Page 6 The Pendulum November 1, 1979 Candidates vie for town aldermen and mayor people, schools, and brings interested people to Elon College. For me, this has been putting aesthetic theory into practice for a commu nity. My expertise in com munications should be use ful to the town because a democratic community, to be successful, must have an informed electorate. Changes or goals? I will work to improve the quality of life in Elon College by seeking long-term solutions to college-town friction and by encouraging active co operation in making this one of the best small towns in N.C. I favor long-term platming that will meet future needs of the whole commu nity; the creation of fraternity and sorority circles on the new campus area to remove these student groups from town residential areas; the forming of a community watch program throughout town and college to hdp •V. Wf. BARRY SIMMONS: Qual ifications? I am a concerned citizen with the necessary, ex pertise to deal with govem- r — «* mental units on the local, state, and national levels. I have an under-graduate de gree in political science with local government as my spec ialty. During the incorpora tion of the Elon College Fire Department, I acted as the chief chartering agent. I was also appointed a member to the bovd of directors of the Barry Simmoru fire department. I have con ducted several municipal gov ernment studies and evalua tions. I worked actively on several ordinances in Elon. Changes or goals? Con tinued good govenmient with sound management. I would like additional methods of obtaining more revenue to hold down taxes. New busi ness or annexation could be the answer. I would like cooperation and awareness between town and college. SID NORTON: Quallflca- dons? I have been in the real estate business for 16 years. Knowing the best land use for hte town of Elon College can help develop the town. Changes or goals? I am for continued town growth to a reasonable limit. I am against bringing in industry that would destroy the image of the town. I feel relations between the college and the town are the best they have been. I also feel they should continue this way. MARVIN GRANT: Qual ifications? I am a business man and a former mayor for eight years with two years as an alderman. For the last six [" »» - - -- "1 Brown & Company will be open Monday thru Saturday. Hours are 4:30 to 12 p.m. Mon ,-T ues.“ W ed. 4:30 - 8 pjn. SPECIAL 10% DISCOUNT years I have not been in local politics. I believe that busi ness is good experience for an alderman. Changes or goals? I plan no major changes. I think the town-college relations are good and with cooperation, they can improve still more. ED T. SIMMONS: Qual ifications? I have been a res ident since 1970, and I am running as the ‘Good Neigh bor Candidate’ because that’s what i want to be — a good neighbor and voice of the people. I have had 20 years experience in safety engineer ing with Western Electric. I owned and operated my own commercial photography busi ness for 14 years in Win- ston-Salem. I did road en gineering for the U.S. Forest Service. I’ve worked with and for people all my life. Changes or goals? I am against Elon College being annexed by Burlington. I am for the orderly growth of the town. Taxes should be kept to a minimum and at the same time the town must be well maintained and protected. 1 will be the good neighbor. CHARLES GANTOS: Quali fications? Mr. Cantos was unavailable for questioning. His campaign material does not mention qualifications. Changes or goals? I am against annexation of Elon College into Burlington. At present, under state and town law, three aldermen could vote Elon College into Burl ington. We must pursue an amendment to the present law to call for referendum be cause a decision of this magnitude should not be made by three people. I am cont. from p. 5 for widening the tax base bv expanding the town Umits rather than increasing pro perty taxes. I am for all groups being heard, but 1 am against an unfair dispropor tionate influence by any individual or group. (Taken from Mr. Cantos’ campaign publicity.) OMS self study cont. from p. 1 brary training and consulta tion; to gain experience in ihe consultation process ; to obtain an operation under standing of OMS self-study procedures and their applica tions; and to increase skills in facilitating groups engaged in Poor response well in advance of the pre registration period (Novem ber 12-16); in a broader sense, students should take the responsibility to (1) check mall boxes regularly, (2) read all notices, and (3) respond promptly to the notes. Imagine this: a helping problem-solving. The consultant candidates were selected on the basis of a written application, indivi dual interviews held region ally, and participation in a program orientation work shop. cont. from p. 3 hand is extended, but no one grasps the hand; no help is given. Or imagine this: a helping hand is extended, but it is grasped frantically by dozens of other hands so that the helping hand is over whelmed; very little help can be given.
