served 11 years on the board of aldermen, and the last four years I served as mayor pro tem and the last five years on the budget committee during which time there was no tax increase. Changes or goals? I am unsure of my plans since 1 don’t know what the present administration will do. I’ll wait for them to finish their present business. Candidates running for al dermen also answered the same questions. CAROL BLAKE: Qualifi cations? I began the first move for the efforts of the COLLEGE PHARMACY Open Monday thru Friday 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Satm*day 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Haggard Ave. Beside Winn-Dixie 10% off ON ALL MERCHANDISE Excluding Cigarettes Thm^day, Friday and Satm*day Greeting Cards Prescriptions School Supplies and others This is open to staff and students with College ID J £ Carol Blake beautification of the Main Street of the Town of Elon. The work began in 1974 while I was Beautification Chair man for the Garden Club. This special project wa« ex tended over two years. I arranged neighborhood dis cussions in homes all over town to bring forth ideas for improving our Town. The result of these meetings was revolutionary. Many organi zations began to show interest in upgrading Main Street. Money was very limited. I went to the Town Board and rcijuested that the Town budget money for the beauti fication efforts. Some money was granted to assist three garden clubs in our Town. Along came 1976 and the Bicentennial Commission was established by Mayor Smith. The mayor called me and asked me to serve because I had started the beautification efforts. It was a chance to j?et support and bring the down town area to a facelift. A dream fulfilled. If there are any questions regarding beau tification, just ask any Elon College Garden Club member and you will get your ear full. r shall go about the busi ness of aldermen as a Chris tian, and will draw on many talented citizens of our town for assistance. I shall be truthful and serve our Town for the people. I know how to manage money through niy work. I am active and hold leadership roles in the Community Church and Alamance Coun ty Chamber of Conmierce Women’s Division. Changes or goals? To continue aesthetic improve ment and municipal services without raising taxes, encou rage non-polluting businesses to strengthen our tax base, yet keep Elon small, to involve untapped talent in our town’s governance, listen and work with citizens from all areas, continue improve ment of Town-Gown rela tions, implement a much needed sign ordinance, survey the suggested annexation area to determine the percentage of people who wish to be a part of our town, and strive to have Elon College desig- David Joyce nated as an All .'vnerican Town. UAVID JOYCE: Qualifi cations? I believe that iny concern and desire to become involved are the primary qualifications. I am the youngest person running for the board. I do not represent a specific political group but feel free, to act according to the needs and concerns of hte citizens. My background is varied as I am an ordained minister and have been edu cated at a variety of in stitutions. I hope that people will believe that my inex perience in local government will be helpful as I hope to approach the position (if elected) in a fresh and candid manner. Changes and goals? I would like to see continues and improved efforts t'' bring the college and town residents together as mutually depen dent groups. I would also like to see the continuation of the beautification efforts with more involvement with the college. It would be nice to midntain the present tax level in this period of double digit inflation. This can be done only through expansion of the tax base through growth in the business and private population. It is imperative, however, that we insist on strict standards of enviro- mental quality and adherence to community philosophy and purpose. MARY ELLEN PRIESTLEY: Qualifications? A broad ed ucation and wide experience, ranging from years of news paper and public relations work with the National Red Cross, business experience with DuPont and the Pet Milk Co. to teaching college students, sei^ng on nume rous boards and committees and as an elected officer of local, state and national organizations. I served my country during World War II in the Southwest Pacific. In Elon College, vs here we have lived since 1%8, I have invested time, effort, and money in converting the old laundromat into an art gal lery which serves the towns- cont. on p. 6
