Page 2 The Pendulum April 24, 1980 Obscene caller caught The obscene phone caller who has plagued second floor Staley for over a year has now been caught. According to Chief Seagroves, the whole key to the culprit being caught was cooperation between the students and PSO Crowder. The constitution does not provide one with the right to talk trashy on the telephone. Women in Staley with private lines were receiving obscene phone calls also. At a called dorm meeting of second Staley, many women expressed concern for personal safety in the dorm. It was agre^ that the women would cooperate with the police and catch the caller. It’s good to know that in these days of student apathy that students can clan together when they wish. The students of Elon have a great capacity to make their voices heard. One flne example of students working together is the student security program at Harper Center at night. Men students guard the entrances of the women’s dorm and roam the dorms randomly. A good project for a fraternity might be to walk girls home from the library late at night. This would eliminate the fear of walking alone. Another idea might be for women with night classes to walk together back to the dorm or have a man walk them home. With the improving relations between the town and the college, it is good that the spirit of cooperation stiU exists. According to Chief Seagroves, the Public &fety Department is always willing to help and their door remains open. The whole ’ key to apprehension of Robert Day, who is to be tried in district court, was that the students and the offlcer worked togetW. This is a flne example of student and police cooperation and will, we hope, continue for a long time. Homeless students Even with the addition of the new modular dorms, there are about 75 people on the waiting list for campus housing. David Joyce, assistant dean of student affairs, says, “We have more people coming in than we can house.” Why should a college like Elon accept more students who need housing? What student would want toface the hassle of fmding a place to live, plus facing the challenges of a freshman? And what parents in their right mind would send their sons and daughters off to college not knowing where they’ll stay? Once again Elon is negotiating with an area motel to secure rooms for homeless students. Upperclassmen who have lost their rooms to incoming freshmen are also irritated. Six hundred rooms are reserved for freshmen and 800 rooms for upper classmen. There will be three to a room in Virginia, Sloan, Carolina and Smith dorms, but according to Dean Joyce, “by spring most of the triple rooms will be double.” However, the people who are three in a room will still have to pay the same amount for their roo-’is. We on the SUB have dealt with many different people in the past year and without a doubt, we have found that Mr. Sutherland can always be counted on to help us out. Thus far, this year he has provided us with pies for the pie eating contest, as well as the steak dinner we gave away for the first prize, he has also opened the grill on Thursday nights for the coffee houses at which they sell food at unbelievably low prices. The discos on second floor Mc- Ewen would not be possible without Mr. Southerland. The upcoming Spring Week end will include a picnic and a hamburger eating contest, thanks to Howard. The list goes on. Never have we seen one person give so much time and energy to his job as Mr. Southerland. We just wanted to say “Thanks” and tell him that his work does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. The SUB: David Schmidt, Blair Thompson, Marty Hardison, Buddy Hans-' barger, and others. Washers and dryers inadequate Editor: It has come to the attention of most students at Elon how impossible it is to get their clothes washed. It seems that a small college like Elon could supply adequate washers and diyers for the students. What few there are do not work 90 percent of the time. (A large emphasis is put on the few). At present, Carolina and Smith dorms have a grand total of ZERO washers and dryers. They must use the ones provided in Hook dorm along wth the students in Barney, Brannock, and Hook. Five or six washers hardly seem adequate for around 500 people!! In Sloan, where I reside, we have two washers and dryers. That sounds too good for over 150 students plus many others that come from far and near to wash their clothes. One point I left out— one washer eats'quarters for a living, and does not wash at all. The other works O.K. One dryer blows nothing but cold air, while the other dryer feeds on quarters with no work. Great for 150 (plus) people, Huh? I have no idea what could be done about the situation at Smith and Carolina. But in Sloan there are four sinks' in the laundry room that I have never seen used. Two or three of these sinks could easily be cut out and replaced with two or three washers. There is also plenty of floor space by the window for extra dryers. Another major solution would be for a maintenance man (or somebody with some brains) to check every week to see that they are operating correctly. I suppose it would be asking Elon too much to build a nice laundry room somewhere on campus! I have noticed in the past that this paper does get across some good points and that it is the only way for students to get anything they deserve. So please don’t fail us now! Very dirty clothes Poppycock! Editor, The Pendulum, In regard to the Robinson boys’ letter concerning the lack of coverage of Greek Week, I would like to say one thing— Poppycock! Four pages is more than enough coverage considering the paper is usually only 4 to 8 pages long. The Pendulum doesn’t have more responsi bility to Greeks than they do to the majority of the cam pus. The Robinson brothers should realize that not every thing in the world revolves around Greeks. If you want more coverage, print your own damn paper! Don’t pick on the Pendulum just because they didn’t devote the whole paper to you. By the way, not everyone at Elon has Greek blood either. We tend to have an allergic reaction to it.
