The Pendulum March 6, 1980 Twins, not triplets The Town of Elon College and Elon College have finally agreed on the building and location of new dormitories to house 144 students and a resident counselor. Unfortunately, the lollege held the promise of lawsuit over the town to get their consent. The new dorms will be very good-looking and are to have iiany eye-pleasing factors. They will be landscaped by (irofessionals. The administration says that this will help out considerably with Elon’s chronic housing shortage, and will provide a contrast to the colonial style buildings here. The iiiodular construction will save a lot of money as well as being strongly built. One problem may arise, however. The administration may fall to temptation and put three in a room again, and in the older dorms as well. This in an effort to maximize their student fees at the beginning of the fall semester. As we’ve said, the new dorms could be the answer to our housing problem, or at least a great help. The students currently forced to stay at Ramada could live on campus. We just hope that the new dorms aren’t made into more sardine cans. Turn down volume Noise around the campus has reached the level where it is most disturbing to professors and students alike. It’s not so bad now with the windows shut against the weather, but in a few weeks the temperature will be warmer and windows will be opening. When that happens, we can expect to be blasted by what seems to be 200+ decibel noise. Classes held in Powell, on the side facing Carolina and Smith, are subjected to constant interruption by blaring stereos, bellowing students, racing car motors, and other distractions. What can be done to the noisemakers? One rather Draconian solution would be to cut the power to the offending hall— ridiculous. That would punish the innocent with the guilty. A modification of that policy might be to cut off only the room in question. That’s almost as bad. The offender might be asked to take his or her stereo set home, or work hours might be imposed. What’s to be done? Another annoyance is the stereo located in the SUB office of the Student Center, which sounds off all night, every night, after the SUB staff have gone home. The speakers are located all over Long Student Center, and can’t be cut off selectively. They’re also played at high volume, higher than is necessary. Those outside broadcast high-volume music and commentary all over the area between the Student Center patio and the library. \N e’re certain that people in that part of town can hear it quite clearly. We hope that the noise problem around here can be turned down soon so everyone can get in some rest and studying. They have taken away several of our privileges and have forced us to drive off campus for social events which is inconvenient, more expensive and very dangerous to our lives. But it seems when the administration and faculty need help, they always turn to the Greek organizations. For instance, WTien the worship was held last fall, the Greeks were practically the only supporters. The Greeks were also strong supporters for the CROP walk. When the athletic teams needed support, who did they turn to— The Greeks!!! We want coverage Dear Editor, It seems that the letter my friends and I wrote, that appeared in the Feb. 21 issue, was misinterpreted. We never accused the Pen dulum of singling out mino rity students for criticism. The statement was reflecting the criticism made by faculty and staff of students. 1 realize that you have supported minority causes and 1 thank you for that support. Howe%er, I feel that there wouldn’t have been a mis understanding if the conclu sion :o the previous letter was read and printed, since a condusioQ sums up and reinforces the ideas presented in any written material. One of the mais ideas that we Pendulum staff meeting 4:00 Long iMudent Center intended to convey was that, in our opinion, there is too much town news in the Pendulum. 1 would also like to thank you for your sentiments toward the play. Miss Martha Hughes and Miss Lisa Foster deserve the credit, since it was they who chose the play for a project in Dr. Angyal’s class. But, as far as the prior coverage— you could have kept it! The article had so many typographical errors, (the spelling of “Enuf’ and the names of the student actresses for example) was written in such poor taste (referring to the title and content) that before Mrs. Council started class, I told the class to ignore it. I also fed that Mrs. Rich’s letter was a letter of suppon and appreciation more than roiew. So would you mind run ning a re%iew of the play, “For Colored Girb Who Considered Suidde When the Rainbow Is Enuf?” Doresc SfMMkUaft And presently the admini stration has asked the Greek organizations to work for the Elon College Phonathon. We are expected to spend several hours of our time to call alumni and parents to ask for donations for the college. Why do they turn to us? Because we are the strongest and most spirited organiza tions on this campus. It is not that the Greeks mind helping our school, but we just expect a little understanding and support from the admini stration and faculty. How about it Elon— Next time you ask us another favor, why don’t you do one for us in return? A Greek ZTA: Dear Sisters of Zeta Tau Alpha, The Zeta’s brought us peace, the ZTA’s gave us energy, the ZTA’s showed us life, but most of all the ZTA’s showed us love! The pledges of Zeta Tau Alpha wovild like to extend our great enthusiasm to the sisters of Zeta Tau Alpha. Each and every one of us want to thank you all for the opportunity which has been given to us. We only hope that you will be as pleased with our pledging this year as we are to be pledging. Also, we would like to extend our congratulations to the Sigma, Phi Mu, and •\lpha Sigma pledges, and to the future pledges of Ae fraternities. Let us all strive for the “Semester of the Greeks”!
