Page 2 The Pendulum April 17, 1980 Pre-registration mess Pre-registration for fall term has come and gone. The behavior of some of the students has come and gone also. After the last-minute rush to see advisers, students encountered lines that were extremely long. The patience of many students ran short at times. But for three mjile students to down four six-packs of beer and then shout obscenities down the stairway into the hall of the Powell Building is outrageous. The students did add a little variety to the otherwise boring afternoon, but their lack of consideration and their rudeness are far below the level of most of other Elon College students. Then there is the fellow who decided he did not want to wait in that line that went up three staircases. He simply “broke” in line, much to the dismay of his fellow-students, many of whom had waited for three hours or better. Even after someone spoke to him, he refused to go to the end of the line, evidently not caring what people thought. Peer pressure was definitely not the solution in this case, for this man just walked in the door and through the line. Why should a small college have such trouble registering students? Perhaps a more feasible way to pre-register would be by mail. This would eliminate the long lines and headaches for students and staff alike. Critical four weeks With the coming of spring, many changes and improvements are taking place in the community and on the campus. A ramp for the handicapped who use the library has been completed. The dogwoods near the library are nearing full bloom. In the town, the main business district is bright with azaleas and other flowers along the street. New lamp posts have been installed in front of the Elon College Community Church, a joint project of the town and the church. Over spring break, the maintenance staff was hard at work as is evident by the freshly mowed lawns and immaculate campus. With the warm weather and blooming flowers comes a chance to enjoy the thoughts of the summer vacation. But with just over three weeks of classes and then exam week, students cannot afford to slacken their study habits. Many students have taken up studying outside in the sun or near the lake or Harper Center. These next four weeks are critical to the academic well-being of Elon students. They should not let grades go down the drain because of the nice weather outside. The March 6 and March 13 issues of the Pendulum have been implying that drugs and smoidng pot are normal habits for Elon College stu dents. Drug abuse is common on most college campuses in the United States. There is no need to blemish all students or the newspaper with these radical characters. The Pendulum’s function is to search out and construct an impartial account of the ■ information that is of value to the student body. When the paper fails to acquire the true function of serving the student body, action must be taken. The Pendulum is not just for the exclusive use of this campus. Papers are constantly sent home to the students’ family, alumni and friends of the school to show Elon and her accomplishments. This paper produces a distorted outlook of the students and does not show the college in her proper light; therefore, this does not promote her reputation. The Pendulum staff should consider what they are print ing before implying some thing that could affect the way people think of our student body. This issue could be cleansed very easily by omitting the wrong doing of these cartoons. Edward Anthony Relnhelmer Let your voice be heard Dear Editor, This being the time when we elect our new student leaders, I suggest that all students exercise their right to vote. If students expect their leaders to work for them, they should show concern for those whom they select for these positions. The student government exists to govern the students and for this reason, students should elect competent leaders. If you show any concern for how your student govern ment is run, I hope you will exercise your right to vote. Get out and vote on Monday and Tuesday. A concerned student Location changed The location of the College Coffee, which has been held in the second floor of Mc- Ewen Dining Hall throughout the year, has been changed to the large lounge of the Long Student Center. The time, Thursday, at 9:30 a.m., will remain the same. This change becomes effective today. Greek fans complain Editor, The Pendulum, We were very disappointed in your coverage of Greek Weekend. This climax in the Greek year certainly deserved more than a small page four article and a few pictures. Surely the support the Greeks give the Pendulum and the school merits more adequate coverage than was given in the March 27 issue. In the future we hope you will keep in mind who is the real life blood of Elon— the Greeks. Kevin and Mike Robinson TKE Fraternity Editor’s note: Thanks for the transfusionl The Pendulum needs gen eral writers. Also needed is an advertising manager. This position carries a 15 percent commission on all money collected from ads. Interested persons should come be the Pendulum office, 205 Long Student Center, at 4 this afternoon or call Ext. 386.
