Page 2 The Pendulum February 14, 198q New bookstore needed In last week’s Pendolam, a student complained about the: need for a curb on the number of books required for certain classes. We think he made a valid point, but he didn’t go far enough with it. We suggest that some campus organization set up a student book exchange to handle some of the unneeded books, in particular paperbacks which the Campus Shop will often not buy back. The exchange might work like this: vhien the student no longer needs a book, he would turn it in to the exchange, which will then record his name and address. If and when the book is sold (perhaps at list price with a 10 percent discount for wear), the student will receive the proceeds. If the books aren’t sold, they will be returned. A system like this has not been tried on Elon’s campus, to our knowledge. We think it would be a valuable experience in management for the students involved, as well as a way to break the monopoly of the Campus Shop. Perhaps if this system is successful, we’ll be able to deal with the already existing exchanges in North Carolina. We might even get the Campus Shop to give us a better deal. Saber-rattling absurd Tuesday’s endorsement of the Moscow Olympics by the American Olympic Committee leaves President Carter with one final stroke, if he really wants to use it. He can recall the passports of our athletes. If he does this, it will be seen as a reprehensible last-ditch effort on his part to sabotage the Moscow games; what we would call a “cheap shot.” It would certainly cost him votes. On the one hand. Carter’s efforts are laudable in that he is condemning the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan at a time when they are proclaiming the games as a recognition of Soviet peaceful intentions. The Russian people may be easily lied to about the Afghan situation, but empty stadiums would be rather embarrassing and difficult to explain. The Soviet government is Hnding out, by the way, what we: learned in Vietnam; Determined insurgents can hold their own against troops superior in numbers, equipment and supply. The Russians have an added incentive in their own Moslem subjects who may see this situation as an object lesson. On the other hand, Carter is alienating a large portion of the population not only with his attempted boycott of the games, but with the proposed registration for the draft. Saber-rattling like this has never alarmed the Soviets, and in this case may provoke them to direct action against us. If they invade Iran and reach the Persian Gulf, we can kiss world peace goodbye. We hope that the Russians will withdraw their troops from Afghanistan in time to prevent more bloodshed and misery. Being from non-local territory, I was afraid of the new people I was soon to meet. The first faculty member I met on my arrival at Elon introduced me to several other faculty members. From that day on, I felt at ease with the entire faculty and staff. Students should realize the friendliness of this committee and make the best use of it. Although this campus does not require much conununi- cation improvement, my small suggestion could not Jennifer Leeds LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Inconsistent fines charged To The Editor, The lack of parking spaces on Elon campus is outrag eous. The Jordon Gym park ing lot is the available lot on campus for commuting stu dents. It is very discouraging to drive in at 7:45 every morning and unable to fmd a place to park. Oh, don’t get me wrong, there are always empty spots, but they are labelled “Staff.” In order to make classes on time, in desperation, I have parked in a so-called illegal spot. When I say I parked illegally, I mean I parked where there were no white lines. I did not obstruct an exit, not the exit of another car, nor cause unsafe situa tions. After class I returned to find a ticket. How are the fines de termined? One can only “guess.” On one occasion I received a ticket for $2, on another occasion I received a ticket for $15 for parking in the same spot. It is beyond me how I could get a $2 ticket Monday, the following Thursday get a $15 ticket after parking in the exact spot. I would like to suggest that an accurate count be taken of staff requirements, and each staff member be assigned a number and a place. I am of the opinion a considerable number of places are marked “staff’ would then be available to the commuter. Jeffrey Shields To draft or not to draft? To the Editor: President Carter has raised the question of reinstating the draft. He has done this due to the Soviet blitzkrieg in Af ghanistan. This proposal has already met some opposition from various groups, and the most fervent has come from college campuses around the country. Already,, students cont. on p. 6 Embarrassing^ painful falls Dear Editor: I’ve heard the old saying that when snow lies around for more than two days it’s waiting for some more. But what are the maintenance people waiting for? The ice in front of Long Student Center and the sidewalk on the hike to Harper Center is covered with ice. How did the ice disappear from the other sidewalks but decided to stay on these two? Is this because of a lack of personnel or because of a lack of shovels, or are there other reasons? I, not an ice skater, find it ahnost impossible to walk across the ice without slipping sliding and almost falling. But I’m one of the lucky ones. If it’s not too much trouble it would be a welcome change to see the disappearance of the ice from the two men tioned spots. I would like, once again, to be able to walk to the Student Center without the possibility of falling (I hate the embarrassment and also the pain.) Signed, the Dancing Bear alias Robin Adams Seniors are urged to vote for the senior student member of the Board of Tmstees before March 15. Vote on the yeDow card sent to each senior and mail to Prerident’s office. Housing Office no help To the Editor: In the fall of 1978 I was placed in Staley dorm. After a few weeks there I found I hated (among other things) the walk to main campus. I then decided to apply for the next available room on cam pus. I contacted Housing where I was told that my name would be placed on a waiting list, and I would be contacted as soon as a room became available. Much to my dismay, I never heard form the Hous ing office. I finally decided to check out the situation. I found that I was never on a a waiting list I I finally got my room on campus this semester, spring 1980, a year after I applied. However, the Housing Office wasn’t much help as I had to hunt for openings myself, talk to the occupants of rooms, and then still had to run all over campus collecting signaures in order to movel I suggest this system be revised!
